QUARTERLY
The first two quarters of this year are dedicated to the important subject
of Revival and Reformation. Although they were previously studied several
years ago, it was felt that they would be timely for study now. They will
be of great value to the members of the Reform Movement, and especially
to those who are isolated and do not have the opportunity of fellowship
and Bible studies.
Many do not have sufficient knowledge of the different points of doctrine
and prophecy upon which this Movement is based. Those who have refused
the Message of Reformation have tried to misrepresent us and prejudice
interested sincere souls who are inclined to accept the message. May the
message in this pamphlet help to clear the doubts and questions that arise
in the minds of many.
The evidence and statements in these lessons will be as a clear light
shining upon the pathway of the sincere. And as time draws closer to the
end, the distinction between God's true people and those who profess
to serve Him will be more plain. The great multitude will take with them
all the false religions and the half-converted Advent believers; and the
elect of God will be in another class under the banner of Prince Emmanuel.
Study during these two quarters Great Controversy and Early Writings,
as they will be a great help in the proper understanding of this all-important
subject. May the Lord's blessing rest upon these lessons and those who
study them.

Lesson No. 1 - Sabbath, January 7, 1961
Questions
1. When did the period of the Dark Ages end? DaniellO: 14; 12: 9.
NOTE: "... This period ended in 1798. The coming of Christ could not
take place before that time. Paul covers with his caution the whole of the
Christian dispensation down to the year 1798. It is this side of that
time that the message of Christ's second coming is to be proclaimed."
-Great Controversy p. 356.
(For further study read Great Controversy, page 356, paragraphs 1 and
2.) .
2. Where was God's true church to be found at that time? Revelation
3: 2.
NOTE: There is no doubt that God's true people were to be found in
the various denominations of Protestantism which had long before sep-
arated from the church of Rome.
"In this message, God had sent to the church a warning, which, had
it been accepted, would have corrected the evils that were shutting them
away from Him." -Ibid., p. 379.
3. Who was the first missionary sent from England in 1792?
ANSWER: "... In 1792, 'the Baptist society was founded, with Carey
as one of its first missionaries. Carey sailed for India, and there, with the
help of other members of the same society, founded the mission of Seram-
pore,' In 1795, the London Missionary Society was founded; in 1799, th~re
was formed 'the organization which in 1812 became the Church Mission~ry
Society: Soon afterward, the Wesleyan Missionary Society was founded,"
-Ibid., p. 686.
4. How many years passed until the Americans sent missionaries into
heathen lands?
ANSWER: "'While the missionary activity was growing up in Great Bri-
tain, the Christians of America were becoming animated with a like zeal,'
In 1812, they founded the American Baptist Missionary Union. Adoniram
Judson, one of the first missionaries to go out from America, sailed for
Calcutta in 1812, and reached Burma in July, 1813. In 1837, The Pres-
byterian Board was formed," -Ibid., p. 687.
5. In what year was the British lind Foreign Bible Society foimded?
What WIIS the result of their labor up to the year 1910?
-3-
ANSWER: "... Since France made war upon God's two witnesses, they
have been honored as never before. In 1804 the British and Foreign Bible
Society was organized. This was followed by similar organizations, with
numerous branches, upon the continent of Europe...." -Ibid., p. 287.
"A hundred years later, at the close of its first centenary, the British
and Foreign Bible Society was able to report a total distribution of Bibles,
Testaments, or portions thereof, by that Society alone, to the number of
186,680,101-a total that in 1910, had grown to upwards of 220,000,000
copies, in nearly four hundred distinct tongues." -Ibid., p. 686.
6. In what year was the American Bible Society organized?
ANSWER: "In 1816 the American Bible Society was founded." -Ibid., p.
287.
7. What is said of the work of some English Reformers?
ANSWER: "The English Reformers, while renouncing the doctrines of
Romanism, had retained many of its forms. Thus though the authority and
the creed of Rome were rejected, not a few of her customs and cere-
monies were incorporated into the worship of the Church of England."
-Ibid., p. 289.
