Sheet (2) Belt Drive

Solve the following design problems, assume any missing data, and use
the tables for selecting standard V-belt dimensions (according to DIN
standard).

1- A 7.5 KW squirrel cage electric motor operating at a speed of 2000

rpm drives a centrifugal air compressor in normal service at 1000
rpm. It is desired to have a center distance around 375 mm.
Determine the proper belt type for this application, select pulleys,
and choose the number of belts.

2- It is required to select a V- belt drive to connect a 60 KW, 3000 rpm

internal combustion engine to a heavy crusher, running at
approximately 375 rpm, for a service of 18 hours per day. The center
distance should be approximately 20 in.

3- A 50 hp squirrel cage motor is to drive a jaw crusher which has 1000

mm outside diameter and 300 mm wide flat flywheel. The flywheel
is to be used as the driven sheave. Operation will be 10 hours per
day. Motor speed is 800 rpm and 200 rpm is required for jaw
crusher. There is no limitation on center distance. Recommend a
suitable V-belt drive for this application.

4- A 2 hp electric motor running at 1720 rev/min is used to drive a

blower that is to be used 15 hours daily at 240 rev/min. Select
standard V belts, and sheave sizes for this application. The motor
size limits the center distance to at least 22 in.

5- Two SPZ 2000 V belts are used in a drive composed of a 135 mm

driving sheave, rotating at 1200 rpm, and a 400 mm driven sheave.
Find the power capacity of the drive based on a service factor of
1.25 and find the center distance.

6- A single V belt is to be selected to deliver engine power to the wheel-

drive transmission of a riding tractor. A 5-hp single-cylinder engine
is used. At most, 60 percent of this power is transmitted to the belt.
The driving sheave has a diameter of 6.2 in, the driven, 12.0 in. The
center distance should be as close to a 32 in as possible. The
engine speed is governor-controlled to a maximum of 3100 rev/min.
Select a satisfactory V-belt and assess the factor of safety and the
tension forces on the belt. [neglect any centrifugal forces]
