1. Lesson Plan Information

Subject/Course: Music Name: Lorelei Junkel
Grade Level: Kindergarten- 3rd Date: 11/4/18 Time: 12:35-1:50
Topic: Emotions Length of Period: 1.5 hours

2. Expectation(s)
Expectation(s): I expect the children will be able to tell the difference between happy and sad music. They can
distinguish how music can make them feel. Then I expect them to know how to use music as a tool to complement
their emotions.

Learning Skills (Where applicable):

3. Content
What do I want the learners to know and/or be able to do?
I want learners to be able to use music as a coping mechanism for what ever emotion they are feeling. I want the
learners to know that music can make you feel different ways. I expect the students to be able to use age
appropriate class vocabulary. They should be able to use terms like tempo and dynamics to help explain why that
music makes them feel a certain way.

Today learners will:

Today we will start by talking about different emotions and explaining situations where you would feel all of these
different emotions. Then we will play different excepts of music and ask the students to color a picture that goes
with how that emotion makes them feel. Then we will have them discuss with the person next to them how they felt,
and then as a full class discussion. We will then talk about how we can use music when we are feeling happy or
feeling sad.

4. Assessment (collect data) / Evaluation (interpret data)

(Recording Devices (where applicable): anecdotal record, checklist, rating scale, rubric)
Based on the application, how will I know students have learned what I intended?
I will walk around while students discuss with the people next to them and gauge if students are getting the idea or
not. Emotions are pretty subjective, so I do not think there is a right or wrong. There is just a common answer. I will
also evaluate during the large class discussion if the students understand the topic. Also, if students use age
appropriate class vocabulary. Are they able to explain themselves using music terms?

5. Learning Context
A. The Learners
(i) What prior experiences, knowledge and skills do the learners bring with them to this learning
experience?
Children know how to feel. Hopefully they have had pasted discussions about emotions and how certain activities
make you feel. They the skills to listen to music and color a picture. Students should bring previous music terms and
knowledge into the classroom.

(ii) How will I differentiate the instruction (content, process and/or product) to ensure the inclusion of all
learners? (Must include where applicable accommodations and/or modifications for learners identified as
exceptional.) I will verbally explain the assignment as well as the class discussion. This applies to auditory
learners. Students will be able to see my example of how music makes me feel through my example drawing. We

will also make a list on the board during the discussion. That way visual learners can see the information in front of
them. Then for kinesthetic learners, they get to draw and move with the music. They are putting their emotions into
movement for the coloring.

B. Learning Environment
The environment is a semi lit class room if possible or fully lit class room.

C. Resources/Materials
The lesson requires a way to listen to different music examples: speakers, cell phone or computers, CD player etc.
It also requires paper and coloring utensils, I suggest crayons or colored pencils. Also requires chalk board, white
board, or smart boards. Or a way to write for the class to all read.

6. Teaching/Learning Strategies

INTRODUCTION
How will I engage the learners? (e.g., motivational strategy, hook, activation of learners’ prior knowledge,
activities, procedures, compelling problem)
I will engage the learners by playing Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Then I will ask them to describe the song they
just heard. I expect them to say lines along scary or sad. Then we will go into talking about different emotions and
how music can help you express emotions.

MIDDLE:
Teaching: How does the lesson develop?
How we teach new concepts, processes (e.g., gradual release of responsibility - modeled, shared, and
guided instruction).
This lesson will develop by passing out coloring supplies and playing short clips of different songs. I will play
“Celebration” by Kool and the Gang. I will play “Imperial March from Star Wars”. I will play “Spring” by Vivaldi. I will
play “In the Hall of the Mountain King” By Grieg. I will play “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” from Lilo and Stitch. And
finally, for the older classes I would play a challenging song. “I’m Here” from The Color Purple. Thar song has
complex emotions and could have different interpretations. If there is enough time at the end of class, we will talk
about how music really puts the emotions in movies. But that would be at the end.

Consolidation and/or Recapitulation Process: How will I bring all the important ideas from the learning
experiences together for/with the students? How will I check for understanding?
After each example we will turn to the people around us and talk about what we heard. Then we will come together
as a class and talk about what emotion we felt with each song. We will also talk about what musical concept lead us
to feel this way. If the children are not sure what t say, I will guide their questions by asking did that music make you
want to dance? Was the music something you would see in a sad movie? Based on the children’s responses I will
make a judgement on if I need to explain it another way.

Application: What will learners do to demonstrate their learning? (Moving from guided, scaffolded practice,
and gradual release of responsibility.)
At the end I will have the older classes come up with a list of song for each emotion. When they are happy, sad,
mad, or scared. What is music they will listen to. Then they will write a list and turn it into me.

CONCLUSION: How will I conclude the lesson?

I will sum up the lesson by telling the kids the importance of sharing their emotions with their adults. We will talk
about how they can listen to music to go with how they are feeling or listen to music to change how they are feeling.
Then as they are dismissed, play a happy uplifting song.
