FOREWORD

As Seventh Day Adventist reformers, we are keenly aware of the short-

ness of time remaining before the return of our Lord Jesus Christ in the
clouds of heaven. In the religious world at large and among Adventists in
particular, various winds of doctrine are blowing-many of them centered
around the second coming of Christ. Indeed, our Saviour's advent is to be
the greatest event ever to occur in human history, and how essential it is that
we all consider carefully how this sobering reality should be affecting our
lives both individually and as a church.
We are living in a solemn hour-one in which mere professions of godli-
ness, signs and wonders, outward ceremonies, theological prowess and time-
setting tables cannot save our souls. Rather, there is one basic truth soon to be
realized worldwide: that only the pure in heart shall see God (Matthew 5:8).
Purity of heart, holiness of mind, are the prerequisites for translation to
heaven. These qualities are not options to be perhaps admired yet lightly
regarded, but instead are distinctive characteristics absolutely necessary for
admission to the heavenly courts. Neither faith in Christ alone nor mere hu-
man effort and good works can ensure our salvation, but only the saving
faith of Jesus-that "faith which worketh by love" (Galatians 5:6).
"All true reformation begins with soul-cleansing. It is by the washing of
regeneration and the renewing of the mind through the power of the Holy
Spirit, that a change is wrought in the life. By beholding Christ we become
changed." -Sons and Daughters of God, p. 105.
Many Sabbath school quarterlies have dealt with current doctrinal issues,
theological questions, Bible experiences, and last-day events-and these, of
course, are all excellent topics in their sphere. But the real requirement to be
among the 144,000 sealed ones-the real gist of the matter of salvation in this
antitypical Day of Atonement-involves a question which we all must ask
ourselves personally: Does my character reflect the image of Jesus fully?
The process by which our thoughts and feelings are gradually transformed
from sin and degradation into the likeness of Christ is a miraculous demon-
stration to the universe of the power of a beneficent Creator. It reveals the
abundant fountains of His omnipotent mercy in redeeming the unworthy ob-
jects of His supreme love to be restored to the image of His spotless purity.
Dear brethren, let us consider the universal issues at stake in the great
controversy, and cooperate with our Lord in this grand work of redemption
by dying to self and living for Christ. As we go through these Sabbath Bible
Lessons day by day, let it be our earnest purpose to abide as co-laborers with
God in His merciful plan to save us from destruction-and from our own selves
-by purifying our hearts in obedience to the truth.

Special Project Offering
for the church in Toronto, Canada
Canada-the second largest country in 'the world, a land of beauty
with its many great lakes, vast forests, never-ending prairies, the
Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, and much more-has been
the land of hope for many immigrants. Nearly half of all refugees
who seek permanent residency come from Asia; the other half im-
migrate from Europe (almost 25%) and from other parts of the
world. Today the population stands at just over 27 million.
Ottawa is the capital of the nation and the official languages are
English and French. Toronto is the capital of the Ontario province
and is the largest metropolitan area.
Religion plays an important role in the lives of a vast majority of
the people (92.7%). There is no official religion. Those who are loyal
adherents and who actually practice the religion of their choice are
affiliated to: Roman Catholicism 46.5%; Protestant 41.2%; Eastern
Orthodox 1.2%; Jewish 1.2%; Muslim, Hindus, Sikhs, non-religious
and others 9.6%.
Canada is well known to many of our brethren around the world.
In 1983 we had the privilege of hosting the SDA Reform Movement
General Conference Session on the site of the Puslinch church. The
brethren here had an opportunity to meet many representatives
from different parts of the world.
For several years the East Canadian Field has been very gen-
erous in supporting financially the calls of various unions, con-
ferences and missions. Now we trust that this loyal support will be
reciprocated.
For the past few years the brethren of this Field have been ac-
tive in building a new church in the city of Toronto. This project was
completed in the final months of 1992, but financially it still needs
assistance.
Since we are a large Field with only a few members, we appeal
to our brethren all over the world for a special offering. Your
generous contribution will not be overlooked by the Giver of all good
gifts (James 1:17,2 Corinthians 9:7). Through your kind assistance
and the Lord's grace, the Toronto church will be ready for dedica-
tion to God's glory.

A REFORMATION AMONG GOD'S PEOPLE

"We need a thorough reformation in all our churches. The converting power
of God must come into the church. Seek the Lord most earnestly, put away
your sins, and tarry in Jerusalem till ye be endowed with power from on
high." - Testimonies to Ministers, p. 443.

KEY TEXT: "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted
out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the
Lord" (Acts 3:19).

THE SPIRITUAL CONDITION OF LAODICEA June 27

1. How does the True Witness describe the condition of Laodicea? Revelation
3:15.

"It is not enough to merely profess to believe the truth. All the soldiers of the
cross of Christ virtually obligate themselves to enter the crusade against the adver-
sary of souls, to condemn wrong and sustain righteousness. But the message of the
True Witness reveals the fact that a terrible deception is upon our people, which
makes it necessary to come to them with warnings,. to break their spiritual slumber,
and arouse them to decided action."- Testimonies. vol. 3, p. 254.

2. Why is it so difficult for those who feel secure in their attainments to receive
the Laodicean message? Revelation 3: 17.

"The message of the True Witness finds the people of God in a sad deception,
yet honest in that deception. They know not that their condition is deplorable in the
sight of God. While those addressed are flattering themselves that they are in an exalted
spiritual condition, the message of the True Witness breaks their security by the star-
tling denunciation of their true condition of spiritual blindness, poverty, and wretched-
ness."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 253.
"I have been shown that the greatest reason why the people of God are now found
in this state of spiritual blindness is that they will not receive correction."-Ibid.,
p.255.

TWO POSSIBILITIES/TWO CLASSES OF BELIEVERS June 28

3. What happens to those who are content to remain in the condition of Laodi-
cea? Revelation 3:16.

"Christ cannot take up the names of those who are satisfied in their own self-
sufficiency. He cannot importune in behalf of a people who feel no need of His help,
who claim to know and possess everything."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White
Comments], vol. 7, p. 964.
"If the church pursue a course similar to that of the world, they will share the
same fate. Nay, rather, as they have received greater light, their punishment will be
greater than that of the impenitent."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 100.
4. What counsel does Christ give to those who want to be healed of the Laodi-
cean condition? Revelation 3:18.

"The only hope for the Laodiceans is a clear view of their standing before God, a
knowledge of the nature of their disease."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 87.
"I saw that this call to the Laodicean church will affect souls. A becoming zeal is
called for by God on our part.. We must repent, throwaway our whole feelings, feel our
destitution, buy gold that we may be rich, eyesalve that we may see, white raiment that
we may be clothed."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. Whte Comments], vol. 7, p. 966.
"The gold that Jesus would have us buy of Him is gold tried in the fire; it is the
gold of faith and love, that has no defiling substance mingled with it. The white rai-
ment is the righteousness of Christ, the wedding garment which Christ alone can
give. The eyesalve is the true spiritual discernment that is so wanting among us, for
spiritual things must be spiritually discerned."-Ibid., p. 965.
D Tuesday
REPENTANCE AND CONVERSION June 29

5. How do we understand the call for revival and reformation? Acts 3:19.

"A revival and a reformation must take place under the ministration of the Holy
Spirit. Revival and reformation are two different things. Revival signifies a renewal of
spiritual life, a quickening of the powers of mind and heart, a resurrection from the
spiritual death. Reformation signifies a reorganization, a change in ideas and theories,
habits and practices. Reformation will not bring forth the good fruit of righteousness
unless it is connected with the revival of the Spirit. Revival and reformation are to do
their appointed work, and in doing this work they must blend." -Christian Service, p. 42.
6. What does genuine repentance imply? Revelation 3:19; Ezekiel 33:15, 16.

"N 0 repentance is genuine that does not work reformation. The righteousness of
Christ is not a cloak to cover unconfessed and unforsaken sin; it is a principle of life that
transforms the character and controls the conduct. Holiness is wholeness for God; it is the
entire surrender of heart and life to the indwelling of the principles of heaven.
"The Christian in his business life is to represent to the world the manner in
which our Lord would conduct business enterprises. In every transaction he is to
make it manifest that God is his teacher. 'Holiness unto the Lord' is to be written
upon daybooks and ledgers, on deeds, receipts, and bills of exchange."- The Desire of
Ages, pp. 555, 556.