8. Who was one of the most devoted men among the English Reformers?
ANSWER: "John Robinson, their pastor, who was providentially prevented
from accompanying them, in his farewell address to- the exiles said:
"'Brethren, we are now ere long to part asunder, and the Lord knoweth
whether I shall live ever to see your faces more. But whether the Lord
hath appointed it or not, I charge you before God and His blessedi angels
to follow me no farther than I have followed Christ. If God should reveal
anything to you by any other instrument of His, be as ready to receive it
as ever you were to receive any truth of my ministry; for I am very con-
fident the Lord hath more truth and light yet to break forth out of His
holy word.' "-Ibid., pp. 291, 292.
9. Where did the Puritans find refuge?
ANSWER: "... Some at last determined to seek refuge in Holland. Diffi-
culties, losses and imprisonment were encountered. Their purposes were
thwarted, and they were betrayed into the hands of their enemies. But
steadfast perseverance finally conquered, and they found shelter on the
friendly shores of the Dutch Republic." -Ibid., p. 290.
10. In what country did they finally find their freedom? Who was one
of the most prominent among the pilgrim fathers?
ANSWER: "Eleven years after the planting of the first colony, Roger Wil-
liams came to the New 'Vorld.... Williams 'was the first person in modern
Christendom to establish civil government on the doctrine of the liberty
of conscience, the equality of opinions before the law.' "-Ibid., p. 293.
-4-
In this way, the defenders of the gospel message and religious liberty
found a home of peace where they could develop their important mission.
Those who suffered restriction and persecution were able to understand
the price of liberty of conscience and religious freedom.
MODERN REVIVALS
Questions
Questions
1. What does the True Witness say in regard to the professed Protes-
tant churches? Revelation 3: 1.
2. What was the spiritual state of those churches which previously
separated from Rome? Were they prepared to receive the Advent
doctrine? Ezekiel 16: 44.
NOTE: "But as the spirit of humility and devotion in the church had
given place to pride and formalism, love for Christ and faith in His coming
had grown cold. Absorbed in worldliness and pleasure-seeking, the professed
people of God were blinded to the Saviour's instructions concerning the
signs of His appearing. The doctrine of the second advent had been ne-
glected; the scriptures relating to it were obscured by misinterpretation,
until it was, to a great extent, ignored and forgotten...." -Great Contro-
versy, p. 309.
3. Who was chosen by God to proclaim the first angel's message? Reve-
lation 10: 1.
NOTE: "To William Miller and his co-laborers it was given to preach
the warning in America. This country became the center of the great Ad-
vent Movement. It was here that the prophecy of the first angel's message
had its most direct fulfillment. .. ," -Ibid., p. 368.
4. To what work did God call William Miller and those associated with
him?
ANSWER: "To prepare a pegple to stand in the day of God, a great
work of reform was to be accomplished. God saw that many of His pro-
fessed people were not building for eternity, and in His mercy He was
about to send a message of warning to arouse them from their stupor,
and lead them to make ready for the coming of the Lord." -Ibid., p. 311.
5. How were Christ's words fulfilled in the proclamation of this mes-
sage? On which side did the leaders find themselves? Matthew 11: 25.
NOTE: "It was not the scholarly theologians who had an understanding of
this truth, and engaged in its proclamation. Had these been faithful watch-
-7-
men, diligently and prayerfully searching the Scriptures, they would have
known the time of night; the prophecies would have opened to them
the events about to take place. But they did not! occupy this position, and
the message was given by humbler men...." -Ibid., p. 312.
It should be noticed that William Miller was not a leader in the Pro-
testant churches. God chose him entirely from outside of the other churches
and in a different way for this special work.
6. What was the content and the object of this message? Revelation
14: 6, 7.
7. Through what experience did William Miller and his co-laborers
pass? Revelation 10: 2, 10.
NOTE: "Jesus did not come to the earth as the waiting, joyful company
expected, to cleanse the sanctuary by purifying the earth by fire." -Early
Writings, p. 243.
