Teaching is indeed a noble profession. In order to teach your students you
must know your lesson well, because you cannot teach what you do not know. In our previous lessons I have learned that to be an effective teacher you must master your lesson, provide your students an effective learning environment and have a good classroom management. But when we started our peace education class, I have realized that there are a lot of things I must know in order to be an effective teacher. At first, I thought this is a boring subject because it is a merge class and a three hours session. But time passes by that I enjoyed attending this subject because I know that I will learn something. Even though it is just a short period of time, the things I have learned in this subject are very useful in my chosen career. Peace is a form of behavior that consists of human dignity and respect for life, the rejection of violence, freedom, solidarity, justice and understanding of oneself. In this subject, we are taught the importance of peace in teaching, the good qualities a teacher must possess and how to deal with the students. “To reach peace, teach peace”- a principle that is always taught to us. Through this subject, I have learned to control my emotions especially when I got anger to my students and also to have a longer patience when they hardly understand my lesson. The idea of justice is also taught to us, the practice of fairness inside the classroom. As a future mentor, we must possess a good attitudes and characteristics so that we can be a role model to our fellowmen and to our students. I have also learned to be aware of what are the things around me especially the feelings of other person when you think of bad things about them. In this subject, I have realized that peace is not only the absence of violence or war but a totality of external and internal factor, the feeling of calmness and freedom. Peace is not only resolving problems but it also make us to be aware of the process on how to solve conflicts. We must teach our students not only the lessons but also the good attitudes that they must have. Let them realized that what they do to other people will come back to them. If they do well, then good things will come back to them. Respecting individuality is also given emphasis by our mentors. This subject helped me in my student teaching because all the things I have learned I applied it in my teaching. Teaching of peace is really important because a lot of trouble is happening inside the classroom. How can we settle the problem in our classroom if we are also suffering our own problems? We future teachers must know on how to deal with it. I have realized that many reasons behind on why students do not learn their lessons in school. It is not only because the subject is difficult to learn, sometimes they have encountered many problems that they cannot focus on their studies. The different conflicts inside the classroom must be solved as early as possible to avoid anxieties to students. We must aware of the things happening around them so that we know what to do incase of trouble. This subject Peace Education taught us on how to solve conflicts. Peace Education is a subject that is very useful, for us to be an effective teacher someday. We can use this not only inside the classroom but also in any place. As for me, it makes me a better person. I realized that each person has its individual differences so we must understand others because it’s one way to show good to them. As future teachers, we must know the different strategies to be used in teaching because we know that our students have different learning styles. Through this we can show to them that we are aware of individual differences. Judging a person or other culture without knowing them is also a conflict in our society. In school we have an acquaintance party, through this we are able to be acquainted with our schoolmates. It is one way to solve this kind of problem. As a person, we must know on how to share with others, we must learn to listen in order to understand. Be sensitive to the things around us, we must give importance or value the things we have because many people are hoping for it. In the future, if I become a teacher I will provide my students an equal opportunity wherein all of them will be given chances to participate in class. If there will be a conflict, I will solve it immediately. I will teach them the good qualities that they must possess. I will let them realize that a world with peace is worth living for. I will tell them that judging other culture is not good, look for yourself first before you judge others. I will avoid punishment because I know it will hurt the students. There are also surveys that most of the students who are misbehaving come from poor families, and some of them are maybe abuse at home. I will understand my students and know the reasons of misbehaving. The things I have learned in this subject helped me a lot to be more effective teacher in the future. SHALOM!