THE PILLARS OF OUR FAITH June 30

7. How far does the Laodicean condition affect the pillars of the Advent faith?
Psalm 11:3.

"A company was presented before me under the name of Seventh-day Advent-
ists, who were advising that the banner or sign which makes us a distinctive people
should not be held out so strikingly; for they claimed it was not the best policy in se-
curing success to our institutions." -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 385.
"After the truth has been proclaimed as a witness to all nations, every con-
ceivable power of evil will be set in operation, and minds will be confused by many
voices crying, 'Lo, here is Christ; 10, He is there. This is the truth, I have the message
from God, He has sent me with great light.' Then there will be a removing of the land-
marks, and an attempt to tear down the pillars of our faith." - The SDA Bible Commen-
tary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 985.

8. What is the consequence of the acceptance of false teachings by the Laodi-

cean church? 1 Corinthians 11:19; Romans 16:17.

"God will arouse His people; if other means fail, heresies will come in among them,
which will sift them, separating the chaff from the wheat."-Gospel Workers, p. 299.
"When the shaking comes, by the introduction of false theories, ... surface
readers [upon whom the word of God has made little impression], anchored nowhere,
are like shifting sand. They slide into any position to suit the tenor of their feelings of
bitterness."- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 112.

RESTORING THE OLD PATHS July 1

9. What does a faithful remnant do when the church is in apostasy? Jude 3

(last part).

"I saw a company who stood well guarded and firm, giving no countenance to
those who would unsettle the established faith of the body."-Earry Writings, p. 258.

10. What is our work today in view of the apostasy in Laodicea? Jeremiah 6:16
(last part); Isaiah 58: I, 12.

"Here [Isaiah 58:8-14] are given the characteristics of those who shall be reformers,
who will bear the banner of the third angel's message, those who avow themselves God's
commandment-keeping people, and who honor God, and are earnestly engaged, in the
sight of all the universe, in building up the old waste places. Who is it that calls them, The
repairers of the breach, The restorers of paths to dwell in? It is God. Their names are reg-
istered in heaven as reformers, restorers, as raising the foundations of many generations."
-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1151.
"I have been hoping that there would be a thorough reformation, and that the
principles for which we fought in the early days, and which were brought out in the
power of the Holy Spirit, would be maintained."-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 206.

CONSECRATION

"The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought. The
yielding of self, surrendering all to the will of God, requires a struggle; but
the soul must submit to God before it can be renewed in holiness." -Steps to
Christ, p. 43.

KEY TEXT: "So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he
hath, he cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:33).

OUR ORIGINAL CONDITION July 4

1. How does the Bible describe our original condition before our conversion?
Isaiah 1:5,6; Ephesians 2:1; 2 Timothy 2:26.

2. How far is a man, without Christ, able to go in his effort to change his char-
acter? Jeremiah 13:23; John 15:5 (last part).

"There are those who profess to serve God, while they rely upon their own ef-
forts to obey His law, to form a right character, and secure salvation. Their hearts are
not moved by any deep sense of the love of Christ, but they seek to perform the duties
of the Christian life as that which God requires of them in order to gain heaven. Such
religion is worth nothing." -Steps to Christ, p. 44.
o Monday
ALL IDOLS MUST BE GIVEN UP July 5

3. What must a person give up in order to become a disciple of Christ? Luke

14:33.

"In giving ourselves to God, we must necessarily give up all that would separate
us from Him.... Whatever shall draw away the heart from God must be given up.
Mammon is the idol of many. The love of money, the desire for wealth, is the golden
chain that binds them to Satan. Reputation and worldly honor are worshiped by
another class. The life of selfish ease and freedom from responsibility is the idol of
others. But these slavish bands must be broken. We cannot be half the Lord's and
half the world's. We are not God's children unless we are such entirely."-Steps to
Christ, p. 44.

4. How did Christ illustrate the need to cut off every darling indulgence? Mat-
thew 5:29.

-8-

j
"There must be a revival of the strait testimony. The path to heaven is no
smoother now than in the days of our Saviour. All our sins must be put away. Every
darling indulgence that hinders our religious life must be cut off. The right eye or the
right hand must be sacrificed if it cause us to offend. Are we willing to renounce our
own wisdom and to receive the kingdom of heaven as a little child? Are we willing to
part with self-righteousness? Are we willing to give up our chosen worldly associates?
Are we willing to sacrifice the approbation of men? The prize of eternal life is of in-
finite value. Will we put forth efforts and make sacrifices proportionate to the worth
of the object to be attained?"- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 222.

o Tuesday
THE CHOICE IS OURS July 6

5. How do we make the surrender of ourselves to Christ? Deuteronomy 30:19;

Joshua 24:15 (first part); Revelation 3:20.

"You desire to give yourself to Him, but you are weak in moral power, in slavery
to doubt, and controlled by the habits of your life of sin. Your promises and resolu-
tions are like ropes of sand. You cannot control your thoughts, your impulses, your af-
fections. The knowledge of your broken promises and forfeited pledges weakens
your confidence in your own sincerity, and causes you to feel that God cannot accept
you; but you need not despair. What you need to understand is the true force of the
will. This is the governing power in the nature of man, the power of decision, or of
choice. Everything depends on the right action of the will. The power of choice God
has given to men; it is theirs to exercise. You cannot change your heart, you cannot of
yourself give to God its affections; but you can choose to serve Him. You can give Him
your will; He will then work in you to will and to do according to His good pleasure.
Thus your whole nature will be brought under the control of the Spirit of Christ; your
affections will be centered upon Him, your thoughts will be in harmony with Him."-
Steps to Christ, p. 47. [Author's emphasis.]

6. What is the evidence that we have allowed Christ to take possession of our
hearts? 2 Corinthians 5:14.

"When Christ dwells in the heart, the soul will be so filled with His love, with the
joy of communion with Him, that it will cleave to Him; and in the contemplation of
Him, self will be forgotten. Love to Christ will be the spring of action. Those who feel
the constraining love of God, do not ask how little may be given to meet the re-
quirements of God; they do not ask for the lowest standard, but aim at perfect confor-
mity to the will of their Redeemer. With earnest desire they yield all and manifest an
interest proportionate to the value of the object which they seek. A profession of
Christ without this deep-love is mere talk, dry formality, and heavy drudgery. "-Steps
to Christ, pp. 44, 45.

o Wednesday
DANGER IN DELAY July?

7. How dangerous is it to resist the impression made by the Holy Spirit or to

postpone our decision to act according to our enlightened conscience? He-
brews 3:7, 8.

"Desires for goodness and holiness are right as far as they go; but if you stop
here, they will avail nothing. Many will be lost while hoping and desiring to be Chris-

-9-
tians. They do not come to the point of yielding the will to God. They do not now
choose to be Christians."-Steps to Christ, pp. 47, 48. [Author's emphasis.]

8. In connection with what duty are we in danger of grieving the Holy Spirit
through our neglect or delay? 2 Timothy 4:2-5.

"Let your hearts be drawn out in love for perishing souls. Obey the impulse
given by High Heaven. Grieve not the Holy Spirit by delay. Resist not God's methods
of recovering souls from the thralldom of sin. To every man, according to his several
ability, is given his work. Do your best, and God will accept your efforts."-Testimonies,
vol. 8, p. 56.
D Thursday
SALVATION: A JOINT OPERATION JulyS

9. What lesson of Christ shows that man must strive if he wants to be saved?
Luke 13:23, 24. What will happen to those who do not know what it means
to struggle against the powers of darkness? Luke 13:25-27.

"Man is allotted a part in this great struggle for everlasting life; he must respond
to the working of the Holy Spirit. It will require a struggle to break through the
powers of darkness, and the Spirit works in him to accomplish this. But man is no
passive being, to be saved in indolence. He is called upon to strain every muscle and
exercise every faculty in the struggle for immortality; yet it is God that supplies the
efficiency. No human being can be saved in indolence."-Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 65.

