This document outlines a laboratory exercise to test the tensile strength of deformed reinforcement bars through tension and bend tests according to ASTM A370. The exercise involves preparing rebar samples, gripping them in a universal testing machine to apply tensile loads until failure, and recording the data. It also includes bending a separate sample to check for cracks and examine the physical condition of the reinforcement bars. The goal is to determine if the reinforcement bars meet specifications for use in concrete and their ultimate strength under tensile and bending forces.

LABORATORY EXERCISE NO. 11:
TENSION TEST OF DEFORMED REINFORCEMENT BAR (ASTM A370) I. INTRODUCTION Steel reinforcing bar or rebar is embedded in concrete to improve the overall strength of the concrete that surrounds it. Material products standard exist to help ensure that rebar produced throughout the world exhibits the same physical, chemical and mechanical properties regardless of the source. Proper mechanical testing is the necessary for determining if the rebar meets its published specification, ensuring the quality of the product. SCOPE OF TEST 1. Tensile test is one of the most common tests for steel. The test involves straining a sample piece by tensile force, generally to fracture, for the purpose of determining tensile strength, yield strength and reduction of area. OBJECTIVE 1. To determine the suitability of reinforcing steel bar for concrete reinforcement by performance of tensile test. 2. To determine the ultimate strength of the reinforcing steel bars when subjected bending load. 3. To examine reinforcing steel bar physical conditions.
II. APPARATUS AND SUPPLIES
1. Testing machine- A Universal Testing Machine shall be used to test the tensile stress and bending stress of the material. III. PREPARATION OF SAMPLES AND TEST SPECIMENS IV. V. PROCEDURE A. TENSION TEST 1. Before testing, measure the length and diameter of the sample and sample is cut into half. One for tensile test and one for the bend test. 2. Then the sample is grip in the jaws of the Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Ensure that the sample is held in such a way that the force is applied as axially as possible. 3. Apply load by prescribed rate of stressing. 4. Continue applying load until the specimen breaks. 5. Then record the data on the test machine. B. BEND TEST 1. Prepare the reinforcing steel bar. Determine the length of the specimen. 2. Place the reinforcing steel bar to the Universal Testing Machine. 3. Perform the bend test using the test machine. Wait until the flexure bending punch push down the steel bar. 4. Examine the bent specimen and check for cracks, whether it has cracks or none. VI. DATA AND TABULATION VII. CALCULATIONS
