To what extent has religion had a positive impact on society?

An overview of one of the discussions

Religion is undoubtedly still eminently important and of major significance in today’s society,
but most of the time this consequential and momentous role in unquestioned, the authority
of the church beyond dispute. Although this might not seem worrisome at first glance, it is
indeed quite concerning and should be questioned further, which this debate, held by Mia
and Clara definitely encouraged.
The controversial topic concerning the question whether religion has had a positive impact
on society was thoroughly debated by evaluating both sides of the argument in the style of
an educated colloquy.
On the one hand many religions rely on commendable principles, like the teaching of
altruism, which provides a moral framework and brings otherwise disparate people
together, building supportive communities. While giving many people something to believe
in, it provides a meaning for life, while simultaneously also answering and explaining
existential questions. In many third world countries, where science has not yet arrived,
religion gives a satisfying response to these issues. Furthermore, many churches provide
resources, community and mentorship, which are relevant educational supplements.
But while religion promotes its traditional values and provides people with a pattern of
‘good’ behaviour, one should not neglect the other side of the argument and take into
consideration the negative impacts.
Throughout human history, to put it blatant, religion has been the bane of civilisation, and
looking at its vestiges today the question arises if a world without it would be preferable.
The negative impacts, however subliminal they might seem, are of substantial importance in
today’s society. It is for example proven that religious people tend to be more racist and less
favourable with respect to working women. Religion, and more precisely Christianity, builds
upon the pivotal idea of creating and catalysing fear. It is based on the notion of sin and
condemnation to eternal suffering, generating resentment towards oneself. Moreover,
religion is often used as an expansionist tool, creating an excuse for war and conflict.
The overall impact on society is positive, taking into account the fact that even nowadays
religion impacts our moral code, what is seen as morally acceptable in society, and
consequently shapes our laws are largely based on the religious values of past generations, it
thus has brought about stability even up to this day.