10. How does Paul show that salvation is a joint operation? Philippians 2:12, 13.

"The work of gaining salvation is one of copartnership, a joint operation. There is to

be cooperation between God and the repentant sinner." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 482.
"Will man take hold of divine power, and with determination and perseverance
resist Satan, as Christ has given him example in His conflict with the foe in the
wilderness of temptation? God cannot save man against his will from the power of
Satan's artifices. Man must work with his human power, aided by the divine power of
Christ, to resist and to conquer at any cost to himself. In short, man must overcome as
Christ overcame. And then, through the victory that it is his privilege to gain by the
all-powerful name of Jesus, he may become an heir of God and joint heir with Jesus
Christ. This could not be the case if Christ alone did all the overcoming. Man must do
his part; he must be victor on his own account, through the strength and grace that
Christ gives him. Man must be a coworker with Christ in the labor of overcoming, and
then he will be partaker with Christ of His glory." - Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 32, 33.

OBEDIENCE

"What God promises He is able at any time to perform, and the work which
He gives His people to do He is able to accomplish by them. If they will live
according to every word He has spoken, every good word and promise will
be fulfilled unto them." - Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 148.

KEY TEXT: "Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the
kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in
heaven" (Matthew 7:21).

THE WORK OF CHRIST D Sunday

IN BEHALF OF SINNERS July 11

1. What work does Christ want to do in behalf of sinners in order to free them
from the dominion of Satan? 1 John 3:8; Matthew 1:21; Hebrews 2:14,15.

"Jesus died, not to save man in his sins, but/rom his sins. Man is to leave the er-
ror of his ways, to follow the example of Christ, to take up his cross and follow Him,
denying self, and obeying God at any cost."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 251. [Author's italics.]

2. What does Christ say to those who want to be saved? John 5:14 (last part);
8: 11 (last part).

"All who are not decided followers of Christ are servants of Satan. In the unre-
generate heart there is love of sin and a disposition to cherish and excuse it. In the
renewed heart there is hatred of sin and determined resistance against it."- The Great
Controversy, p. 508.

D Monday
"GO, AND SIN NO MORE" July 12

3. What is sin, and whereby can it be identified? 1 John 3:4; Romans 3:20 (last
part); 7:7.

4. In the light of the definition of sin, what is the meaning of the command,
"Go, and sin no more?" Romans 2:17,21-23,27; James 2:10-12:

"Do not put off the work of forsaking your sins and seeking purity of heart
through Jesus. Here is where thousands upon thousands have erred to their eternal

-11-
loss. I will not here dwell upon the shortness and uncertainty of life; but there is a ter-
rible danger-a danger not sufficiently understood-in delaying to yield to the plead-
ing voice of God's Holy Spirit, in choosing to live in sin; for such this delay really is.
Sin, however small it may be esteemed, can be indulged in only at the peril of infinite
loss. What we do not overcome, will overcome us and work out our destruction."-
Steps to Christ, pp. 32, 33.

D Tuesday
NO ACCEPTANCE FOR TRANSGRESSORS July 13

5. As far as the law is concerned, what condition is decisive before God? Luke
10:25-28; 1 Corinthians 7:19; Romans 2:13.

"Christ does not lessen the claims of the law. In unmistakable language He pre-
sents obedience to it as the condition of etemallife-the same condition that was required
of Adam before his fall. The Lord expects no less of the soul now than He expected of
man in Paradise, perfect obedience, unblemished righteousness. The requirement under
the covenant of grace is just as broad as the requirement made in Eden-harmony
with God's law, which is holy, just, and good."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 391.

6. What evidence shows that unrepentant and unregenerate transgressors will

be disqualified for the kingdom of heaven? Matthew 5:19, 20; 7:19-23; Ro-
mans 8:7, 8.

"Sinners will never enter the abode of bliss. The commandment breaker, and all
who unite with him in teaching that it makes no difference whether men break or ob-
serve the divine law, will by the universe of heaven be called least among the human
agencies. For nQt only have they been disloyal themselves, but they have taught
others to break the law of God. Christ pronounces judgment upon those who claim to
have a knowledge of the law, but who, by precept and example, lead souls into confu-
sion and darkness."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1085.

D Wednesday
AN OBEDIENT PEOPLE July 14

7. What identifying mark will always be seen with the true people of God? Ex-
odus 19:5; Jeremiah 11:1-5.

"John declared to the Jews that their standing before God was to be decided by
their character and life. Profession was worthless. If their life and character were not
in harmony with God's law, they were not His people."-The Desire of Ages, p. 107.

8. Today, how can the true people of God be distinguished from the professed
Christian world? 1 John 2:3-6; Isaiah 8:20.

"Teachers of falsehood will arise to draw you away from the narrow path and the
strait gate."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 145.
"Let none cherish the idea that specialprovidences or miraculous manifestations
are to be the proof of the genuineness of their work or of the ideas they advocate.
When persons will speak lightly of the word of God, and set their impressions, feel-
ings, and exercises above the divine standard, we may know that they have no light in
them."-Ibid., p. 146.

D Thursday
EARMARKS OF GOD'S LAST REMNANT July 15

9. What is the description of the remnant people of God who will be victorious
in the last great conflict? Revelation 12:17; 14:12.

"There are only two parties upon this earth-those who stand under the blood-
stained banner of Jesus Christ and those who stand under the black banner of rebel-
lion. In the twelfth chapter of Revelation is represented the great conflict between the
obedient and the disobedient."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol.
7, p. 974.

10. What victories will be implied in the obedience of God's faithful children?
Revelation 15:2.

"If we are true servants of God, there should be no question in our minds as to
whether we will obey His commandments or consult our own temporal interests. If
the believers in the truth are not sustained by their faith in these comparatively
peaceful days, what will uphold them when the grand test comes and the decree goes
forth against all those who will not worship the image of the beast and receive his
mark in their foreheads or in their hands? This solemn period is not far off."-Testi-
monies, vol. 4, p. 251.

PRAYER: THE KEY TO HEAVEN'S STOREHOUSE July 18

1. What is written about the power of prayer? Matthew 21:22; James 5:16
(last part). How is prayer defined?

"Prayer is the opening of the heart to God as to a friend." -Steps to Christ, p. 93.
"Prayer is the key in the hand of faith to unlock heaven's storehouse."-Ibid.,
p.94.

2. Why is it essential for God's people to be diligent and persevering in prayer?

1 Peter 5:8; Luke 21:36.

"Without unceasing prayer and diligent watching we are in danger of growing

careless and of deviating from the right path. The adversary seeks continually to
obstruct the way to the mercy seat, that we may not by earnest supplication and faith
obtain grace and power to resist temptation."-Steps to Christ, p. 95.

REGARDING PRAYER July 19

3. What example in prayer did the Saviour bring us? Mark 1:35; Luke 22:44;
Hebrews 5:7. .

"In a life wholly devoted to the good of others, the Saviour found it necessary to
withdraw from the thoroughfares of travel and from the throng that followed Him day
after day. He must turn aside from a life of ceaseless activity and contact with human

needs, to seek retirement and unbroken communion with His Father. As one with us,
a sharer in our needs and weaknesses, He was wholly dependent upon God, and in the
secret place of prayer He sought divine strength, that He might go forth braced for
duty and trial."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 362, 363.

4. How did the Lord teach the disciples to pray? Matthew 6:7-13. What four
points should be borne in mind when prayer is offered?

"Weare taught to come to God with our tribute of thanksgiving, to make known
our wants, to confess our sins, and to claim His mercy in accordance with His prom-
ise."-Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 103.

VICTORIOUS PRAYER July 20

5. Where and how do the people of God gain their greatest victories? Matthew
6:6: Luke 18:7, 8.

"It is now that we are to learn this lesson [as Jacob did] of prevailing prayer, of
unyielding faith. The greatest victories to the church of Christ or to the individual
Christian are not those that are gained by talent or education, by wealth or the favor
of men. They are those victories that are gained in the audience chamber with God,
when earnest, agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of power."-Patriarchs

TO BE EXPECTED July 21

7. How do we know, from the words of Christ, that prayers are not always
answered immediately? Luke 18:7. What is one of the reasons for delay in
receiving answers to prayers?

"The Saviour longs to give us a greater blessing than we ask; and He delays the
answer to our request that He may show us the evil of our own hearts, and our deep
need of His grace. He desires us to renounce the selfishness that leads us to seek
Him. Confessing our helplessness and bitter need, we are to trust ourselves wholly to
His love."-The Desire of Ages, p. 200.