8. Where was the mistake in William Miller's reckoning?
ANSWER: "Their mistake consisted in not understanding what the sanc-
hlary was, and the nature of its cleansing." -Ibid.
9 .What was the general attitude of the popular ministry to this mes-
age? Isaiah 9: 16.
NOTE: "Ministers who would not accept this saving message themselves
hindered those who would have received it. The blood of souls is upon
them. Preachers and people joined to oppose this message from heaven,
and to persecute William Miller and those who united with him in the
work. .. ." -Ibid., p. 234.
10. After the close of the 2,300 day period, is there any warranty for
setting of a time for the coming of Christ?
ANSWER: "... The more frequently a definite time is set for the second
advent, and the more widely it is taught, the better it suits the purposes
of Satan. After the time has passed, he excites ridicule and contempt of
its advocates, and thus casts reproach upon the great Advent Movement of
1843 and 1844. Those who persist in this error will at last fix upon a date
too far in the future for the coming of Christ. Thus they will be led to
rest in a false security, and many will not be undeceived until it is too
late." -Great Controversy, p. 457.
"To stand in defense of truth and righteousness when the majority forsake
us, to fight the battles of the Lord when champions are few,-this wiU be
our test. At this time we must gather warmth from the coldness of others,
courage from their cowardice, and loyalty from their treason." -5T 136.

Lesson No.4 - Sabbath, January 28, 1961
THE SECOND ANGEL'S MESSAGE
Questions
1. After the first disappointment, what did the sincere believers dis-
cover in their investigation? Revelation 14: 8.
2. What was the res~t of refusing the first angel's message? Where
did the faithful fina themselves?
ANS\VER: "As the churches refused to receive the first angel's message,
they rejected the light from heaven, and fell from the favor of God. They
trusted to their own strength, and by opposing the first message placed
themselves where they could not see the light of the second angel's mes-
sage. But the beloved of God, who were oppressed, accepted the message,
'Babylon is fallen' and left the churches." -Early Writings, p. 237.
3. What Bible truth was applied in this connection?
ANSWER: "Then I heard a voice saying to those who had been pushed
and derided, 'Come out from among them, and touch not the unclean.'
In obedience to this voice, a large number broke the cords which bound
them, and leaving the companies that were in darkness, joined those who
had previously gained their freedom, and joyfully united their voices
with them... ." -Early Writings, p. 242.
4. What gave power to the second angel's message? Matthew 25: 6.
NOTE: "Near the close of the second angel's message, I saw a great
light from heaven shining upon the people of God. The rays of this light
seemed bright as the sun. And I heard the voices of angels saying, 'Behold,
the Bridegroom cometh, go ye out to meet Him!' " -Ibid., p. 238.
5. Who was the first to see the light of the second angel's message?
Was it those who had led out in the first angel's message?
ANSWER: "... The most spiritual received this message first, and those
who had formerly led in the work were the last to receive and help swell
the c~, 'Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him!'" -Ibid.
6. In what perplexing position did the believers find themsdves? When
loyalty to God conflicts with loyalty to the church, what is the only
course open? Acts 5: 29.
NOTE: "... Thus the believers found themselves in a position of great
trial and perplexity. They loved their churches, and were loath to separate
from them; but as they saw the testimony of God's word suppressed, and
their right to investigata the prophecies denied, they felt that loyalty to
God forbade them to submit. Those who sought to shut out the testimony
of God's word, they could not regard as constituting the church of Christ,
-9-
/
'the pillar and ground of the truth.' Hence they felt themselves justified
in separating from their fonner connection. In the summer of 1844 about
fifty thousand withdrew from the churches." -Great Controversy, p. 376.
7. Which was the first and which was the second fixed date for the
coming of the Lord?
ANSWER: March 21, 1844 and October 22, 1844.
8. What was the attitude of the former leaders of the Advent Move-
ment when the light of the third angel's message was revealed?
