Protect yourself
Get to grips with new password safety measures
P
assword practices often
leave a lot to be desired,
many of us reusing the same
password in multiple places.
If just one sites suffers a breach, you run
the risk of those credentials being tried
on other sites and services to gain access
to even more of your information.
So, iOS 12 does a few simple things to
encourage you to adopt better habits.
When creating an account on a website,
iOS 11 would ask if you wanted it to create
a secure password, but offered the option
of cancelling and choosing your own.
The difference in iOS 12 is subtle. The
phrasing in its dialog tells you it has gone
ahead and generated a strong password,
though it doesn’t submit it to the website
or app until you allow it. You retain the
option of rejecting it and setting your own
password, but the slight change of phrase
may encourage you to let it have its way.

Ideally, you would never share an
account’s credentials with anyone else.
You certainly wouldn’t want to enable
someone else, even your kids, to have
access to your email and payment
method for the App Store, for example.
But, some services – Netflix, say – are
built in a way that encourages sharing
one account and setting up multiple
profiles within it for family members.
Rather than using a method that risks
interception, iOS 12 enables you to share
a set of credentials over AirDrop, which
establishes an encrypted connection
directly between two Apple devices –
how to do this is described to the right.
Not keen on iOS’s built-in password
manager? Look out for updates to third-
party alternatives; developers are now
able to connect to the keyboard’s
QuickType bar and populate it with details
from them rather than iCloud Keychain.
Give passwords
a health check
Go to Settings > Passwords
& Accounts > App & Website
Passwords. If any row displays an
icon with an exclamation mark,
that password is used on at least
two sites. Tap the row, then
‘Change Password on Website’
and follow the site’s reset steps.
Share by AirDrop
In the same page, find and open
an item you want to share, then
hold a finger on its password
field, choose AirDrop and tap
the intended recipient’s device –
it’ll need to be running iOS 12
or macOS Mojave.

Keep track of battery usage

attery life is the one concern
that never goes away, so in
recognition of that Apple has
made the Settings > Battery page
more visual and interactive to help.
Additionally, it has extended the long-
term view to 10 days, which may help if
you find your phone runs low on power
on specific days as you can compare
your app activity and routine on them.
The data visualisation has two parts:
The top chart shows battery charge over
time, and the bottom one shows activity
from apps and services for each period,
and an idea of how much of it took place
while the screen was on or off.
Below the new charts is a breakdown
of apps’ energy usage, like in previous
versions of iOS. You may see a new
activity description for some apps –
Connected to Charger – giving you a
clearer idea of what you can disregard
as a cause of low power.

Save time with shortcuts

Create your own voice commands

M
achine learning already makes your
devices proactively helpful, a prime
example being the app suggestions
in Spotlight that save you searching. Your
devices work out what to show there based on
what you do and when. However, iOS 12 takes
this to the next level by suggesting much more
specific actions you can ask apps to do.
If you often call someone, request a route
and start a playlist on your way home, your
device may recognise that. You’ll start to see
shortcuts for things like these on the Lock
screen and in Spotlight, saving you having to
unlock your device and jump between apps.
You can control where shortcuts appear
under Siri Suggestions in Settings > Siri &
Search – the Lock Screen item is new in iOS 12.
Don’t want a specific app to appear? Tap it in
the list lower down; some have only a broad
Search, Suggestions & Shortcuts switch, but
others may allow you to hide them from the
Lock screen alone for privacy reasons.

Siri Shortcuts
If you use a shortcut a lot, you may decide to
turn it into a Siri Shortcut. That means you
record a phrase of your choice to say to Siri
and trigger the shortcut. See how below.

1 Find it in Settings
Start by going to Settings > Siri &
Search. At the top of this page are some

Beyond the big hitters like Screen Time, check out these invaluable enhancements
1 Check data usage
If you have a 4G iPad, it’s easy to work
out which apps use the greatest amount
of your mobile data allowance. In Settings
> Mobile Data, they are sorted in order of
usage, not by name, so you can identify
hogs without scrolling through them all.
4 Do Not Disturb timings
Hold a finger on Do Not Disturb’s
button in Control Centre – or press firmly
on it if your device has 3D Touch – to turn
it on for an hour, till evening, till you leave
your location, or tap Schedule for a
different period of time.

2 Search by lyrics
Enter a snippet of lyrics in Music’s
Search tab. No Apple Music subscription
is needed to search its lyrics library, and
you can be fairly inexact. So, ‘Looks like
a limb torn off’ finds ‘It’s looking like a
limb torn off’ in a Band of Horses song.
5 Get help with words
You’ll find new British and American
thesauri options in Settings > General >
Dictionary. Highlight a word and choose
Look Up to use them. Translation
dictionaries between English and Arabic,
Hindi, and Hebrew are also new.
3 Podcasts playback
Scroll down in Settings > Podcasts to
find new settings for what happens when
you tap the skip buttons during playback.
You can choose from 10, 15, 30, 45 and
60-second jumps, and forwards and
backwards can be set differently.
6 Scan QR codes
If Camera remembers its mode
(Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings),
you may have to swipe to Photo mode to
scan QR codes. Add Scan QR Code in
Settings > Control Centre; this button
opens Camera to that mode instantly.