8. What lesson should we learn from Christ's prayer in Luke 22:42?

"When we do not receive the very things we asked for, at the time we ask, we
are still to believe that the Lord hears and that He will answer our prayers. Weare so
erring and shortsighted that we sometimes ask for things that would not be a blessing
to us, and our heavenly Father in love answers our prayers by giving us that which
will be for our highest good-that which we ourselves would desire if with vision
divinely enlightened we could see all things as they really are. When our prayers
seem not to be answered, we are to cling to the promise; for the time of answering will
surely come, and we shall receive the blessing we need most." -Steps to Christ, p. 96.

9. What prevents the Lord from hearing some prayers? Psalm 66:18; Prov-
erbs 28:9; James 1:6, 7.

10. What condition must be met before God can answer prayer? James 1:6 (first
part); 1 John 3:22; 5:14.

"When we come to Him in faith, every petition enters the heart of God. When we
have asked for His blessing, we should believe that we receive it, and thank Him that
we have received it. Then we are to go about our duties, assured that the blessing will
be realized when we need it most. When we have learned to do this, we shall know

HELPING THE ERRING ONES July 25

1. How are we to act when we see that a fellow member has erred? Leviticus
19:17; Matthew 18:15.

"Do not suffer sin upon your brother; but do not expose him, and thus increase
the difficulty, making the reproof seem like a revenge. Correct him in the way out-
lined in the word of God.
"Do not suffer resentment to ripen into malice. Do not allow the wound to fester
and break out in poisoned words, which taint the minds of those who hear. Do not
allow bitter thoughts to continue to fill your mind and his. Go to your brother, and in
humility and sincerity talk with him about the matter.
"Whatever the character of the offense, this does not change the plan that God
has made for the settlement of misunderstandings and personal injuries. Speaking alone
and in the spirit of Christ to the one who is in fault will often remove the difficulty. Go to
the erring one, with a heart filled with Christ's love and sympathy, and seek to adjust
the matter. Reason with him calmly and quietly."-Testimonies, vol. 7, pp. 260, 261.
2. What spiritual ability do we need, in many cases, before we can be sure that
a brother or sister is in error? Matthew 6:22; Revelation 3:18 (last part).

"The eyesalve is that wisdom and grace which enables us to discern between the
evil and the good, and to detect sin under any guise. God has given His church eyes
which He requires them to anoint with wisdom, that they may see clearly; but many
would put out the eyes of the church if they could; for they would not have their deeds
come to the light, lest they should be reproved. The divine eyesalve will impart clear-

MISTAKES TO BE AVOIDED July 26

3. What mistake is often made because Matthew 18:15 is not followed? Prov-
erbs 20:19. What rule was given to discourage evil surmisings and back-
biting? Psalm 15:3.

-17 -
"Men have no right to surmise evil in regard to their fellowmen. Church mem-
bers have no right to follow their own impulses and inclinations in dealing with fellow
members who have erred. They should not even express their prejudices regarding
the erring, for thus they place in other minds the leaven of evil. Reports unfavorable
to a brother or sister in the church are communicated from one to another of the
church members. Mistakes are made and injustice is done because of an unwilling-
ness on the part of some one to follow the directions given by the Lord Jesus."- Testi-
monies, vol. 7, p. 260.

4. What may happen as a result of hasty and premature conclusions in dealing

with supposed or real error? Proverbs 25:8, 9.

"Do not tell others of the wrong. One person is told, then another, and still
another; and continually the report grows, and the evil increases, till the whole church
is made to suffer."- Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 260.

"Those who condemn or criticize others, proclaim themselves guilty, for they do
the same things. In condemning others, they are passing sentence upon themselves,
and God declares that this sentence is just."- Thoughts From the Mount ofBlessing, p. 124.

6. What instruction should we heed before we can correct others? Matthew

7:3-5.

"First set your own heart in order, and reform your own character; obtain a con-
nection with God, and gain a daily Christian experience; then you may bear a burden
for souls who are out of Christ."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 465.

RIGHT AND WRONG WAYS July 28

7. What rule should we bear in mind when we see that a brother or sister needs
advice? James 3:2; Proverbs 15:1.

"No one was ever reclaimed by reproach; but many have thus been repelled and ,;
have been led to steel their hearts against conviction. A tender spirit, a gentle, win-
ning deportment, may save the erring and hide a multitude of sins."-The Ministry of
Healing, p. 166.

8. How tactful should we be when we talk to others about their faults? Gala-
tians 6:1; James 5:20.

"Let no angry words escape your lips. Speak in a way that will appeal to [the err-
ing one's] better judgment. ...
"Take to your brother the remedy that will cure the disease of disaffection. Do
your part to help him. For the sake of the peace and unity of the church, feel it a privi-
lege as well as a duty to do this. If he will hear you, you have gained him as a friend.

-18 -
"All heaven is interested in the interview between the one who has been injured
and the one who is in error. As the erring one accepts the reproof offered in the love of
Christ, and acknowledges his wrong, asking forgiveness from God and from his
brother, the sunshine of heaven fills his heart."-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 261.

CONFESSING FAULTS AND SINS July 29

9. When confessing our faults and sins, what clear distinctions should we bear
in mind, and to whom should we confess? Psalm 32:5; James 5: 16 (first part).

"Confess your sins to God, who only can forgive them, and your faults to one
another. If you have given offense to your friend or neighbor you are to acknowledge
your wrong, and it is his duty freely to forgive you. Then you are to seek the forgive-
ness of God because the brother whom you wounded is the property of God, and in in-
juring him you sinned against his Creator and Redeemer. The case is not brought be-
fore the priest at all, but before the only true mediator, our great High Priest, who
'was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin,' and who is 'touched with
the feeling of our infirmities' and is able to cleanse from every stain of iniquity." - Tes-
timonies, vol. 5, p. 639.
"True confession is always of a specific character, and acknowledges particular
sins. They may be of such a nature as only to be brought before God, they may be
wrongs that should be confessed before individuals who have suffered injury through
them, or they may be of a general kind that should be made known in the congrega-
tion of the people. But all confession should be definite and to the point, acknowledg-
ing the very sins of which you are guilty."-Ibid.

10. What promise belongs to those who confess their sins? Proverbs 28:13; 1
John 1:9.

"It is no degradation for man to bow down before his Maker and confess his sins,
and plead for forgiveness through the merits of a crucified and risen Saviour. It is no-
ble to acknowledge your wrong before Him whom you have wounded by transgres-
sion and rebellion. It lifts you up before men and angels; for 'he that humbleth himself
shall be exalted.' "- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 638.

examples: 1 Samuel 15:13-15; 28:1, 2; John 12:4-6.

"Even facts may be so stated as to convey a false impression."- Testimonies. vol.

"An intention to deceive is what constitutes falsehood. Bya glance of the eye, a
motion of the hand, an expression of the countenance, a falsehood may be told as ef-
fectually as by words. All intentional overstatement, every hint or insinuation calcu-
lated to convey an erroneous or exaggerated impression, even the statement of facts
in such a manner as to mislead, is falsehood."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 309.

3. How does James describe a perfect man? James 3:2.

"Through the help that Christ can give, we shall be able to learn to bridle the
tongue. Sorely as He was tried on the point of hasty and angry speech, He never once
sinned with His lips. With patient calmness He met the sneers, the taunts, and the ridi-
cule of His fellow workers at the carpenter's bench. Instead of retorting angrily, He would
begin to sing one of David's beautiful psalms; and His companions, before realizing what
they were doing, would unite with Him in the hymn. What a transformation would be
wrought in this world if men and women today would follow Christ's example in the
use of words."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 936.

- 20-
4. What description is given about an unruly tongue? James 3:5,6,8.

"Many indulge freely in criticism and accusing. By giving expression to suspi-

cion, jealousy, and discontent, they yield themselves as instruments to Satan. Before
they realize what they are doing, the adversary has through them accomplished his
purpose. The impression of evil has been made, the shadow has been cast, the arrows
of Satan have found their mark. Distrust, unbelief, and downright infidelity have
fastened upon those who otherwise might have accepted Christ. Meanwhile the work-
ers for Satan look complacently upon those whom they have driven to skepticism, and
who are now hardened against reproof and entreaty. They flatter themselves that in
comparison with these souls they are virtuous and righteous. They do not realize that
these sad wrecks of character are the work of their own unbridled tongues and
rebellious hearts." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 340, 341.