ANSWER: "... And as he would lean toward the light from heaven,
these men would lay some plan to draw his mind away. A human influence
was exerted to keep him in darkness, and to retain his influence amQng
those who opposed the truth. At length William Miller raised his voice
against the light from heaven." -Early Writings, p. 257.
9. What did the small group do after the great disappointment?
ANSWER: "It was represented to me that the remnant followed Jesus
into the most holy place, and beheld the ark and the mercy-seat, and were
captivated with their glory. Jesus then raised the cover of the ark, and
lot the tables of stone, with the ten commandments written upon them.
They trace down the lively oracles, but start back with trembling when
they see the fourth commandment among the ten holy precepts, with a
brighter light shining upon it than upon the other nine, and a halo of
glory all around it...." -Early Writings, p. 255.
10. After much investigation, what firm foundation of faith was laid
down? How important are these messages to our soul's salvation?
ANSWER: "... I was shown three steps,-the first, second, and third
angels' messages. Said my accompanying angel, 'Woe to him who shall
move a block or stir a pin of these messages. The true understanding of
these messages is of vital importance. The destiny of souls hangs upon the
manner in which they are received.''' -Ibid., p. 258.
Questions
1. What was the first doctrinal point to be considered after the day
of disappointment in 1844? Daniel 8: 14.
2. Where in the three angels' messages is the sanctuary doctrine to
be found? Revelation 14: 7.
-10-
NOTE: "... The message of salvation has been preached in all ages;
but this message is a part of the gospel which could be proclaimed only
in the last days, for only then would it be true that the hour of judgment
had come. The prophecies present a succession of events leading down to
the opening of the judgment. This is especially true of the book of Daniel.
But that part of his prophecy which related to the last days, Daniel was
bidden to close up and seal 'to the time of the end.' Not till we reach
this time could a message concerning the judgment be proclaimed, based
on a fulfilment of these prophecies. But at the time of the end, says the
prophet, 'many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.'''
-Great Controversy, p. 356.
3. What view given to the prophet John portrayed the change of ministry
in the heavenly sanctuary? Who opened the door into the most holy
place? Revelation 3: 7, 8.
NOTE: "After Jesus opened the door of the most holy, the light of the
Sabbath was seen, and the people of God were tested, as the children
of Israel were tested anciently, to see if they would keep God's law."
-Ea1'ly Writings, p. 254.
4. What special truth was opened up to the faithful remnant after the
passing of the time in 1844? Revelation 11: 19.
NOTE: "As the ministration of Jesus closed in the holy place, and He
passed into the holiest, and stood before the ark containing the law of
God, He sent another mighty angel with a third message to the world."
-Ibid.
5. How important is the sanctuary doctrine to God's people today?
Psalm 77: 13.
NOTE: "The correct understanding of the ministration in the heavenly
sanctuary is the foundation of our faith." -Letter 208, 1906.
6. Since light has been given on the sanctuary doctrine, can God ac·
knowledge the worship of those professed Christians who refuse to
accept it? Proverbs 28: 4, 9.
NOTE: "... This door was not opened until the mediation of Jesus was
finished in the holy place of the sanctuary in 1844. Then Jesus rose up
and shut the door of the holy place, and opened the door into the most
holy, and passed within the second vail, where He now stands by the
ark, and where the faith of Israel now reaches." -Early Writings, p. 42.
7. What is the nature of Christ's ministration in the most holy place
since 1844? Can we accept the popular opinion of Christendom
that the atonement was completed on the cross? Acts 3: 19·21.
NOTE: "... Therefore the announcement that the temple of God was
opened in heaven, and the ark of His testament was seen, points to the
opening of the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary, in 1844, as
-11-
Christ entered there to perfonn the closing work of the atonement. Those
who by faith followed their great High Priest, as He entered upon His
ministry in the most holy place, beheld the ark of His testament. As they
had studied the subject of the sanctuary, they had come to understand
the Saviour's change of ministration, and they saw that He was now
officiating before the ark of God, pleading His blood in behalf of sinners."
-Great Controversy, p. 433.
8. What was the key which unlocked the mystery of the great dis·
appointment in 1844?
