Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson is universally designed in that it is offered as both Powerpoint and MP3 file, making it easily
accessible to students outside of the classroom on various platforms. One of the major benefits of creating an
MP3 is that students can rewind or fast forward as many times as they need, allowing them to gain a deeper
understanding Should students have the opportunity to view this lesson during class, noise-cancelling
headphones can be provided upon request to ensure that the student can focus without distractions.
Lesson idea implementation:
Before taking a field trip to the local zoo, students will learn about various types of animals and draw
similarities to adult animals and their offspring. The lesson will be introduced by calling on individual students
and asking them to name an animal. The teacher will write down their responses and begin the video. The
teacher will help students with the identification of each animal and compare the offspring to the adult while
allowing children time to think for themselves before answering. This lesson should take about 10 to 12
minutes.

Student learning will be assessed formally by taking anecdotal notes, being sure to note which students are
comfortable with the identification of animals and identifying differences between offspring and adult.
Learning can be extended by asking students to compare their physical appearance to that of one of parents,
family members, or friends. The lesson will be concluded by creating a simple Venn diagram that focuses on 1
similarity and 2 differences between an animal and its offspring. Student feedback will be provided in small
groups to give students more individualized attention.

Reflective Practice: This activity can impact learning in that the students are able to utilize this source for
free, frequently, and in their own time. In regards to technology, this lesson can be extended by allowing the
creating a podcast or audio file to reach beyond the 4 walls of the classroom. Audio, similar to video files, are

great because students can generally access them on various platforms and rewind as many times as needed.
Even more captivating, students could make a connection to the arts and draw the differences between an
adult animal and its offspring; the student can later post their work on a classroom blog.