THE POWER OF THE TONGUE August 3

5. What is in the power of the tongue? Proverbs 18:21.

"In seeking to correct or reform others we should be careful of our words. They
will be a savor of life unto life or of death unto death. In giving reproof or counsel,
many indulge in sharp, severe speech, words not adapted to heal the wounded soul.
By these ill-advised expressions the spirit is chafed, and often the erring ones are stirred
to rebellion. All who would advocate the principles of truth need to receive the
heavenly oil of love. Under all circumstances reproof should be spoken in love. Then
our words will reform but not exasperate. Christ by His Holy Spirit will supply the
force and the power."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 337.

6. What warning against evilspeaking should be given serious consideration?

Psalm 101:5.

"What a world of gossip would be prevented if every man would remember that
those who tell him the faults of others will as freely publish his faults at a favorable
opportunity. We should endeavor to think well of all men, especially our brethren, un-
til compelled to think otherwise. We should not hastily credit evil reports. These are
often the result of envy or misunderstanding, or they may proceed from exaggeration
or a partial disclosure of facts." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 58.
"Evilspeaking is a twofold curse, falling more heavily upon the speaker than
upon the hearer. He who scatters the seeds of dissension and strife reaps in his own
soul the deadly fruits. The very act of looking for evil in others develops evil in those
who look. "-The Ministry of Healing, p. 492.

7. What reformation is needed among us concerning the proper use of the

tongue? Psalm 34:12-15; Ephesians 4:29; James 3:14.

"Truth is of God; deception, in everyone of its myriad forms, is of Satan; and

whoever in any way departs from the straight line of truth is betraying himself into
the power of the wicked one. Yet it is not a light or an easy thing to speak the exact
truth. We cannot speak the truth unless we know the truth; and how often precon-
ceived opinions, mental bias, imperfect knowledge, errors of judgment, prevent a

- 21-
right understanding of matters with which we have to do! We cannot speak the truth
unless our minds are continually guided by Him who is truth."-Thoughts From the
Mount of Blessing, p. 68.

8. What admonition does Christ give us in this respect? Matthew 5:37; 12:36,37.

"These words [Matthew 5:37] condemn all those meaningless phrases and ex-
pletives that border on profanity. They condemn the deceptive compliments, the eva-
sion of truth, the flattering phrases, the exaggerations, the misrepresentations in
trade, that are current in society and in the business world. They teach that no one
who tries to appear what he is not, or whose words do not convey the real sentiment
of his heart, can be called truthful.
"If these words of Christ were heeded, they would check the utterance of evil
surmising and unkind criticism; for in commenting upon the actions and motives of
another, who can be certain of speaking the exact truth? How often pride, passion,
personal resentment, color the impression given! A glance, a word, even an intonation
of the voice, may be vital with falsehood." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 68.

VICTORY OVER THE SINS OF THE TONGUE AugustS

9. How did king David control his tongue? Psalm 39:1-3. What advice is given
to those who are striving for the immortal inheritance?

"If you are striving for the immortal inheritance with an earnestness, energy,
and zeal proportionate to its value, then can you be a fair candidate for everlasting
life, and heir of glory. You need a fresh conversion every day. Die daily to self, keep
your tongue as with a bridle, control your words, cease your murmurings and com-
plaints, let not one word of censure escape your lips. If this requires a great effort,
make it; you will be repaid in so doing."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 699.

10. How is victory over the sins of the tongue possible? Philippians 4:13; Luke
6:45 (first part).

"If the heart is right, your words, your dress, your acts, will all be right. True
godliness is lacking. I would not dishonor my Master so much as to admit that a care-
less, trifling, prayerless person is a Christian. No; a Christian has victory over his be-
setments, over his passions. There is a remedy for the sin-sick soul. That remedy is in

"In the epistle to the Hebrews is pointed out the single hearted purpose that
should characterize the Christian's race for eternal life.... Envy, malice, evil think-
ing, evilspeaking, covetousness-these are weights that the Christian must lay aside
if he would run successfully the race for immortality. Every habit or practice that
leads into sin and brings dishonor upon Christ must be put away, whatever the sacri-
fice. The blessing of heaven cannot attend any man in violating the eternal principles
of right. One sin cherished is sufficient to work degradation of character and to
mislead others."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 312.

5. How can false faith be identified? James 2:14, 17,20.

"Presumption is Satan's counterfeit of faith. Faith claims God's promises, and

brings forth fruit in obedience. Presumption also claims the promises, but uses them
as Satan did, to excuse transgression. Faith would have led our first parents to trust
the love of God, and to obey His commands. Presumption led them to transgress His
law, believing that His great love would save them from the consequence of their sin.
It is not faith that claims the favor of Heaven without complying with the conditions
on which mercy is to be granted."- The Desire of Ages, p. 126.
6. By what is true faith characterized? Galatians 5:6; James 2:18, 22. What is
closely associated with true faith? Romans 5:2, 5; 1 Timothy 1:19; 3:9.

"In order for man to be justified by faith, faith must reach a point where it will
control the affections and impulses of the heart; and it is by obedience that faith itself
is made perfect."-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 366.
D Wednesday
A NEW RELATIONSHIP August 18

7. What is the first and most important relationship that is established by true
faith? John 1:12; Galatians 3:26; 2 Corinthians 6:17, 18.

"If you separate from the world in your affections, and remain free from its con-
tamination, escaping the corruption that is in the world through lust, God will be your
Father, He will adopt you into His family, and you will be His heir. In place of the
world, He will give you, for a life of obedience, the kingdom under the whole heavens.
He will give you an eternal weight of glory and a life that is as enduring as eternity."-
Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 44.

8. What other relationship is also established? Matthew 3:9; Galatians 3:7.

"As [God] had called Abraham out from a heathen people, so He could call
others to His service. Their hearts might now appear as lifeless as the stones of the
desert, but His Spirit could quicken them to do His will, and receive the fulfillment of
His promise."-The Desire of Ages, p. 107.
"Descent from Abraham was proved, not by name and lineage, but by likeness
of character."-Ibid., p. 467.

COMING INTO THE UNITY OF THE FAITH August 19

9. When all diversities are overcome, what condition will be reached by those
who are preparing to receive the seal of God? Ephesians 4:5, 13.

"Many people may be brought together in a unity of religious faith whose opin-
ions, habits, and tastes in temporal matters are not in harmony; but if they have the
love of Christ glowing in their bosoms, and are looking forward to the same heaven as

- 27-
their eternal home, they may have the sweetest and most intelligent communion to-
gether, and a unity the most wonderful."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 65.

10. For what are we admonished to contend, especially in the soon-coming cri-
sis? Jude 3 (last part).

"Satan will work with all his deceptive power to influence the heart and becloud
the understanding, to make evil appear good, and good evil. The stronger and purer
the faith of God's people, and the firmer their determination to obey Him, the more
fiercely will Satan strive to stir up against them the rage of those who, while claiming
to be righteous, trample upon the law of God. It will require the firmest trust, the
most heroic purpose, to hold fast the faith once delivered to the saints.
"God desires His people to prepare for the soon-coming crisis. Prepared or un-
prepared, they must all meet it; and those only who have brought their lives into con-
formity to the divine standard, will stand firm at that time of test and trial. When
secular rulers unite with ministers of religion to dictate in matters of conscience, then
it will be seen who really fear and serve God."- The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 431, 432.

CHRIST, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD August 22

1. What did the first coming of Christ represent to many honest souls? Mat-
thew 4:16; John 1:4; 9:5.

"While the light of truth seemed to have departed from among men, there were
souls who were looking for light, and who were filled with perplexity and sorrow.
They were thirsting for a knowledge of the living God, for some assurance of a life
beyond the grave."-The Desire of Ages, p. 32.
"Outside of the Jewish nation there were men who foretold the appearance of a
divine instructor. These men were seeking for truth, and to them the Spirit of Inspira-
tion was imparted. One after another, like stars in the darkened heavens, such
teachers had arisen. Their words of prophecy had kindled hope in the hearts of thou-
sands of the Gentile world."-Ibid., p. 33.
"Men in ignorance and moral darkness must have light, spiritual light; for the
world knew not God, and He must be revealed to their understanding. Truth looked
down from heaven and saw not the reflection of her image; for dense clouds of moral
darkness and gloom enveloped the world, and the Lord Jesus alone was able to roll
back the clouds; for He was the Light of the world." -Fundamentals of Christian Educa-
tion, pp. 176, 177.