ANSWER: "The subject of the sanctuary was the key which unlocked
the mystery of the disappointment of 1844. It opened to view a complete
system of truth, connected and hannonious, showing that God's hand had
directed the great Advent Movement, and revealing present duty as it
brought to light the position and work of His people...." -Ibid., p. 423.
9. What subject should be the central point of our educational system?
ANSWER: "In every school established the most simple theory of theo-
logy should be taught. In tIns theory, the atonement of Christ should be
the great substance, the central truth. The wonderful theme of redemption
should be presented to the students." -Evangelism, p. 223.
10. What should be the attitude of the true worshipper in this antitypical
day of atonement? Philippians 2: 12.
NOTE: "While Christ is cleansing the sanctuary, the worshippers on earth
should carefully review their life, and compare their character with the
standard of righteousness." -Ibid., p. 224.
n. In what way does Satan openly attack the sanctuary doctrine?
ANSWER: "... The enemy will bring in false theories, such as the doc·
trine that there is no sanctuary. This is one of the points on which there
will be a departing from the faith. Where shall we find safety unless it
De in the truths that the Lord has been giving for the last fifty years?"
-Ibid.
12. How has Satan succeeded in deceiving those who claim to believe in
the sanctuary truth?
ANSWER: "Men will employ every means to make less prominent the
difference between Seventh·day Adventists and observers of the first day
of the week. A company was presented before me under the name of
Seventh·day Adventists, who were advising that the banner, or sign, which
makes us a distinct people, should not be held out so strikingly; for they
claimed that this was not the best policy in order to secure success to
our institutions. But this is not a time to haul down our colors, to be
ashamed of our faith...." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 144.
"... I saw individuals approach the platfonn and examine the founda-
-12-
tion. Some with rejoicing inunediately stepped upon it. Others commenced
to find fault with the foundation. They wished improvements made, and
then the platform would be more perfect, and the people much happier.
Some stepped off the platform to examine it, and declared it to be laid
wrong...." -Ea1'ly Writings, p. 259.
Questions
7. What were the obstacles facing the pioneers of the third angel's
message? What was the great burden of their message?
ANSWER: "From the first our work was aggressive. Our numbers were
few, and mostly from the poorer class. Our views were almost unknown
to the world. We had no houses of worship, but few publications, and
very limited facilities for carrying forward our' work. The sheep were
scattered in the highways and byways, in cities, in towns, in forests. The
commandments of God and the faith of Jesus was our message." -Ibid.,
p.24.
8. What three steps composed the platform upon which the Seventh-
day Adventist Movement was founded?
ANSWER: ";. '.' I was shown three steps,-the first, second, and third
angel's messages. Said my accompanying 'angel, 'Woe to him who shall
move a block or stir a pin of these messages. The true understanding of
these messages is of vital importance. The destiny of souls hangs upon
the manner in which they are received.' '" God had led .them along step
by step, until He had placed them upon a solid, immovable platform... .",
-Early Writings. p. 259.
"Men and women, enlightened by the Spirit of God, and sanctified
through the truth, proclaim the three messages in their order." -Life
Sketches, ,p. 429.
9. What solemn warning was given against any weakening of the plat-
form of truth or compromising with the world? Proverbs 22: 28.
10. Why is it important for us to know well the expel'iences and teach·
ings of the pioneers? Jeremiah 6: 16.
NOTE: "We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget
the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history."'-Life
Sketches. p. 196.
-14-
"We are to be established in the faith, in the light of the truth given
us in our early experience. At that time one error after another pressed
in upon us; ministers, and doctors brought in new doctrines... ." -Gospel
Workers, p. 302.
Questions
1. Will there be any hope for those who refuse to accept the warning
of the third angel's message? Revelation 14: 10.
NOTE: "There is no work in our world so great, so sacred, and so glorious,
no work that God honors so much, as this gospel work. The message
presented at this time is the last message of mercy for a fallen world.
Those who have the privilege of hearing this message, and who persist in
refusing to heed the warning, cast away their last hope of salvation. There
will be no second probation." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 19.
