Largest CCA Banquet
in the State!
On September 20th the Ascension Chapter of
Coastal Conservation Association hosted their 18th
annual membership banquet at Lamar Dixon Expo
Center. Once again, the conservationists and
sportsmen of Ascension Parish came
together to host the largest CCA banquet
in the state! Over 1,100 people
gathered together to celebrate the
fantastic work of CCA Louisiana
while renewing their membership
and raising funds for the future.

Festivities began with a social

hour and silent auction, followed
by a fantastic dinner by Catering
Cajun. There were many unique
donated items, which made for

issues in Louisiana.
CCA’s efforts to create fish
habitats are as important as
the fisheries management.

Weezie Cashat opened her
home in Pelican Point to the
Gonzales Garden Club for its

The Gonzales Garden Club chose the home of Sharon and Dane Girouard at 1130
E. Angela Street for the October Residential Yard of the Month. This yard is neatly
manicured using gardenias, Indian hawthorne, and azaleas plus several crepe
myrtles of white, pink, and red. Under the myrtles are variegated gingers, agapan-
thus, and ground cover. Pink, white and lavender vinca, white petunias and peach
drift roses sprinkle color among the evergreen shrubs. Various garden ornaments
add interesting focal points along the beds of this landscape.
The Gonzales Garden Club chose The Bug Man Professional Pest Control for its
October Commercial Landscape of the Month. It is located at 511 E. New River
Street off Airline Hwy near McDonald’s Restaurant. This appealing property is
compact and neat. It features a hedge of gardenias across the facade and an
island flower bed centered in the lawn. A large cluster of bright pink caladiums
stands in the center of a mounded border of deep red vincas that accentuate
the business sign, doors and shutters.

Benefit Rules
Change, Some
Taking Immediate
Action
Though there has been talk
of change for years, the rules
surrounding Veterans Aid &
Attendance have remained the
same until recently the Department
of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced
a few weeks ago that it was making
big changes that would take place
in less than 30 days.
The VA has finalized new rules
that make it more difficult to

care benefits. The rules establish an
asset limit, a look-back period, and
an asset transfer penalties for those
applying for VA pension benefits.
The VA offers Aid and
Attendance to low-income veterans
(or their spouses) who are in
nursing homes or who need help
at home or in assisted living with
everyday tasks like dressing or
bathing. Aid and Attendance
provides money to those who
need assistance.
Currently, to be eligible for Aid
and Attendance a veteran (or the
veteran’s surviving spouse) must
meet certain income and asset
limits. The asset limits aren’t
specified, but $80,000 is the
amount usually considered the
maximum asset limit to qualify for
the benefit. However, unlike with
the Medicaid program, there
historically have been no penalties
if an applicant divests him- or
herself of assets before applying.
That is, before now you could
transfer assets over the VA’s limit
before applying for benefits and
the transfers would not affect
eligibility.
Not so anymore. The new
regulations set a net worth limit
of $123,600, which is the current
maximum amount of assets (in
spouse is allowed to retain. But in
the case of the VA, this number
will include both the applicant’s
assets and income. It will be
indexed to inflation in the same
way that Social Security increases.
An applicant’s house and up to a
two-acre lot will not count as an
asset even if the applicant is
currently living in a nursing home.
Applicants will also be able to
deduct medical expenses – now
including payments to assisted and
independent living facilities, as a
result of the new rules – from
their income.
The regulations also establish a
three-year look-back provision.
Applicants will have to disclose all
financial transactions they were
involved in for three years before
the application. Applicants who
transferred assets to put themselves
below the net worth limit within
three years of applying for benefits
will be subject to a penalty period
that can last as long as five years.
This penalty is a period of time
during which the person who
transferred assets is not eligible for
VA benefits. There are exceptions
to the penalty period for fraudulent
transfers and for transfers to a trust
for a child who is unable to
"self-support."
Under the new rules, the VA will
determine a penalty period in
months by dividing the amount
transferred that would have put the
applicant over the net worth limit
rate (MAPR) for a veteran with
one dependent in need of aid and
attendance. For example, assume
the net worth limit is $123,600
and an applicant has a net worth
of $115,000. The applicant

This month, Houmas House
welcomes the return of Executive
Chef Jeremy Langlois who opened
the flagship restaurant Latil's
Landing at Houmas House in
2005. Langlois was instrumental in

a tourist attraction.