2. What did Christ say of those who follow Him? John 8:12.

THE CHURCH, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD August 23

3. In what sense are God's people the light of the world? Matthew 5: 14.

"Christ has made every provision that His church shall be a transformed body, illu-
mined with the Light of the world, possessing the glory of Emmanuel. It is His purpose

- 29-
that every Christian shall be surrounded with a spiritual atmosphere of light and
peace. He desires that we shall reveal His own joy in our lives." -Christ's Object Lessons,
p.419.

4. How are God's people to make use of the light that God has given them?
Isaiah 60:1,2; Matthew 5:15, 16; 2 Corinthians 4:6.

"It is the purpose of God to glorify Himself in His people before the world. He
expects those who bear the name of Christ to represent Him in thought, word, and
deed. Their thoughts are to be pure and their words noble and uplifting, drawing
those around them nearer the Saviour. The religion of Christ is to be interwoven with
all that they do and say."- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 21.

D Tuesday
A SERIOUS DANGER August 24

5. In what danger are those who have received the light of the truth but do not
walk in it? John 12:35; Matthew 6:23.

"Those who will not act when the Lord calls upon them, but who wait for more
certain evidence and more favorable opportunities, will walk in darkness, for the light
will be withdrawn. The evidence given one day, if rejected, may never be repeated."-
Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 258.
"Light becomes darkness to all those who will not walk in it."-Ibid., p. 65.
"Many have for years made no advancement in knowledge and true holiness.
They are spiritual dwarfs. Instead of going forward to perfection, they are going back
to the darkness and bondage of Egypt."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 124.

6. How can we, individually and collectively, escape from this danger? Joel
2:12,13.

"Will the Israel of God awake? Will all who profess godliness seek to put away
every wrong, to confess to God every secret sin, and afflict the soul before Him? Will
they, with great humility, investigate the motives of every action, and know that the
eye of God reads all, searches out every hidden thing? Let the work be thorough, the
consecration to God entire. He calls for a full surrender of all that we have and are.
Ministers and people need a new conversion, a transformation of the mind, without which
we are not savors of life unto life, but of death unto death."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 124.

D Wednesday
THE GREAT COMMISSION August 25

7. What commission did Christ give to the early church and to us? Mark 16: 15,
16.

8. What do we know of the success of the work of the apostolic church? Acts
8:4; 17:6 (last part); Colossians 1:23 (last part).

"The early Christians were indeed a peculiar people. Their blameless deport-
ment and unswerving faith were a continual reproof that disturbed the sinner's peace.
Though few in numbers, without wealth, position, or honorary titles, they were a ter-
ror to evildoers wherever their character and doctrines were known. Therefore they

- 30-
were hated by the wicked, even as Abel was hated by the ungodly Cain."-The Great
Controversy, p. 46.
"Notwithstanding the fierce opposition that the disciples met, in a short time the
gospel of the kingdom had been sounded to all the inhabited parts of the
earth."- Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 15.

o Thursday
THE EARTH LIGHTENED WITH THE GLORY OF GOD August 26

9. What work must be done in all the world before the end shall come? Mat-
thew 24:14; Revelation 14:6-12.

"The message of truth that we bear must go to nations, tongues, and peoples.
Soon it will go with a loud voice, and the earth will be lightened with its glory. Are we
preparing for this great outpouring of the Spirit of God?"- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 383.

10. How and through whom will the world be lightened with the glory of God?
Habakkuk 2:14; Revelation 18:1.

"At this time a message from God is to be proclaimed, a message illuminating in

its influence and saving in its power. His character is to be made known. Into the
darkness of the world is to be shed the light of His glory, the light of His goodness,
mercy, and truth."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 415.
"The last rays of merciful light, the last message of mercy to be given to the
world, is a revelation of His character of love." -Ibid.
"The world can only be warned by seeing those who believe the truth sanctified
through the truth, acting upon high and holy principles, showing in a high, elevated
sense, the line of demarcation between those who keep the commandments of God
and those who trample them under theirfeet."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White

CHRISTIANITY IN THE HOME

"Our homes must be made a Bethel, our hearts a shrine. Wherever the love
of God is cherished in the soul, there will be peace, there will be light and

AN IDEAL CHRISTIAN HOME August 29

1. How did the psalmist describe a blessed home? Psalm 128:1-6.

"Home should be made all that the word implies. It should be a little heaven
upon earth, a place where the affections are cultivated instead of being studiously re-
pressed. Our happiness depends upon this cultivation of love, sympathy, and true
courtesy to one another."- The Adventist Home, p. 15.

2. What spirit should control the members of a Christian family? 1 Peter 3:8;
Philippians 2:3-5; Romans 12:10.

"Every Christian home should have rules; and parents should, in their words and
deportment toward each other, give to the children a precious, living example of what
they desire them to be. Purity in speech and true Christian courtesy should be con-
stantly practiced. Teach the children and youth to respect themselves, to be true to
God, true to principle; teach them to respect and obey the law of God. These prin-
ciples will control their lives and will be carried out in their associations with others.
They will create a pure atmosphere-one that will have an influence that will en-
courage weak souls in the upward path that leads to holiness and heaven."- The
Adventist Home, p. 16.

COUNSELS TO HUSBAND AND WIFE August 30

3. How should a Christian husband treat his wife? Ephesians 5:25, 28; 1 Peter
3:7.

"To the man who is a husband and a father, I would say, Be sure that a pure, ho-
ly atmosphere surrounds your soul. ... You are to learn daily of Christ. Never, never

- 32-
are you to show a tyrannical spirit in the home. The man who does this is working in
partnership with satanic agencies. Bring your will into submission to the will of God.
Do all in your power to make the life of your wife pleasant and happy. Take the word
of God as the man of your counsel. In the home live out the teachings of the word.
Then you will live them out in the church and will take them with you to your place of
business. The principles of heaven will ennoble all your transactions."- The Adventist
Home, pp. 213, 214.

4. What attitude should a Christian wife take toward her husband? Colossians
3:18; 1 Peter 3:1, 2, 5, 6.

"Instead of sinking into a mere household drudge, let the wife and mother take
time to read, to keep herself well informed, to be a companion to her husband, and to
keep in touch with the developing minds of her children. Let her use wisely the oppor-
tunities now hers to influence her dear ones for the higher life. Let her take time to
make the dear Saviour a daily Companion and familiar Friend. Let her take time for
the study of His word, take time to go with the children into the fields and learn of
God through the beauty of His works.
"Let her keep cheerful and buoyant. Instead of spending every moment in end-
less sewing, make the evening a pleasant social season, a family reunion after the
day's duties. Many a man would thus be led to choose the society of his home before
that of the clubhouse or the saloon."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 294.

D Tuesday
THE CHILD'S FIRST SCHOOL August 31

5. What is written about the importance of the home school? Deuteronomy 6:7-9.

"In His wisdom the Lord has decreed that the family shall be the greatest of all
educational agencies. It is in the home that the education of the child is to begin. Here
is his first school. Here, with his parents as instructors, he is to learn the lessons that
are to guide him throughout life-lessons of respect, obedience, reverence, self-
control. The educational influences of the home are a decided power for good or for
evil. They are in many respects silent and gradual, but if exerted on the right side,
they become a far-reaching power for truth and righteousness. If the child is not in-
structed aright here, Satan will educate him through agencies of his choosing. How im-
portant, then, is the school in the home!" -Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 107.

6. What example shows that home schooling was a sacred practice among the
Jews? 2 Timothy 1:5; 3:14, 15. How important is this system in our days?