2. Is there any room for doubt in the verity of the third angel's mes-
sage? Was everything understood from the beginning?
ANSWER: "The light we have received upon the third angel's message
is the true light. The mark of the beast is exactly what it has been pro-
claimed to be. Not all in regard to this matter is yet understood, nor will
it be understood until the unrolling of the scroll; but a most solemn work
is to be accomplished in our world...." -Ibid., p. 17.
3. What solemn charge is given to those who have the knowledge of
present truth? To whom does this warning apply? Isaiah 58: 1, 2.
NOTE: "The minister of God is commanded: 'Cry aloud, spare not,
lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgression,
and the house of Jacoh their sins.' The Lord says of these people, 'They
seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did right-
eousness.' Here is a people who are self-deceived, self-righteous, self-
complacent; and the minister is commanded to cry aloud and show them
their transgressions. In all ages this work has been done for God's people,
and it is needed now more than ever before." -Ibid., vol. 5, p. 299.
-4. Why was it necessary that such a stern message should be applied
to thc Advent people? What rests upon those who are commissioned
to be watchmen? Ezekiel 33: 6.
NOTE: "It isa solemn and terrible truth that many who have been zealous
in proclaiming the third angel's message are now becoming listless and
-15 --
indifferent I The line of demarcation between worldlings and many pro-
fessed Christians is almost indistinguishable. Many who once were earnest
Adventists are conforming to the world,-to its practices, its customs, its
selfishness. Instead of leading the world to render obedience to God's
law, the church is uniting more and more closely with the world in trans-
gression. Daily the church is becoming converted to the world. How many
professing Christians are slaves of mammon! Th.eir indulgence of appe-
tite, their extravagant expenditure of money for selfish gratification, greatly
dishonors God." -Ibid., vol. 8, pp. 118, 119.
5. In the proclamation of the third angel's message, what vital phase
had been missing from the general discourses given? What was the
result of this neglect in the spiritual life of the church? II Timothy
3: 5.
NOTE: "No one has said that we shall find perfection in any man's in-
vestigations; but tlns I do kn,ow, that our churches are dying for the want
of teaching on the subject of righteousness by faith in Christ, and on
kindred truths." -Gospel Workers, p. 301.
6. Who are held accountable for th~" spiritual state of the church?
II Chronicles 29: 5, 11, 15.
NOTE: "The ministers of Christ today are in the same danger. Satan is
constantly at work to divert the mind into' wrong channels, so that the
truth may lose its force upon the heart. And unless ministers and people
practice the truth and are sanctified by it, they will allow speculation
regarding questions of no vital importance to occupy the mind. This will
lead to caviling and strife; for countless points of difference will arise:"
-Goospel Workers, p. 312.
7. What has always been the greatest hindrance to i,ncreasing light
reaching the people? Luke 11: 52.
NOTE: "The rebuke of the Lord will rest upon those w:ho would bar the
way, that clearer light shall not come to the people. A great work is to
be done, and God sees that our leading men have need of more light,
that they may unite with the messengers whom He, sends to accomplish
the work tllat He designs shall be done.;.. Let no one run the risk
of interposing between the people arid the message of Heaven. This mes-
sage will go to the people; and if there were no voice among men to give
it, the very stones would cry out." -Ibid., p. 304.
8. What solemn obligation rests upon the preacher of divine truth?
Acts 20: 26, ,2.7.
NOTE: "Those whose faith and zeal are proportionate to their knowledge
of the truth, will reveal their loyalty to God by communicating the truth,
in all its saving, sanctifying power, to those with whom they associate.
Their lives of holiness and unselfish service will be in conformity with
the vital principles of the kingdom of heaven." -Testimonies, vol. 8, p.
118.
-16-
9. Why has not the ~ower of God been manifested more fully in con-
nection with the third angel's message?
ANSWER: "... We are in danger of giving the third angel's message
in so indefinite a manner that it does not impress the people. So many
other interests are brought in, that the very message which should be
proclaimed with power becomes tame and voiceless...." -Ibid., vol. 6,
p. 60.