I could have stayed with
either group all night but there
was a trio arguing in the far
corner that I could not ignore.
As I strolled closer, I
recognized former Presidential
candidate John McCain
officiating a spirited debate
between the Liberal Lion Ted
Kennedy and the ultra-
conservative Supreme Court
Justice Antonin Scalia.
McCain was trying any tactful
method he had to find some
common ground between the
political polar opposites-even
resorting to, “But you’re
both Catholic.”
Finally, in desperation, the
Arizona senator screamed,
“Compromise! This country
was saved a thousand times
by compromise!”
And that’s when I awoke.
As I pondered the characters
and comments in my dream I
couldn’t help but think. What
if-musicians did go back to
their roots and produce
something to honor the
pioneers of country and
rock-and-roll? What if-the NFL
did come to its senses and let
the players play-even if it is
risk and reward-and make the
officials invisible again? And
what if-this great country’s
leaders could reach
compromises to bring the
masses closer instead of more
divisions?

It’s 7:45 and I’ve heard a loud
crash outside of my house. I open
the door and see a large oak limb
that has fallen because of the
weight of the snow. It has fallen on
my gas meter in the front yard. I
manage to roll it off of the meter
and the meter doesn’t seem to be
leaking. That’s luck. Now back to
the subject. Sometimes we make
the correct choice at being success-
ful on days that we go and some-
times maybe we do not. One things
for certain. You’ll never know what
could have been on those days
when the decision was made to stay
at home. Each to their own, but
there are certain times that I just
don’t feel like fooling with a dead
deer for a number of reasons. I
guess it comes with age. At this
particular moment with four inches
of snow on the ground, wrecks on
the highway and branches falling
out of trees I’m content being at
home. Would I have been success-
ful this morning if I would have
gone? Who knows? Will I go for
the evening hunt? I don’t know
yet...I’ll make up my mind later.
One things for sure, I won’t shoot
one sitting here and for the mo-
ment that’s alright. At present I’m
praying that this heavy snowfall
quits before the weight of it harms
my house or property. That’s way
more important than killing a deer
at this time.....

Keeping My Promise
Ascension Magazine made a
few promises while I was out
taking photos this past month.
First I got up early to watch
the balloons take off from
St. Amant. There was a Mom
there that was originally from
Iowa and now lives in Denham
Springs. I promised the kids for
getting up so early I’d put them
in this issue. This is my

Pelican Point Golfers Invade the 44th
Annual Slavic Invitational Golf Tournament
Growing in depth as in number, the 44th Annual Slavic
Invitational golf tournament returned with arguably its strongest
field in the four-decade history of the event.
About 520 two-man teams pre-registered to expand the 2018
Slavic in its popularity and strengthens its claim to being the
largest 54-hole amateur golf tournament in the country.
Many of my friends and golfers from Pelican Point migrated for
the weekend event. Whether they won anything or not I can
guarantee these guys had the most fun and drank the most beer.

6 mirlitons
1 ½ lbs baby shrimp
2 cups finely chopped onion
1 cup finely chopped celery
1 cup finely chopped bell pepper
2 tbls minced garlic
½ cup thinly sliced green onions
¼ cup creole mustard
1 ½ cups bread crumbs
(more or less depending on your preference)
Salt, black pepper and red pepper to taste.
(2 tsp salt, 1 tsp black pepper, ½ tsp red pepper)

Method:
Place the miriltons in a large pot and cover with water. Bring the
water to a boil and cook for about 20 minutes or until tender.
Drain in a colander and cool. When cool enough to handle, half the
mirlitons, peel, then remove the seeds and cut into cubes.

SHRIMP & MIRLITON STUFFING (Chayote) While the militons are cooking, cook your onions, celery, bell
pepper and garlic in a little olive oil until tender. Add the mirlitons
and shrimp and cook until shrimp are done (about 15 minutes).
Prep: Remove from heat, then add the creole mustard, green onions,
bread crumbs and seasoning. Mix well.
40 minutes
Cook Time: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In a greased baking dish, evenly
25 minutes spread your stuffing and bake for 20-25 minutes or until brown.
Servings: Sprinkle the top with parmesan cheese and serve.