"In the home school-the first grade-the very best talent should be utilized.
Upon all parents there rests the obligation of giving physical, mental, and spiritual in-
struction. It should be the object of every parent to secure to his child a well-balanced,
symmetrical character. This is a work of no small magnitude and importance-a work
requiring earnest thought and prayer no less than patient, persevering effort. A right
foundation must be laid, a framework, strong and firm, erected, and then day by day
the work of building, polishing, perfecting, must go forward."-Counsels to Parents,
Teachers, and Students, pp. 107, 108.

THE HERITAGE OF THE LORD September 1

7. How should parents train their children? Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4. What
is one of the educational lines to which parents should pay much attention?

"The great work of parents and teachers is character building-seeking to

restore the image of Christ in those placed under their care." -Counsels to Parents,
Teachers, and Students, p. 61.
"Parents, be careful what example and what ideas you give your children. Their
minds are plastic, and impressions are easily made. In regard to the service of the
sanctuary, if the speaker has a blemish, be afraid to mention it. Talk only of the good
work he is doing, of the good ideas he presented, which you should heed as coming
through God's agent. It may be readily seen why children are so little impressed with
the ministry of the word and why they have so little reverence for the house of God.
Their education has been defective in this respect. Their parents need daily commu-
nion with God. Their own ideas need to be refined and ennobled; their lips need to be
touched with a live coal from off the altar; then their habits, their practices at home,
will make a good impression on the minds and characters of their children. The stan-
dard of religion will be greatly elevated. Such parents will do a great work for God.
They will have less earthliness, less sensuality, and more refinement and fidelity at
home. Life will be invested with a solemnity of which they have scarcely conceived.
Nothing will be made common that pertains to the service and worship of God."-
Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 498.

8. In the training of their children, what object should parents have in view?
Psalm 144:12; Isaiah 8:18.

"Children are the heritage of the Lord, and the plan of redemption includes their
salvation as well as ours. They have been entrusted to parents in order that they
might be brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, that they might be
qualified to do their work in time and eternity."-The Adventist Home, p. 280.
"If you would meet God in peace, feed His flock now with spiritual food; for
every child has the possibility of attaining unto eternal life. Children and youth are
God's peculiar treasure." -Ibid.
o Thursday
HOME INFLUENCE: POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE September 2
9. What influence will properly trained Christian youth have upon others? 1
Timothy 4:12; Titus 2:7,8. What responsibility rests upon them?

"Christians should wake up and act. Their influence is telling upon, and molding,
the opinions and habits of others. They will have to bear the weighty responsibility of
deciding by their influence the destiny of souls."-Testimonies, vol. 3, pp. 51, 52.
"Those who have really tasted the sweets of redeeming love will not, cannot,
rest until all with whom they associate are made acquainted with the plan of salvation.
The young should inquire: ' "Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?" How can I honor
and glorify Thy name upon the earth?' Souls are perishing all around us, and yet what
burden do the youth bear to win souls to Christ?" -Ibid., vol. 1, pp. 511, 512.

10. For what will professed Christians and their grown-up children be account-
able? Jeremiah 13:20 (last part).

- 34-
"Men and women, children and youth, are measured in the scales of heaven in
accordance with that which they reveal in their home life." - The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1085.
"Those who might have exerted an influence to save souls had they stood in the
counsel of God, yet failed to do their duty through selfishness, indolence, or because
they were ashamed of the cross of Christ, will not only lose their own souls, but will
have the blood of poor sinners upon their garments. Such will be required to render
an account for the good that they could have done had they been consecrated to God,
but did not do because of their unfaithfulness."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 511.

THE HIGHEST SCIENCE September 6

3. What testimony did Paul give after his conversion? Philippians 3:7, 8;
Romans 1:16.

"In Christ all fullness dwells. He teaches us to count all things but loss for the ex-
cellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus our Lord. This knowledge is the highest
science that any man can reach. It is the sum of all true science."- The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 905.

4. How did Paul exalt the truth that he had found in Christ? 1 Corinthians 2:2;
Philippians 1:21.

"Christ was all and in all to [the apostle Paul]. 'For to me to live is Christ,' he
declared. This is the most perfect interpretation in a few words, in all the Scriptures,
of what it means to be a Christian. This is the whole truth of the gospel. Paul

- 36-
understood what many seem unable to comprehend. How intensely in earnest he was!
His words show that his mind was centered in Christ, that his whole life was bound up
with his Lord. Christ was the author, the support, and the source of his life."-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 903.

A GROWING EXPERIENCE September 7

5. How did Paul show that following Christ is a growing experience? Colos-
sians 1:9, 10; Ephesians 4:11-13,15,16.

"Paul attained to the full moral stature of a man in Christ Jesus. By what a pro-
cess was his soul developed! His life was a continual scene of hardship, conflict, and
toil."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 903.

6. How did Peter teach the same truth that was taught by Paul? 1 Peter 2:2-5;

"It is the Lord's desire that His followers shall grow in grace, that their love shall
abound more and more, that they shall be filled with the fruits of righteousness,
which are by Jesus Christ, unto the praise and glory of God."- The SDA Bible Commen-
tary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 947.

PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE September 8

7. How may grace and peace be increased among the children of God? 2 Peter
1:2-4.

"In His Word God reveals what He can do for human beings. He molds and
fashions after the divine similitude the characters of those who will wear His yoke.
Through His grace they are made partakers of the divine nature, and are thus enabled
to overcome the corruption that is in the world through lust. It is God who gives us
power to overcome. Those who hear His voice and obey His commandments are en-
abled to form righteous characters."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments],
vol. 7, p. 943.

8. How can converted sinners become partakers of the divine nature? Ephe-
sians 2:4-6; Galatians 2:20.

"We must realize that through belief in [Christ] it is our privilege to be partakers
of the divine nature, and so escape the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Then we are cleansed from all sin, all defects of character. We need not retain one
sinful propensity....
"As we partake of the divine nature, hereditary and cultivated tendencies to
wrong are cut away from the character, and we are made a living power for good.
Ever learning of the divine Teacher, daily partaking of His nature, we cooperate with
God in overcoming Satan's temptations. God works, and man works, that man may
be one with Christ as Christ is one with God. Then we sit together with Christ in
heavenly places. The mind rests with peace and assurance in Jeslis."-The SDA Bible

THE PLAN OF ADDITION September 9

9. What is the divine plan for the development of Christ's character in us? 2
Peter 1:5-7; 1 Corinthians 1:30.

"Every soul is to strive with 'all diligence' to add constantly to his spiritual at-
tainments, strengthening every grace, increasing in efficiency that he may grow in
usefulness and holiness, as a fruit-bearing tree in the Lord's garden."-The SDA Bible
Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 943.
"Weare saved by climbing round after round, mounting step after step, to the
height of Christ's ideal for us. Thus He is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness,
and sanctification, and redemption."- The Acts of the Apostles. p. 530.

10. What knowledge is present with those who are climbing this ladder, round
after round? 2 Peter 1:8. What assurance is given them? 2 Peter 1:10, 11.

"Here [2 Peter 1:10, 11] are your life-insurance papers. This is not an insurance
policy the value of which some one else will receive after your death; it is a policy that
assures you a life measuring with the life of God-even eternal life. 0 what an assur-
ance! what a hope! Let us reveal to the world that we are seeking for a better country,
even a heavenly. Heaven has been made for us, and we want a part in it. We cannot
afford to allow anything to separate us from God and heaven. In this life we must be
partakers of the divine nature. Brethren and sisters, you have only one life to live. 0
let it be a life of virtue, a life hid with Christ in God." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.

yoking up with Him. All who will accept the condition will find that the yoke of Christ
will help them to bear every burden needful for them to carry. Without Christ at our
side to bear the heaviest part of the load, we must indeed say that it is heavy. But yoked

He loved. The very principle that actuated Christ will actuate them in all their dealing

ye are My disciples,' said Jesus, 'if ye have love one to another.' When men are bound
together, not by force or self-interest, but by love, they show the working of an in-
fluence that is above every human influence. Where this oneness exists, it is evidence
that the image of God is being restored in humanity, that a new principle of life has
been implanted. It shows that there is power in the divine nature to withstand the
supernatural agencies of evil, and that the grace of God subdues the selfishness in-
herent in the natural heart."- The Desire of Ages, p. 678.

