Industrial Ethernet
ISO layer 4 and TCP/IP
Client and Server modes
Industrial Ethernet is the new name of the SIEMENS communication system, in the past
called SINEC H1. Industrial Ethernet gathers all the protocols supported by the SIEMENS
PLCs on Ethernet : i.e. ISO layer 4 and TCP/IP transport.
The Industrial Ethernet solution on applicom® is based on a transport layer which can be
ISO and/or TCP depending on the targeted coupler and Simatic® messagings depending
on the targeted PLC. All the transport layers could be used simultaneously.
! Multi-flow client mode to the Siemens PLCs in the Simatic® range messaging suppor-
ted depending on the range and the couplers :
Reading and writing variables in the various PLC memory areas (inputs, outputs, DB,
memories, etc.)
! Server mode for PLC clients in the Simatic® S5 range (Read/Write S5), Simatic® S7 (S7
messaging) and Simatic® TI-505 (CAMP messaging) : management of input, output,
and memory areas in the applicom® Data-Base and equipment monitoring.

Client mode
The applicom® client mode can be used to send several requests simultaneously to an
equipment before having received the first response : this operation is called multi-flow .
The applicom® interface manages 128 connections. Only 30 of them can be used simult-
neously for all equipments. The maximum number of connections which can be used
simultaneously for this equipment is set in the configuration for each equipment.
applicom® can read and/or write major types of data in PLC´s thanks to applicom® libra-
ry/DLL, DDE server, OPC server or ActiveX control:

Server mode
applicom® shares a database for Industrial Ethernet Clients (such as PLCs or remote appli-
com® boards) called applicom® Data-Base (size of 32Kwords which works like virtual PLC
memory to provide Siemens variable type (M, DB, A, E).
applicom® Data-Base can be accessed in read and write modes.
The applicom® server feature allows optimum data update to your application. Instead of
permanently polling devices to monitor variables, the client devices connected on the net-
work can write in applicom® Data-Base on the initiative of the PLC program. This results
in :
" PLC communication coupler less solicited
The applicom® server feature includes reliability mechanisms with client connections :
" a maximum interval time between PLC client accesses to applicom® Data-Base
(timeout) can be defined. For each conection with a client device, your application
can read (only) a status word which is located in the applicom® Data-Base words
area "ACCESS STATUS WORDS" to check the reliability of the connection.
" Your application can read (or write to reset) a counter word which is located in the
applicom® Data-Base words area "ACCESS INDICATOR WORD" to inform about the
current number of writes made by the client device in the applicom® Data-Base.
There is one status word and one counter word reserved per client. You should specify
these word´s addresses in the applicom® Data-Base using our configuration tool.
Diagnostics
The applicom® solution package includes a set of tools to test your communication
without developing any kind of application. You are usually able to run these test pro-
grams along with your application, HMI, or MMI software, allowing you to check your
data acquisition.
Each test program returns a status word and a text comment giving feedback on the
communication. It can be used to diagnose the exact cause of a failure.