10. What added message was designed by God to give power to the
third angel's message? Revelation 18: 1.
NOTE: "As foretold in the eighteenth chapter of .Revelation, the third
angel's message is to be proclaimed with great power by those who give
the final warning against the beast and his image....
"This is the message given by God to be sounded forth in the loud
cry of the third angel." -Ibid., vol. 8, p. 118.
Questions
1. What reference to this message was found in the 1888 edition of
The Great Controversy?
ANSWER: "Furthermore, in the eighteenth chapter of the Revelation, in
a message which is yet future, the people of God are called upon to come
out of Babylon." -Great Controversy, p. 383.
2. Under what pretext was the sentence "in a message which is yet
future" left out of the edition of 1911?
ANSWER: In an extract from a letter by Elder D. E. Robinson, dated
February 11, 1942, relative to the change, he says: "Therefore, it was felt
that it would not change the teaching of the book at all to omit this
reference to its future application, which some day would be present truth.
Therefore, it was left out, and the omission has Mrs. White's full approval."
The above statement is a very weak excuse for making such a change
in the writings of Mrs. E. G. White. The change made, they say, was
with Sister White's consent, because here is not a question of grammar, but
of changing the sense. Secondly, the suggestion came not from Sister
White, but from the leading men, who foresaw that there would be some
difficult explaining to do if the words, "yet future" remained. They had

3. Does a prophet necessarily understand the full import of all the
prophecies committed to him? I Corinthians 13: 9.
NOTE: "Even the prophets who were favored with the special illumina-
tion of the Spirit, did not fully comprehend the import of the revelations
committed to them. The meaning was to be unfolded from age to age,
as the people of God should need the instruction contained therein:'
-Great Controversy, p. 344.
4. Do those who were given the trust of proclaiming the three angels'
messages have any warrant for concluding that there was to be no
further message? Proverbs 4: 18.
NOTE: "We are to throw aside our narrow, selfish plans, remembering
that we have a work of the largest magnitude and highest importance. In
doing this work we are sounding the first, second, and third angels' mes-

from heaven who is to lighten the earth with his glory." -Testimonies, vol.
6, p. 406.
5. What solemn responsibility rested upon those intrusted with the
third angels' message? Isaiah 58: 1.

llJ1d purpose. As those who have made solemn vows to God, and who have
been ('ommission(~d as the messengers of Christ, as stewards of the mys-
teries of grace, we are under obligation to declare faithfully the whole
counsel of God." -Gospel Workers, p. 288.
6. What has been lacking in the experience of those who profess to
be giving this solemn warning? Isaiah 42: 21.
NOTE: "He will not close up the period of probation until the message

its claims must be presented in their true, sacred character, that the
people may be brought to decide for Or against the truth:' -Te5timonies,
vol. 6, p. 19.
7. What was the real cause for the spiritual downfall of the Laodicean
Church?
ANSWER: "Our churches are dying for the want of teaching on the sub-
ject of righteousness by faith in Christ, and on kindred truths." -Christ
Our Righteousness, p. 145.
8. What will be the result when this message is given free course? .
ANSWER: "... The message of Christ's righteousness is to sound from
one end of the earth to the other to prepare the way of the Lord. This
is the glory of God, which closes the work of the third angel:' -Testimonies,
vol. 6, p. 19.

9. What warning was given in 1890 in regard to the fourth angel's
message?

by those who refuse to walk in its advancing glory. The work that might
have been done, will be left undone by the rejectors of truth, because of
their unbelief." -Christ Our Righteousness, p. 67.

Questions
1. Who in the first place is responsible for the apostasy in the church?
Malachi 2: 7, 8.
2. What must be the basis of a true reform movement?
ANSWER: "The law of God is the foundation of all enduring reformation.
We are to present to the world in clear, distinct lines the need of obeying
this law. Obedience to God's law is the greatest incentive to industry,
economy, truthfulness, and just dealing between man and man." -Testi-
monies, vol. 8, p. 199.
