Classic Hollywood Editing (Editing and Montage)
The Hollywood style of editing is what is considered the classical style, when films were first being
made this was just simple cuts, eventually becoming varied pacing cutting wise and more diverse
camera techniques. Pioneers of this movement include directors such as; Alfred Hitchcock, Orson
About Me Blog Archive
Welles and DW Griffith. They introduced various new editing and filming techniques which are a direct
influence on all filmmaking since.  ►  2016 (3)

In the Classical Hollywood cinema, narrative would be well written, although it was always ▼  2015
constructed in a similar way, like in most books, it starts with the building blocks involving us getting to (62)
know the scenery and characters, followed by a first turning point and then a second turning point and ►
then a comprehensive ending which would leave no questions unanswered. The films were also often JOE Dece
written purely for entertainment, they were rarely politically charged so that they could bring in a large WINSTONE mber

audience instead of putting certain members of the public off for a political motivation in the film.
These films were often shot in studios with big Hollywood production companies behind them and the Follow 2 ►
studios would often get most of the credit. Eventually, directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Orson June
View my (3)
Welles would make people start to consider Directors as artists and craftsmen, rather than someone
complete
in charge of the filming. Other areas of the filmmaking process were being given credit such as the profile ►  May
editors, they were getting more varied work after certain filmmakers brought in crosscutting (3)
techniques where the filmmaker could cut back and forth between two subjects both parallel with
each other in time to show what was happening to both in a shorter amount of time.  ►

The 180 Degree Rule
  ►
The 180 degree rule is basically a rule that filmmakers follow to avoid confusing the viewer about Marc
what is happening. Imagine two people facing one another having a conversation, they are both h (2)
talking and you want to get a shot of each of them when they are talking. If you draw a line going ►
straight through the two people, the 180 degree rule is basically that if a camera is getting a shot from Febr
one side of this line, you cannot get a separate shot from the other side, this would mean that the uary
characters would be switching sides of the screen and would confuse the audience as to where the (2)
characters are standing. Instead you stick to one side and you can go anywhere on that side but not ▼
over to the other side unless the camera itself moves to that other side so the audience will Janu
understand why the subjects have changed sides.  ary

The 30 Degree Rule a
  l
This is a basic rule which needs to be followed in filmmaking. If you are shooting a single subject and u
you want to get two shots of the subject from two separate angles, you cannot have the second shot a
moving barely any distance at all from the first shot because when you cut between the two it will just t
i
look accidental and doesn't really give any shot variation for the scene so the rule is that the other
o
shot needs to be at least 30 degrees around the subject from the last shot because this will actually n
make a noticeable difference and draw some attention to the editing. (

The Establishing Shot h
  (
In the classic Hollywood style of editing, it is common practice to use an establishing shot. If you are D
starting a new scene, there needs to be an establishing shot at the beginning which will show the o
entire location used, this way, the audience cannot be disorientated when you cut to different shots for c
u
the film, they will be used to the environment they're seeing and they will be able to establish what's
m
going on where based on the original shot. e
  n
Shot Reverse Shot t
  a
Shot reverse shot is one of the most well known and heavily used techniques in editing, it is basically r
two separate shots of two subjects in a conversation or facing each other and the editor cuts back y
and forth between the two at particular points, if it is in a conversation, it makes it much easier to f
o
concentrate on the subject's emotions and the conversation itself rather than look back and forth
r
between the two like you're in the crowd at a tennis match. P