If sharing is caring, then iOS
cares a lot. It has lots of ways
to share your stuff with other
people and your other devices.
It all starts with the Share sheet, which pops
up whenever you tap the Share icon, or the
word Share on some devices.
The sheet is context-sensitive, which
means the available options change depending
on what app you’re using, and it’s full of useful
tools. For example, in Safari it doesn’t just
enable you to share web pages, but also
enables you to save a page as a PDF or
request the desktop version of a mobile site.
As you’ll discover, you can share by email,
messaging apps, wirelessly to another Apple
device, and further afield using cloud storage
services such as Dropbox.
In this tutorial we show you how to share
files, photographs and web pages. If you want
to share downloaded apps and purchases from
the iTunes and App Stores, you can do that
with Family Sharing – there’s a guide to this at

HOW TO Share from (almost) any app >

1 Share what you see

You can share from any app that
displays the Share icon, which is the box
with a vertical arrow pointing upwards –
it’s on the far right of Safari’s toolbar in
the above screenshot. Tap it to see the
share options available to you.
2 Decide what to do
Swipe on the middle and bottom
rows to see even more options. For
example, we can share this recipe from
Safari to Facebook, save it to iBooks, or
post a link on Twitter. You’ll also see the
option to create a PDF.
3 Rearrange the options
Scroll to the far right of a row and
tap More to show or hide items, and to
reorder them so the most used are listed
first. If you don’t send web pages to
Reminders you might turn off that option,
but bear in mind that affects other apps.

HOW TO Share with groups of people >

1 Find your people

You can use iCloud Drive to share files
with multiple people. To do that, open the
Files app, select a file – in this example
we’re using a PDF – and tap the Share
icon. You should now see Add People
among the options in the bottom row.
2 Select the service
Now you need to choose how you
want to send your sharing invitation. Mail
and Messages are the most likely options,
but you can also send it using third-party
apps, such as Facebook’s Messenger, if
you have one installed.
3 Set the options
Tap Share Options to specify
whether the link that’s generated will
work for anybody or just the specific
people you’ve invited, and whether
others can make changes to your
document or if it should be read-only.

HOW TO Share photos and folders >

1 Select your photos

In Photos, select some pictures, then
open the Share sheet. The top row shows
nearby Apple devices. If none are listed,
check the recipient is set to receive from
contacts or everyone (in Control Centre),
and has Personal Hotspot turned off.
2 Send the photos
To share using AirDrop, tap the
device’s icon in the top row. Here we’ve
shared with our iMac. A blue progress
line goes around the icon while sending,
then changes to “Sent” as confirmation.
Other people have to accept receipt.
3 Use external apps
iCloud can share individual files, but
it can’t do it for whole folders. If you want
to do that you’ll need to install the app
for a third-party service such as Dropbox,
which integrates with iOS’s Files app for
easy access from the sidebar.

Share your work

Collaborate with others in the iWork apps
The iWork apps for iOS can share documents for easy collaboration. After you
create a document in Pages, Numbers or Keynote, tap the ellipsis and choose
Collaborate With Others to share a link with people – they’ll need an Apple ID.
The link takes them to the doc in iCloud.com, where they can edit or comment
on it. Any changes they make are applied to your original copy, which means
that everybody has the most up-to-date version of the document. You can also
specify who can do what to your file, and whether or not it’s shared publicly.

1 Pick a design
Create your document as usual,
choosing a template from the Book
section (or a blank template if you
prefer). Landscape works best for image-
heavy books, or books that include a lot
of media such as video.
2 Replace text
and images
If you’ve gone for one of Apple’s
templates it’ll already have headlines,
text boxes and perhaps images too. Just
replace the text and images with the
actual content that you want to use.
3 Add your video
To add your video, tap on the Plus
icon at the top right. You can choose
Photo or Video, which goes to your
Photos library, or Insert From, which
takes you to Files and iCloud Drive as
shown here.

4 Move it around
Video works like any other object in
a Pages document: to resize it, simply
grab the dots at the edges or corners and
drag them to size. To reposition the
video, you can simply drag it to the
appropriate place.
7 Play it in place
You don’t need to exit Pages to see
how your video will work in your ebook:
just tap on the play icon in the middle of
the video clip and it’ll start playing right
away, so that you can make sure it’s
working fine.
10 Move the button
Your audio now appears as a Play
icon, which you can move around the
page. We’d recommend adding a text
label but make sure the text box area
doesn’t cover the icon, or the icon won’t
respond to taps.

