GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
a. All questions are compulsory.
b. There are 27 questions in total. Questions 1 to 5 carry 1 mark each .Questions 6 to 12carry 2 marks
each. Questions 13 to 24 carry 3 marks each and questions 25 to 27 carry 5 marks each.
c. There is no overall choice but internal choice has been provided in all the three questions of 5
marks. You have to attempt only one choice from such questions.

SECTION A
1. Name the wave used for radars.

5. Write two characteristics of a material used for making permanent magnets.

SECTION B
6. Can terminal potential difference across the cell be greater than the emf of cell? Explain.

7. A plane with a wing span of 40m flies with a constant speed of 1080km/h in eastward direction at a
constant altitude where vertical component of earth’s magnetic field is 1.75 x 10 -5T. Find the emf developed
at the tips of the wings.

(b) How are magnitudes of the electric and magnetic fields related to the velocity of the em wave?

11. What do you mean by self-induction? Derive a relation for the self-inductance of a current carrying
solenoid.

12. (a) Write the conditions for total internal reflection to occur.

( b) Define critical angle and derive the relation between refractive index and critical angle for a given pair
of media.

13. Light of wavelength 2500A0 falls on a metal surface of work function 3.5eV. What is the K.E. of the (i)
fastest and(ii) slowest electron emitted from the surfaceIf same light falls on another surface of work
function 5.5eV, what will be energy of the emitted electrons?

14. What is Displacement Current? Conduction and displacement currents are individually discontinuous
but their sum is continuous. Comment.

Identify the following electromagnetic radiations as per the frequencies given below. Write one application
of each.

(a) 1020 Hz (b) 109 Hz (c) 1011 Hz

15. A Polaroid is kept between two crossed Polaroid’s. For what angle between the first Polaroid and the
second Polaroid the intensity of light through third Polaroid be maximum?

16. (a) Write two differences between interference and diffraction.

(b) Sodium light of 600nm is used to study diffraction at a single slit of aperture 0.2mm.The distance
between slit and the screen is 1.5 m. Find the linear width of central maxima.

17. State the working of ac generator with the help of a labeled diagram and deduce the expression for the
alternating emf generated in a coil of N turns each of area A rotated with angular velocity ω.

18. The value of ground state energy of hydrogen atom is -13.6eV.

(a) What does this negative sign signify? (b) How much energy is required to take an electron from ground
state of this atom to i) first excited state?

19. (a) How is wave theory not able to explain photoelectric effect? Explain.

(b) Write two properties of photon.


20.Three identical capacitors C1, C2 and C 3 of capacitance 6 mF each are connected to a 12 V battery as shown.

22. (a) Define activity of a radioactive substance. Prove that R = λ N.

(b) The mass number of two elements is in the ratio of 1:27. What is the ratio of their nuclear density?

23. Two small identical electrical dipoles AB and CD, each of dipole moment ‘p’ are kept at an angle of 120° as
shown in the figure. What is the resultant dipole moment of this combination? If thissystem is subjected to electric
field (E) directed along + X direction, what will be the magnitude and direction of the torque acting on this?

(c) Which material is used for potentiometer wire and why?

(a) State with the help of a circuit diagram, the working principle of a meter bridge. Obtain the expression
for determining the unknown resistance.

(b) What happens when the galvanometer and cell are interchanged at the balance point if the bridge?

26.(a) Derive an expression for the force per unit length experienced by the two infinitely long straight
parallel wires, carrying currents in the same direction.

(b) Use the above to define one ampere.

OR

(a) Derive an expression for the magnetic dipole moment of an electron orbiting around the central nucleus.

( b)( i) Which magnetic substance has negative value of susceptibility?


(ii) What is the value of relative permeability for a diamagnetic substance?

(iii) Draw the variation of susceptibility of a diamagnetic substance with temperature.

27. (a) Draw ray diagram showing the image formation by a compound microscope. Hence write the
expression for the magnification for the total magnification when the image is formed at least distance of
distinct vision. How can you increase its magnifying power?

(b) A telescope has objective and eye-lens of focal length 15m and 1cm respectively. Calculate its angular
magnification.

OR

(a) State Huygen’s principle. Use it to prove Snell’s law.

(b) When a monochromatic light goes from rarer medium to denser medium, explain the following giving
reasons:

(i) Is the frequency of reflected light and refracted light same as that of incident light?

(ii) Does the decrease in speed imply reduction in the energy carried by the wave?
