Step 1:

Zone of Survey

Pre-existing structures within the zone potential influence may experience certain amount of
vertical or horizontal movement as a result of ground movement due to tunnel construction
activities. It is essential to protect such structures from being damaged. Therefore, it is particularly
important to know the potentially affected structures. Conservatively, surface buildings that are
50 m offset from the projections of the tunnel edge line can have potential influence.

Step 2:
Building Health Investigation

Following parameters shall be investigated for the structures which will be identified as potentially
affected.

 Owner details.
 The age of the building.
 The project drawings, type and depth of foundations.
 The number of storeys.
 Type of bearing structure.
 History of previous repair works and addition of extra storeys.
 If the building is inscribed in lists of historic or architectural heritage that will make it a
particularly sensitive building.
 A visual inspection of the building conditions.
 All visible parts of a building will be inspected and reported regarding utilization, observation
of cracks and verticality.
 List of defects, and photographic records.
 In assessing any building, it is usual to include an inspection of the basement and the roof, and
to include a selection of intermediate floors for a high-risk structure.
 In some instances, it will be desirable to inspect the nature and conditions of the foundations.
 Videography / photographs of existing buildings / structures / utilities
 Details of cracks in existing buildings / structures.
 Well, tubewells, pipelines, slurry lines below existing buildings.
 Three (3) copies of the detailed survey shall be submitted: one copy for Owner / Client, second
copy for contractor and third copy for PMC.
 Comments and Approval from PMC and Client.

Based on the distance of particular structure from the tunnel edge as determined in step-1 and
the parameters observed during building health investigation in step-2, overall structure safety of
the existing building shall be assessed within different levels – Good, Normal or Poor, etc. and
corresponding preventive and control measures against the damage will be adopted.