5 Fix the layout
Video normally sits above
everything, but we want our text to wrap
round it. Tap the Format icon (the
paintbrush) and then on Arrange. In
addition to text wrapping, you can add
a margin around the video.
8 Do a voiceover
Adding audio couldn’t be simpler. To
add your voice, tap the plus icon and then
choose Record Audio. You’ll now see a
panel appear at the bottom of the screen
with an icon to start and stop recording.

11 Publish your book
Tap on the three-dot icon at the top
right of the screen and choose the Export
option. For ebooks, the format you want
is ePub – it’s a standard that works on
almost all devices. Choose it and provide
your book title and author information.
6 Add more options
If you tap on the Movie tab, you’ll
see a couple of movie-specific options
that enable you to repeat the video, so
you can play it on a repeating loop, or
even loop it backwards and forwards if
you wish.
9 Trim your clip
Pages enables you to trim the
beginning and end of your clip, which is
handy if, like us, you tend to mess up
beginnings. Tap Edit to begin; when
you’re happy, tap Insert at the top right
of the screen.

Open your ebook in Books to see
if everything works the way it should in
the final version. Here we’re testing our
video clip to make sure it plays correctly.
For big projects, it’s a very good idea to
test as you go along.

presets to customise them to your needs.
Transitions are also easy to add thanks
to a collection of drag-and-drop presets.
Transitions do a variety of jobs. The most
common transition is the classic cross dissolve
(or mix), which has been around since the
earliest days of cinema. It blends the end of
one clip into the beginning of the next, and is
often used to indicate the passing of time, or a
link between the two visuals. Dissolves can
also be used to flow a series of clips together
into a seamless montage sequence.
You can use wipe transitions to creatively
flow from one shot to the next. A horizontal or
vertical wipe can indicate a change of location.
The Star Wars movies famously use wipes to
jump from one part of the galaxy to another.
We’ll show you how to use wipes in a creative
way so that the direction and speed of the
wipe complements movement in the scene.
To add a mix or wipe a few decades ago,
you needed to optically process the film, which
meant transitions were expensive to produce.
As a result, transitions appear sparingly in
older productions. In these digital days,
transitions are easy to add, which can lead you
to go over the top. Think ‘less is more’ when

HOW TO Customise titles and transitions
1 Add a default transition
To add a transition, place the playhead
between two clips on the timeline. Tap
the Add Clip + icon in the panel at the
right of the timeline. Tap on Transition in
the Add Clip window. A purple transition
bar will appear between the two clips.
4 Add a fade
If you drop a transition between two
clips, it will cross fade between them. By
dragging a Cross Dissolve transition to
the start of the timeline, you can create a
fade in from black. Pit a transition at the
end of the timeline to fade out to black.
7 Modify text properties
The components of the title preset
appear as layers. You can tap the eye
icon to toggle layers on and off. Tap a
layer to edit its properties. Here we
tapped a text layer, then the Face Color
box. We chose blue to echo the sky.

2 Change duration
Pinch the timeline to zoom in so that
you can see the transition’s label. By
default the transition will be a Cross
Dissolve with a duration of 1.00 second.
Drag either end of the transition’s trim
handles to extend its duration.
5 Add overlay title
Park the playhead where you want a
title to appear. Tap the timeline’s Add Clip
+ icon. In the Add Clip panel tap Overlay
Title. By default, a plain white title
appears. Double tap on the title bar in the
timeline to summon the Title Editor.
8 Change shape
Tap on Shape to edit its properties.
We’ve replaced the preset’s rectangle
with an oval. We’ve dragged the shape’s
control handles to make the oval wider,
and changed its colour by tapping the
Face Color box.
3 Change transition type
Tap on a transition in the timeline.
Tap the Suitcase icon and then tap
Presets. Browse down to the collection of
wipes. The pier’s wooden post is moving
to the right in our clip, so we choose a
WipeRight transition to match it.
6 Pick a title preset
To quickly create a more interesting
title, scroll through the thumbnail
presets. Tap a preset to see how it looks
in the viewer. Here we’ve tapped on
B&W-Main. This preset consists of a
rectangular shape and two text boxes.
9 Edit text content
To customise the text, double-tap on
it in the viewer. A text box appears at the
top right. Type in some custom text for
your title. You can add a Cross Dissolve
transition to the text clip in the timeline
to make it fade in and out.

radios are strong enough. They noticeably can’t muster
the same reach into the street or garden as Netgear’s
more expensive Orbi system, for example, but coverage
over the inside of a house is great.

boiler control needs to be installed by a professional. You
can control it with the touchscreen, or schedule things
(and use geofencing) with the app. It’s not as feature-
