r. Sandra Brooke earned her Ph.D. in Oceanography from
the University of Southampton’s National Oceanography
Centre, UK in 2002. Her current assignment as
Associate Research Faculty at Florida State University (FSU) has
her working with a mosaic of government agencies including; the
Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the
United States Geological Survey (USGS). Brooke’s spot on the
team that discovered a deep water coral reef 160 miles off SC’s
coast made her the perfect speaker at an event at the College of
Charleston Oct. 15, curated by CofC and the SC Small Business
Chamber of Commerce (SCBCC).

Tourism is, by far, the single biggest industry in the state, and
not something we want to risk,” said Frank Knapp, President
and CEO of the SCBCC. Knapp thinks discovery of the fragile
eco-system is another link a long chain of reasons to prohibit
offshore drilling along the east coast. Knapp had just finished his
thought when Jimmy Carroll, mayor of Isle of Palms strode in,

coral ecology and is one of the team of
scientists working on the federally funded
‘Deep Search’ project. This team is tasked
with exploration and research of sensitive
ecosystems, such as deep-sea corals,
in areas that are open to future energy
daily
activity [offshore drilling and seismic
testing] off the southeastern US [coast].
Information from ‘Deep Search’ will
help inform management of the valuable
habitats,” said Knapp before leaving
Brooke alone at the podium.
Brooke didn’t dodge the expense of
mapping the ocean floor; it’s expensive,
she confided. Surface vessels go on
months long missions, using sonar to
ping the bottom until an image suggests
the presence of coral. Identified areas
of interest are further investigated by
unmanned vehicles, photos and samples
are taken, and in some rare cases, manned
vehicles can be used.
The most interesting area at the moment
and the location of the latest discovery
is just beyond the ‘Blake Escarpment,’
explained Brooke. The continental shelf
gradually slopes away from SC shores
before dipping approximately 1,600 feet to
the Blake Plateau. The plateau itself then
slopes away to a depth of nearly 3,000 feet
to the Blake Escarpment where the depth
plummets to the sea basin. Voila; 160
miles due East is Brooke’s latest find.
Beautiful photos showing miles of multi-
colored corals made Brooke’s fascination
with the topic easy to understand, though
she lamented some of the pictures included
plastic shopping bags. “Animals in the
cnidarian classes Anthozoa and Hydrozoa
that produce either calcium carbonate
(aragonitic or calcitic) secretions resulting
in a continuous skeleton or as numerous,
usually microscopic, individual sclerites, or
that have a black, horn-like, proteinaceous
axis,” said Brooke citing Dr. Stephen
Cairns (2007). She talked about three
different “orders” of corals each with
dozens of “families” and thousands of
“species.” The dark and cold of deep-water
they live in means the corals are slow to
develop, slower to recover when disturbed,
and are affected by human activity.
Drag and trawl fishing decimate the
bottom where corals grow, and mining
activities destroy habitat and many
precious corals. Hundreds to thousands
year-old corals are harvested for jewelry
and curios, and climate change is having
a negative impact Brooke said before
adding “oil sticks to coral.” However, the
scientist stopped well short of hoisting a
picket sign and boycotting fossil fuels. The
bottom line seems to be: We’re studying
the corals because we don’t know all the
answers and that’s why ongoing study is
important, (e.g. they didn’t even know the
SC field was there until July of this year,
after all).
The Department of Natural Resources
has established some areas where fishing/
mining are discouraged, and seismic
testing does affect corals, she said,
but how, and how much has yet to be
determined. “It’s more than simple matter
of drawing lines on a map. To make a
recommendation, we have to be able to;
1. Describe the oceanographic,
geological, geochemical, and
acoustic conditions of the study
area
2. Explore and study the biological
communities of each habitat
3. Examine their sensitivity to
natural and human disturbances
and
4. Predict the distribution of sensitive
habitats in the region”

of nonprofit organizations, has
launched South Carolina’s first-
ever statewide social media collaboration
using the hashtag #yalltogetherSC to
coincide with #GivingTuesday, a global
giving movement that occurs each year
on the Tuesday following Black Friday
and Cyber Monday. The campaign was
announced earlier this month to the
organization’s members. Since registration
opened last month, nonprofits from across
the state have signed up.
“This online collaboration is all about
engagement and is open to any nonprofit or
for-profit business that wants to celebrate
the incredible work of our nonprofit
sector,” explains Madeleine McGee,
Together SC’s president. “Participating
groups will receive free social media tools,
weekly calls-to-action and free consulting
from our team if needed.”
The focus of the campaign is not on
fundraising. The program design is meant
to be paired with an organization’s overall
#GivingTuesday campaign and can be
layered with community-wide campaigns,
such as #GivingTuesdayPeeDee and
#YorkCountySCGives.
“By creating a unique hashtag we are
able to monitor the social media activity
statewide group of marketing professionals
to come up with a campaign that aims to
showcase the generosity that takes place
in the Palmetto State during this global
campaign.”
In its seventh year, #GivingTuesday
is now the largest philanthropic
collaboration in the world and focuses
on celebrating the act of giving back
within communities through social media
campaigns. #GivingTuesday kicks off the
charitable season when many focus on
their holiday and end-of-year giving.