SANCTIFICATION THROUGH THE TRUTH September 14

5. In what words did Christ announce Himself as the embodiment of the truth?
John 14:6.

"Christ is the truth. His words are truth, and they have a deeper significance
than appears on the surface. All the sayings of Christ have a value beyond their un-
pretending appearance. Minds that are quickened by the Holy Spirit will discern the
value of these sayings. They will discern the precious gems of truth, though these
may be buried treasures." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 110.

6. In what way do God's people identify themselves with the truth? John
16:13; 17:17; 8:32; 1 Peter 1:22.

"Christ became incarnate in order that we, through belief of the truth, might be
sanctified and redeemed. Let those who hold the truth in righteousness arouse and go
forth, shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, to proclaim the truth to those
who know it not. Let them make straight paths for their feet, lest the lame be turned
out of the way."-Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 211, 212.

7. What is Christ's main attribute as our Advocate? 1 John 2:1,29.

8. How do we become partakers of Christ's righteousness? Romans 5:18, 19;

1 John 1:9; 2 Corinthians 5:21.

"Notwithstanding the defects of the people of God, Christ does not turn away
from the objects of His care. He has the power to change their raiment. He removes

righteousness, and writes pardon against their names on the records of heaven."-
Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 169, 170.
"Christ in His humanity wrought out a perfect character, and this character He

GOD IS HOLY AND PERFECT September 16

9. What did God say about His character? Leviticus 19:2; 1 Peter 1:16.

"As Jehovah is holy, He requires His people to be holy, pure, undefiled; for
without holiness no man shall see the Lord."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White

"Let all remember that God is holy and that none but holy beings can ever dwell
in His presence."-Early Writings, p. 71.

10. What did Christ say about the character of the Father? Matthew 5:48.

"[Earnest workers] behold the Saviour, and by beholding become changed into
His likeness. He is the One whose example we are to follow in our character building.
In His life upon the earth He plainly revealed the divine nature. We should strive to
be perfect in our sphere, as He was perfect in His sphere."-Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 86.

HOLINESS

"Holiness is wholeness to God. The soul is surrendered to God. The will, and
even the thoughts, are brought into subjection to the will of Christ. The love
of Jesus fills the soul, and is constantly going out in a clear, refreshing
stream, to make glad the hearts of others." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments), vol. 6, p. 1076.

see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14).

GOD'S STANDARD FOR HIS PEOPLE September 19
1. What is God's standard for His people? 1 Thessalonians 4:3, 7.

"Those who experience the sanctification of the Bible will manifest a spirit of
humility. Like Moses, they have had a view of the awful majesty of holiness, and they
see their own unworthiness in contrast with the purity and exalted perfection of the
Infinite One."-The Great Controversy, p. 470.
"There can be no self-exaltation, no boastful claim to freedom from sin, on the
part of those who walk in the shadow of Calvary's cross. They feel that it was their sin
which caused the agony that broke the heart of the Son of God, and this thought will
lead them to self-abasement. Those who live nearest to Jesus discern most clearly the
frailty and sinfulness of humanity, and their only hope is in the merit of a crucified
and risen Saviour."-Ibid., p. 471.
2. For what purpose has God set up this standard for His church? Hebrews
12:10; Ephesians 5:26, 27; 1 Corinthians 1:7,8.

PARTAKERS OF GOD'S HOLINESS September 20
q. How can we become partakers of God's holiness? llebrews 12:12-15; Titus
2:1~-14. Of what mistaken ideas of sanctification should we beware?

"The sanctification now gaining prominence in the religious world carries with it
a spirit of self-exaltation and a disregard for the law of God that mark it as foreign to
the religion of the Bible. Its advocates teach that sanctification is an instantaneous
work, by which, through faith alone, they attain to perfect holiness. 'Only believe,'
say they, 'and the blessing is yours.' No further effort on the part of the receiver is sup-
posed to be required. At the same time they deny the authority of the law of God, urging
that they are released from obligation to keep the commandments."-The Great Con-
troversy, p. 471.

-42 -
"Let none deceive themselves with the belief that they can become holy while
willfully violating one of God's requirements."-Ibid., p. 472.

4. How do we know that this is not an instantaneous experience but a pro-

gressive work? 2 Corinthians 7:1.

"The Scriptures plainly show that the work of sanctification is progressive.

When in conversion the sinner finds peace with God through the blood of the atone-
ment, the Christian life has but just begun. Now he is to 'go on unto perfection;' to
grow up 'unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.' "- The Great Con-
troversy, p. 470.

THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN US September 21

5. Through whom are we able to reach God's standard and live holy lives?
Philippians 4:19; Romans 8:37; 1 Corinthians 15:57; Jude 24.

"There must be a power working from within, a new life from above, before men
can be changed from sin to holin~ss. That power is Christ."-Steps to Christ, p. 18.
"We can overcome. Yes; fully, entirely. Jesus died to make a way of escape for
us, that we might: overcome every evil temper, every sin, every temptation, and sit
down at last with Him."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 144.
"To every one who surrenders fully to God is given the privilege of living without
sin, in obedience to the law of heaven."-The Review and Herald, September 27,1906.

6. In what way can we be overcomers in Christ? 1 John 3:3; 1 Peter 1:22; 1

Corinthians 6:11.

"[Christ] came to destroy the works of the devil, and He has made provision that
the Holy Spirit shall'be imparted to every repentant soul, to keep him from sinning."-
The Desire of Ages, p. 311.
"It is the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, which Jesus said He would send into the
world, that changes our character into the image of Christ; and when this is accom-
plished, we reflect as in a mirror the glory of the Lord. That is, the character of the
one who thus beholds Christ is so like His that one looking at him sees Christ's own
character shining out as from a mirror. Imperceptibly to ourselves, we are changed
day by day from our ways and will into the ways and will of Christ, into the loveliness
of His character. Thus we grow up into Christ, and unconsciously reflect His image."
- The Review and Herald, December 5, 1912.

MIND AND BODY September 22

7. What scriptural evidence shows that, in the work of sanctification, there is

an interaction between the mind (which is the spiritual heart) and the body?
Romans 12:1,2.

"Christians are bidden to present their bodies, 'a living sacrifice, holy, accept-
able unto God.' In order to do this, all their powers must be preserved in the best pos-
sible condition. Every practice that weakens physical or mental strength unfits man
for the service of his Creator. And will God be pleased with anything less than the
best we can offer? Said Christ: 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart.'

-43 -
Those who do love God with all the heart will desire to give Him the best service of
their life, and they will be constantly seeking to bring every power of their being into
harmony with the laws that will promote their ability to do His will. They will not,
by the indulgence of appetite or passion, enfeeble or defile the offering which they
present to their heavenly Father."-The Great Controversy, pp. 473, 474.

8. What loss will those suffer who defile their bodies? 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17;
6:19. How will God use those who do not defile themselves?

"The Lord has given His holy commandments to be a wall of protection around
His created beings, and those who will keep themselves from the defilement of appetite
and passion may become partakers of the divine nature. Their perceptions will be clear.
They will know how to preserve every faculty in health, so that it may be presented to
God in service."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1105.

HOLY HEARTS September 23

9. What preparation is required today in view of the soon coming of Christ? 1

Thessalonians 3:12, 13; 1 John 3:2.

"Not even by a thought did (Jesus] yield to temptation. So it may be with us.
Christ's humanity was united with divinity; He was fitted for the conflict by the in-
dwelling of the Holy Spirit. And He came to make us partakers of the divine nature.
So long as we are united to Him by faith, sin has no more dominion over us. God
reaches for the hand of faith in us to direct it to lay fast hold upon the divinity of
.Christ, that we may attain to perfection of character."- The Desire of Ages, p. 123.

10. When Christ comes, in what state of preparation will He find the living
saints? 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

"The true Christian obtains an experience which brings holiness. He is without a

spot of guilt upon the conscience, or a taint of corruption upon the soul. The spirituali-
ty of the law of God, with its limiting principles, is brought into his life. The light of
truth irradiates his understanding. A glow of perfect love for the Redeemer clears
away the miasma which has interposed between his soul and God. The will of God has
become his will, pure, elevated, refined, and sanctified. His countenance reveals the
light of heaven. His body is a fit temple for the Holy Spirit. Holiness adorns his
character. God can commune with him; for soul and body are in harmony with God."
-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 909.
