Light versus Dark /l/
Two days in Dallas
Activity type: Discussion
Level: Intermediate
Purpose: Students practice using light
vs dark /l/ sound in speaking and
listening. They work together to figure
out their itinerary.
Set-up: Pairs or small groups
Time: 10 minutes to prepare/ 20
minutes to do the activity
Materials Preparation:
1. Make one copy of the Student’s
Page for each pair or group
2. Be sure each pair or group has a pen
or pencil.
Procedure
1. As a warm-up, ask students if they
have ever taken a trip to Dallas
landmarks, or if they know any
Dallas tourist attractions.
2. Have students get in pairs or small
groups. Give each pair or group a
copy of the Student’s Page.
3. Explain to students that they are
going to spend the weekend in Dallas
and visit some landmarks given in
the worksheet.

4. Have students underline words with
the sound /l/.
5. Read the words and have students
repeat after each word. Have them
pay attention to light vs. dark /l/
6. Tell students that they will make an
itinerary for a two-day trip in Dallas
and discuss what time they should do
the given activities.
7. Tell students that each pair/ group
will have one writer who will take
note the discussion and fill in the
worksheet.
8. Assign a role (writer) in each pair/
group or let them choose.
9. To model the activity, have two
students volunteer to play Student A
and Student B. Ask them to read the
example dialog in the Student’s
Page. Then draw student’s attention
to the chart, and point out that the
first activity has been filled in; time
and other activities should be
finished in any order. Encourage
students to add more activities.
10. Instruct students to do the activity.
Give them ten minutes, then call
time.
Follow-up
Ask volunteers to share their itineraries
with the class.

Write the time and activities in the chart. You may add other activities as needed.