Tempel seeks House seat 115

“I
t’s declined,” said Carol Tempel
when asked about South Carolina’s
rank in education since she last ran
for SC House seat 115. Her chagrined
response came during a “meet & greet”
held Oct. 11 at an undisclosed Kiawah
Island address. Tempel ran for the seat
in the wake of redistricting six years ago
on a platform that included improvement
to SC’s national standing. She’s running
again, more determined than ever to
address the problem, starting with how
education is funded in our state. [think ‘everything bagels’] into their own,
Act 388 was enacted in 2006 as a
tax reduction measure, paring funding
for education from owner-occupied
residences. Sales taxes, combined with
property taxes on businesses and rental
properties, have been used to fund schools
with presumably unexpected effects since
Act 388 went into effect 12 years ago.
Rural districts don’t have the same
purchasing power as their counterparts to
begin with, and urban centers have come
to recognize the roller-coaster nature of
predicting sales. “We know how uneven
and unpredictable the sales tax is. Schools
need a steady stream of funding, and need
to know [what to expect] a couple years
in advance,” said Tempel. “Charleston
endured an $18 million shortfall last
year, which resulted in the loss of 170
teachers,” begging the question of how the
Lowcountry will cope with an estimated
$40 million shortfall in the current year.
Asked what she would do in her first
100 days, the sort of question typically
reserved for the executive/governors
branch, Tempel responded quickly.
She pointed out the education funding
problem is a known quantity, and vowed
to reanimate previous efforts to remedy it,
which withered on the vine in Columbia’s
“business as usual” climate. “People want
low taxes, and they get them, but our kids
get the shaft,” said the retired educator.
Tempel grew up working in her father’s
tool & die shop. She always wanted to be
a biology teacher, but when she eventually
moved to the Lowcountry, there were
no teaching positions available. Anxious

winning efforts, she rented a table in
Charleston’s market selling spices, teas,
etc. Some spices moved better than others,
and the ones that didn’t were ‘married up’
unique package, Tempel recalled.
“There was this one guy, who always
came by and bought them [combos]. I was
doing well enough that I wanted to open
a gourmet store, … went into the bank
for a loan, and ended up on the other
side of the desk from the guy who always
bought the [combos]. Tempel got her store
front, the first of several endeavors which
speak to her business acumen, support of
small business in general, and, of course,
education.
Tempel’s years in the classroom led
to a position as the curriculum specialist
for math, science and technology in
Charleston. She subsequently established
the Science Resource Center for
Lowcountry schools. She leveraged that
success into positions as assistant principal
at Buist Academy, interim principal at
CE Williams, and principal at Academic
Magnet High School. The three schools
have set a high bar as models for the rest
of the state at a time before there was a
shortage of teachers.
“Health, jobs, all of it starts with
education. Our kids aren’t [even] getting
the jobs in our area because they aren’t
ready,” said Tempel. She wants to be
a full time legislator so she can spend
whatever time is required to be an “agent
of change,” and proudly announced
the endorsement of the South Carolina
Education Association.

ngel Oak Elementary is a Title
1 school, meaning that many
families are at or below the poverty
line. The Hootieville Holiday Shop will
give every student an opportunity to
experience the joy of shopping for gifts
for their loved ones and pets the week of
December 17. The experience of shopping
will be connected to math and writing
curriculum.
In order to provide affordable options,
donations of gently used and/or new items,
small enough for students to carry home
(household goods, neck ties, key chains,
holiday decor, pet items, toys, etc.) are
being sought. Donations can be dropped
off at The Ice Cream Boat at Bohicket
Marina. The donations are tax deductible
and donors will be given a receipt for in
kind and/or monetary donations with a
deadline date of December 1.

