Career Action Plan

I am interested in the field of Engineering, especially chemical engineering. I enjoy

learning about chemicals, elements, and physics. My strongest academic areas are science and
math, so I think it would be a good fit for me. I know that chemical engineering is a very broad
category for jobs, and I would have many options to choose what I like best. I would like to learn
more about the opportunities of chemical engineering so I know what specific areas of it I would
like best. Chemical engineering is a branch of engineering that used physical science and life
sciences with math and economics to produce, transform, transport, and properly use chemicals,
materials, and energy. The salary for chemical engineers range from $60,000 to $160,000 a year.

To prepare for chemical engineering I am taking both biology and chemistry on top of the
rest of my core classes my sophomore year. This will allow me to take both AP chemistry and
AP physics in my last two years of high school. Once I graduate college, I will need to become a
Certified Chemical Engineer to start working.

A possible major for me is a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. I know CMU,

Penn State, and Pitt offer this degree, but I would also like to research other schools that are out
of state. Once I graduate college, I will need to take a test to become a certified chemical
engineer to start working.

My School List Includes:

 Bucknell University, COA- 62,000, My estimated cost is around 38,000
 Rochester Institute of Technology, COA- 47,000, My estimated cost is around 30,000
 Lehigh University, COA- 58,000, My estimated cost is around 42,000
 Lafayette College, COA- 62,000, My estimated cost is around 40,000
 Penn State Behrend, COA- 33,000 , My estimated cost is around 20,000

I would like to conduct an interview with an engineer to see if I would like that field of
engineering.
I interviewed Gary O’Melia. He is a civil engineer at WEC Engineering. I learned that
civil engineers work mainly on bridges and roads. I also learned that they have to bid how much
they charge to do certain projects. Clients will choose the lowest bidder. I would not want to
become a civil engineer. I am not interested in roads or bridges, and I want to get paid based on a
salary, not how much clients are willing to bid for a project.
