SECTION 10910

MISCELLANEOUS SPECIALTIES

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION

A. This section covers miscellaneous specialties as specified and indicated.

1.2 A.I.S.C. SPECIFICATIONS

A. Fabrication and erection of the ladders and cages shall be in accordance with the Specification for
the Design, Fabrication and Creation of Structural Steel for Buildings of the latest edition of the
A.I.S.C. Manual, and Section 1910.27 of the latest edition of the OSHA standards, except as
specified herein.

1.3 SHOP DRAWINGS

A. The CONTRACTOR shall submit complete shop drawings of the hatch, vents, ladders and cages
for approval to the ENGINEER.

1.4 STAINLESS STEEL, ALUMINUM, HOT DIPPED GALVANIZED

A. All ladder bolts, expansion bolts/sleeve inserts, nuts, washers and wedge anchors shall be stainless
steel Type 316. All material for ladders, ladder grating and fall prevention devices shall be per
plans. The roof handrail shall be manufactured from aluminum. The overflow pipe hood and the
roof drain downspouts, drain box and spacer plates shall be manufactured from carbon steel and
hot-dipped galvanized after fabrication unless noted otherwise on the drawings. The overflow pipe
and wall brackets shall be epoxy coated carbon steel unless noted otherwise on the drawings.
Ladder rungs shall be manufactured from solid bar stock. Aluminum shall be 6061 T6 or 6105 T5
with a minimum tensile strength of 38,000 psi and a minimum yield strength of 35,000 psi.

1.5 WELDS

A. All welds shall have full penetration and shall be 1/4” minimum unless shown otherwise on the
Drawings.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 SAF-T-CLIMB

A. All ladders shall be equipped with a “SAF T CLIMB” fall prevention device as manufactured by
the NORTH CONSUMER PRODUCTS, 2664 B Saturn Street, Brea, California 92621 (phone:
714-524-1655) or a “SURE TRACK” System as manufactured by MILLER EQUIPMENT,
Porterville, CA or approved equal.

B. The system shall include the following:


1. Required length of “SAF T NOTCH RAIL” (Type 316 stainless steel).
2. All brackets necessary for attaching the rail to the ladder (Type 316 stainless steel).
3. 48” Removable rail extension (Type 316 stainless steel).
4. Two (2) “SAF T LOCK SLEEVE” assemblies.
5. Two (2) safety belts.

2.2 VENTILATOR AND HATCH

A. Unless otherwise required on the Drawings, provide two (2) roof ventilators with expanded
aluminum bird screen and a removable cover to facilitate maintenance. The ventilators shall be
aluminum similar to MODEL GRS as manufactured by GREENHECK FAN CORP., Schofield,
Wisconsin, (phone: 715-359-6171) or approved equal.

B. Two (2) aluminum roof hatches shall be provided similar to BILCO JD-AL or approved equal and
conform to the following minimum requirements:
1. Interior ladder roof hatch (frame opening): 4’-0” x 8’-0” (JD-AL)
2. Overflow weir observation roof hatch (frame opening): 4’-0” x 4’-0” (JD-AL)
3. Flush grip handle.
4. Compression spring lifting mechanism assembly.
5. Heavy duty forged brass hinges with stainless steel pins.
6. Heavy duty automatic lock open arm with red vinyl release grip.
7. Heavy duty check chain.
8. Plate cover reinforced for 300 lb/sf liveload.
9. 1 ½” drain coupling.
10. Channel frame with anchor flange.
11. Stainless steel slamlock with brass spoon handle.
12. All steel plate, sheeting and hardware galvanized or cadmium plated except as noted above.
13. Shop finish of cover and frame: Mill finish.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 GALVANIZATION

A. When a fabricated item is called to be galvanized, it shall be galvanized in accordance with ASTM
A123 and all applicable documents listed there in. Where fabricated pieces are too large to be
galvanized as a single unit, the fabricated piece may be broken down into smaller units to be
welded or bolted together after galvanizing. The location of all added connections must be clearly
identified as such on a shop drawing submitted to the ENGINEER for approval. All welded
connections must be repaired in accordance with methods A1 or A3 of ASTM A780. Repairs of
other defects such as those caused by inadequate surface preparation, failure to remove weld slag,
rough welding, poor galvanizing practice or defects due to any other causes shall only be accepted
or approved by the ENGINEER after inspecting the item after delivered to the jobsite.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Install miscellaneous specialties as indicated and in accordance with the manufacturer’s written
instructions.

B. Provide 2 coats of SIKA PROOF (or approved equal) at a rate of 150 square feet per gallon per
coat on all aluminum surfaces in contact with concrete.

A. Where stainless steel bolts are in contact with dissimilar metals, insulating sleeves and phenolic
washers shall be incorporated to electrically isolate the bolts.
