Aaron Siskind

Aaron Siskind was born December 4,1903 in New York City, New York. Aaron

is sometimes referred to as the ‘Father of Modern Photography’ as he in his own way

reinvented photography by giving it a touch that no one had given I before. In the 1940s while

on a visit to Martha’s Vineyard, Siskind began photographing at close range everyday objects

that interested him or that seemed to reflect his emotional state at the time thing like ropes,

seaweed, and footprints in the sand.

In 1966 Aaron became the recipient of John Simon Guggenheim Memorial

Foundation Fellowship for Creative Arts photography. In 1969 Aaron was named Bingham

Distinguished Professor in Humanities at the University of Louisville. In 1976 he received the

National Endowment for the arts Grant for Visual Arts in photography.

In 1950 he wrote “credo” as an artist's statement for the symposium “what is photography.” In

1959 Horizon Press published his first book ‘Aaron Siskind: Photographs.’ In 1965, George

Eastman house published his second book ‘Aaron Siskind; photographer. Aaron Siskind was

best known for his nearly abstract black and white pictures and a major influence on the

development of postwar art photography.