3. What important point is not understood by many who are looking
for a reformation in the Adventist church? I Corinthians 1: 26, 27.
NOTE: "In the choice of instrumentalities for the reforming of the church,
the same divine plan is seen as in that for the planting of the church.
The heavenly Teacher passed by the great men of the earth, the titled and
wealthy, who were accustomed to receive praise and homage as leaders of
the people... ." -Great Controversy, p. 171.
4. What lesson is there for us in the experience of past reformations?
Proverbs 4: 18.
NOTE: "The work of God in the earth presents, from age to age, a striking
similarity in every great reformation or religious movement. The principles
of God's dealing with men are ever the same. The important movements
of the present have their parallel in those of the past, and the experience of
the church in fonner ages has lessons of great value for our own time."
-Ibid., p. 343.
5. What is the sacred obligation of every responsible individual? Acts
17: 11.
NOTE: "... It is not enough to have good intentions; it is not enough to
do what a man thinks is right, or what the minister tells him is right. His
soul's salvation is at stake, and he should search the Scriptures for himself.
However strong may be his convictions, however confident he may be
that the minister knows what is truth, this is not his foundation. He has
a chart pointing out every way-mark on the heavenward journey, and he
ought not to guess at anything." -Ibid., p. 598.
6. When the time comes for a prophesied work of reformation to begin,
is the Lord restricted in the choice of men to lead out? Psalm 65: 4.
7. Is it true, as some contend, that Jesus did not separate from the
-24-
Jewish church? Matthew 23: 37, 38.
NOTE: "The Sanhedrin had rejected Christ's message and was bent
upon His death; therefore Jesus departed from Jerusalem, from the priests,
the temple, the religious leaders, the people who had been instructed in the
law, and turned to another class to proclaim His message, and to gather
out those who should carry the gospel to all nations.
"As the light and life of men was rejected by the ecclesiastical authori-
ties in the days of Christ, so it has been rejected in every succeeding gen-
eration. Again and again the history of Christ's withdrawal from Judea
has been repeated. When the Reformers preached the word of God, they
had no thought of separating themselves from the established church, but
the religious leaders would not tolerate the light, and those that bore it
were forced to seek another class, who were longing for the truth. In our
day few of the professed followers of the Reformers are actuated by
their spirit. Few are listening for the voice of God, and ready to accept
truth in whatever guise it may be presented. Often those who follow in
the steps of the Reformers are forced to turn away from the churches
they love, in order to declare the plain teaching of the word of God.
And many times those who are seeking for light are by the same te'lching
obliged to leave the church of their fathers, that they may rendH obe-
dience." -Desire of Ages, p. 232.
8. What prediction was made many years ago in regard to the instru-
ments God would use in the closing work?
ANSWER: "In the last solemn work few great men will be engaged. They
are self-sufficient, independent of God, and He cannot use them. The Lord
has faithful servants, who in the shaking testing time will be disclosed
to view." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 80.
9. Did reformation end with Luther, Miller or the remnant from Phila-
delphia?
ANSWER: "The Reformation did not, as many suppose, end with Luther.
It is to be continued to the close of this world's history." -Great Contro-
versy, p. 148.
10. What popular argument did the Pharisees use in their attempt to
discredit Christ? John 17: 17-22.
NOTE: While many individuals may be enlightened in regard to some
of the urgently needed reforms for this time, there can be but one or-
ganized body with a special commission from God for such a work. This
we believe is the Reform Movement which came into being as a result of
the 1914 crisis and which has since then grown into world-wide propor-
tions. Any group who for various reasons have found themselves separate
from the Seventh-day Adventist church, since that time, should recognize
the Movement already in existence, and when convinced of the truth it
is standing for, they should unite with it. Otherwise they will be swept
-25-
away by the delusions of Satan. It is only as refonners show a united
front that they have any influence for good upon their brethren and thus
refonn humanity. Only in this way can we fulfil the prayer of Christ, in
our own experience.
