ELECTRICITY GENERATION
CAPACITY
Government is committed to improving Electricity Generation, Transmission and Supply to support
industrialization as well as ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy
services. Already Government has made commitments at all levels to improve electricity generation
and power trade among partner states.

(i) Development of power generation infrastructure is progressing well.

A total of 20.9MW was added in the power generation capacity from (Rwimi 5.5MW; Tororo 10MW;
Lubiliya 5.4MW) and by the end of the FY2018/19, Government will be adding at least 1000MW of
generation capacity from ongoing projects.
Progress on the development of the new power generation infrastructure is as follows:-

(ii) Development of Karma Hydropower project (600 MW):

Construction works are progressed with overall works on the various dam components almost
complete. Overall, 75% of the work have been completed and project completion is still targeted
during the FY2018/19. The project now procures 100% of the cement & steel products used in
construction from local manufacturers, while 87.7% of the project employees are Ugandans.
