GOD AND EVIL

What is God?
 God is either the sole deity in monotheism or the monist deity in polytheism. God is most often
conceived of as the supernatural creator and overseer of the universe. Theologians have
ascribed a variety of attributes to the many different conceptions of God.

Perceptions of God by the Three Major Religions

1. Hinduism
 In general Hinduism considers God not just as the Supreme All-powerful Gigantic One, Who
commands the humanity to tread the way He/ She/ It says, but also a personal God Whom
the individual can worship out of love and not necessarily out of fear! (monotheistic
Hinduism)

2. Islam
 He is the creator of the whole universe including human beings. He has absolute power in
the whole universe.

3. Christianity
 God is the eternal being that created and preserves the universe.

What is Devil?
 Generally seen as the opposing force to God; he seeks to destroy what God has built.

1. Hinduism
 Since God (Brahman) is the ultimate Being, there is no other force in the universe which can
counteract Him.

2. Islam
 Iblis, the Jinn who refused to pay homage to mankind despite Allah’s orders.

3. Christianity
 Lucifer, the anointed angel, who thought he deserved to be God himself.

The mystery is, why would God, who could hinder, defeat and destroy this great enemy, permit him to
continue in his treacherous and damnable work?

Islam
 He said, "My Lord, then respite me until the Day they are resurrected." [Allah] said, "So indeed,
you are of those who have been respited until the Day of the time well-known."[Iblis] said, "By
your might, I will surely mislead them all except, among them, your chosen servants." (38:79-83)

Christianity
 First of all, God permits such to go on in the world around us to remind us of the effects of our
sinful actions and hopefully compel us to grieve over our own sin as well as the sins of others.
 God often uses evil to bring about his work in this world as well as using it to sanctify and mature
us in the faith.