Deadline approaching to protect
threatened coastal birds

oastal bird populations face
multiple threats, including habitat
loss and degradation, human
disturbance, increased predation and sea
level rise, and an innovative public-private
partnership needs to raise $1.2 million
between now and Dec. 14 in order to
take advantage of a prime opportunity to
address this problem in SC.
Populations of many coastal bird species
have declined by 70 percent during the
last forty to sixty years, and the Palmetto

State is a critical link in preserving these
birds; numerous species of nesting and
migrating birds visit our coastline each
year, including a remarkable 38 percent
of all the nesting brown pelicans on the
East Coast during summer and some of
the largest colonies of skimmers and terns
in the Southeast.
To help address the growing threats
to these birds, the South Carolina
Department of Natural Resources
(SCDNR) established the South Carolina
Coastal Bird Conservation Program,
supported by groups including Audubon
South Carolina, Coastal Expeditions, the
South Carolina Coastal Conservation
League and the South Carolina Wildlife
Federation.
The program’s first project, raising
approximately $2 million needed to take
advantage of a cost-share opportunity to
renourish Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary
in Charleston Harbor, has gotten off to
a good start, with more than $340,000
raised so far, but more is needed in order
to meet the December deadline for
SCDNR’s obligation to fund their portion
of the renourishment project, with the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers providing
the rest, a little more than $2.6 million.
Crab Bank, one of five designated
seabird sanctuaries owned by the
SCDNR, has been nationally recognized
as an Audubon Important Bird Area. In
the past, Crab Bank has provided nesting
habitat for as many as 5,000 birds in a
single nesting season, including large
colonies of brown pelicans, terns, black
skimmers, egrets and herons, and a few
dozen American oystercatchers. Due to
wave erosion over the past 50 years and
Hurricane Irma in 2017, all the available
nesting habitat on Crab Bank was washed
away, removing any opportunity for
nesting birds during the 2018 season.
A long-awaited dredging project to
deepen the federal channel in Charleston
Harbor holds the key to saving Crab
Bank. Overseen by the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers, the “Post-45” Charleston
Harbor Deepening Project is expected to
reach areas of the Lower Harbor in the
early part of 2019, giving the Coastal Bird
Conservation Program until December
2018 to raise the funds needed to help
cost-share the renourishment of Crab
Bank with the dredged material from the
deepening project. As many as 80 acres
could be restored, which would provide
28 acres of upland habitat for nesting and
loafing coastal birds.
“Crab Bank, if renourished, can
produce hundreds of thousands of
young birds over the next fifty years”
said SCDNR Wildlife Biologist Felicia
Sanders.

Hibernating is not an option
F
all is here and it’s the time for many animals to
get ready to hibernate, or sleep, for the winter.
We humans don’t need to do that for survival, so
we don’t have that “luxury”, but our bodies do need to
“hibernate” for the night, or for the day if one works at
night!
Researchers do not know exactly why we need the
sleep, but they know that our bodies deteriorate in many
ways if we don’t get it. We start to get very achy and
irritable if we’re not getting enough of it. It’s one of the
biggest causes of fatigue, inability to fight off disease or
recover from a disease, inability to focus or concentrate,
for your health

poor work performance, marital problems, behavior
problems in children and underachievement in school.
Some people are misdiagnosed as a result of this and
instead of being told to get more sleep, they are put on
medication for ADD, anxiety or depression. Some end
up with domestic violence problems. This is one of the
biggest problems that I see in my psychotherapy practice.
Most health care professionals recommend seven or
eight hours for the great majority of people, but on rare
occasions, some people feel totally rested after three or
four hours.
What causes sleep problems? There are a myriad

of causes, but I believe that the main one is caffeine
consumption. Many health professionals tell their
patients that it is ok to use caffeine until 5 p.m., but I
have found that in my patients who have sleep problems
and use any caffeine during the day, even having a cup
of coffee or tea or hot chocolate early in the morning,
can affect the ability to sleep. (There are many who do
not have this caffeine sensitivity, but they do not have
sleep problems!) Caffeine is in coffee, tea, decaf, sodas,
chocolate and Excedrin.
Alcohol also disrupts sleep, even though many people
think it puts them to sleep. Actually, they “pass out”
and awake a little later and then need more alcohol to
get them back to sleep for a little while. Sleep apnea is
another cause and not only disrupts sleep, but contributes
to heart problems. It may be diagnosed with a sleep
study. Anxiety/depression also disrupts sleep and there
are several treatments for this common condition.
Pain can keep people waking throughout the night, so
adequate treatment is needed. (Pain will be discussed in
a future column). Have your thyroid checked if you are
hyperactive, this may be the cause of a sleep problem.
Leaving TV and cellphone on in the bedroom can affect
sleep- especially for children who are talking on their
cellphone all night. If a room is too light or too warm,
this too may inhibit a good night’s sleep.
Think about what may be causing your sleep problem,

Two Grand Slam champs enter Volvo field

Grand Slam and Volvo Car Open champions,
have committed to play the 2019 Volvo Car Open,
March 30 – April 7, 2019 on Daniel Island in Charleston,
South Carolina.
“Welcoming back two of our own champions is a
great way to kick off the 2019 tournament,” said Eleanor
Adams, Volvo Car Open Tournament Manager. “Both
Caroline and Sloane have had sensational seasons, and
already having two Grand Slam champions in our field
takes our competition to the next level. We know our
fans are in for a very special week in 2019!
World No. 2 Wozniacki won the Australian Open,
her first Grand Slam title, in January. The Dane also
captured the title in Eastbourne and reached the finals
in Auckland, semifinals in Doha and quarterfinals in
St. Petersburg, Istanbul and Rome this year. In total,
Wozniacki has 29 WTA career titles. She celebrated her
ninth straight season with a top 20 finish in 2017.
Wozniacki holds a 16-4 win/loss record in Charleston.
She’s found success on the Volvo Car Open’s green clay,
capturing the title in 2011 and reaching the finals in
2009. The upcoming tournament will be her sixth time
competing in Charleston.
“I’m excited to return to Charleston next year for the
tournament,” said Wozniacki. “I always enjoy playing
there and look forward to competing in front of the great
crowds again. The fans make the tournament feel so
special to me… I can really hear them and that always
fuels me to play my best!”
Stephens, the World No. 9, won the 2017 US Open
following an 11-month hiatus from tennis due to a foot
injury. She became the fifth unseeded women in the
Open Era to win a major – just 69 days after returning to
the sport and six weeks after her ranking had dropped to
No. 957 in the world.
Her remarkable comeback continued during her 2018
season, where she captured the title in Miami and made
the finals in Paris and Montreal. She recently reached the
quarterfinals in the US Open.

Stephens. “I’ve been disappointed that injuries have kept
me from competing in the Volvo Car Open the last two
years. Charleston is one of my favorite cities, and I’m
ready to finally return!”

The nine-day Volvo Car Open is the largest women’s-
only tennis tournament in North America and attracts
an average of 90,000 attendees and more than 100 of the
top singles and doubles tennis players.

by 4:00 so we left about a week ago,” he

been up front about her support for the
Trump energy plan, or the president in
general. “If somebody lies to you during
the campaign, they’ll lie to you when
they’re in office [regarding the energy
plan]. Trump isn’t on the ballot, but our
values are,” he said of his opponent’s ties
to the president.

his grandson about life. ‘A fight is going
on inside me,’ he said to the boy. ‘It is a
terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt,
resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride,
superiority, and ego.’ He continued, ‘The
other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope,
serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence,
empathy, generosity, truth, compassion,
and faith. The same fight is going on
inside you – and inside every other person,
too.’ The grandson thought about it for a
minute and then asked his grandfather,
‘Which wolf will win?’ The old Cherokee
simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’”
Having set the stage, Cunningham
began fielding individual questions.
Those waiting their turn either listened
in, or strolled past a table of brochures.
Campaign staff were only too ready to
explain Cunningham’s focus of knocking
on doors. “It’s the best way to connect
with people,” one staffer was heard to say,
followed closely by phone calls, texting,
bulk emails and the Lowcountry Brewery
tour.

Spicy Candied Walnuts

J ust in time for fall these sweet and
spicy morsels keep for weeks. Enjoy
them on a cheese plate, tossed on
green salad or even as a garnish for sweet
potatoes or pumpkin pie!
Ingredients:
1 lb whole walnuts
1 - 1 1/2 pack habanero sugar (about 1/4
cup)
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp fleur de sel
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Bring a medium pot of water
to a boil. Blanch walnuts in
boiling water for 1 minute. Drain
thoroughly.
3. In a large bowl combine sugars
and salt. Toss pecans with sugar
mixture and stir until evenly
coated. Pour mixture onto an
oiled pan or a pan lined with a
silpat.
4. Bake for 30 minutes stirring every
10 minutes until lightly browned
all over. Cool completely and store
in an airtight container.

Consolidating accounts leads to
clear financial strategy

one of us can completely control
all the things that happen to us.
Yet, when it comes to achieving
your long-term financial goals, including
a comfortable retirement, you do have a
great deal of power – as long as you follow
a clear, well-defined financial strategy.
And one way to help build and maintain
such a strategy is by consolidating your
financial accounts.
Over the course of their lives, many
people pick up a variety of financial
accounts from multiple sources. They
might have a few IRAs from different
providers, a couple of old 401(k) plans
from past employers, an insurance policy
