Power
Protection
Surges and spikes from nearby lightning strikes,
arc-welders and high voltage cables can destroy or
disrupt unprotected electronic equipment. These
destructive forces enter mains power circuits
within buildings by a variety of methods. The
primary route is where power, often ‘dirty’ and
spike-laden, actually enters the building and it is at
this point that surges should be stopped in order to
prevent them from propagating further. However,
surges and RFI can also corrupt power supplies
from within the building. By providing protection at
the main power distribution board and then at each
piece of equipment, mains borne surges and spikes
are eliminated before they can cause damage.

ZoneMaster PLUS is the first protection system that can be specified and
configured to meet the exact requirements of any facility. Although models
are available with 150kA, 250kA, 300kA, 450kA and 600kA ratings, this
range can easily be upgraded on site should additional surge handling
capability be required (e.g. ZoneMaster Plus 150 can easily be upgraded
to a 450 or even 600 if necessary). Optional filter modules and surge
counters are available for this range and Silicon Avalanche Diode technology
modules are also available offering exceptionally low limiting voltages.
The ZoneMaster Series is available in units with either a 300, 250 or
150kA surge handling capability. ZoneMaster is engineered to protect the
most critical electronic systems, suppressing surges at the main service
panel. This patented range of devices has the advantage of remote
monitoring capabilities and full module diagnostic indication.

The ZoneSentinel range is engineered for application at distribution boards and
small service locations and provides cost effective, high capacity surge protection
to 90kA per phase. When used at a local panel in combination with a ZoneMaster
at the service entrance, ZoneSentinel provides the ultimate in surge protection.
The ZoneSentinel offers ten mode protection and, like the ZoneMaster Series,
has remote indication capabilities.

The ZoneDefender range has been specifically engineered for interior
lighting and small distribution panels. The ZoneDefender has a maximum
surge current capacity per phase of 70kA and ten mode protection.
Solid state diagnostics are a feature of this unit, as is remote indication.

The MA3000 Series DIN rail mounting devices are suitable for use on all sizes
of distribution board and offer either 40 or 65kA levels of protection (MA3040
and MA3065 units respectively). Optional features available for this range are
dual networking, ensuring continuity of protection, and status monitoring for up
to 15 units via a separate monitoring block. Alternatively, each module can be
individually monitored remotely via volt-free contacts.

The 20kA rated, MA2000 Series, fitted close to the entry point of power
supply to a building, forms a first line defence limiting surges to the normal
withstand voltages of electrical equipment. The MA2001 single phase units are
available in 110V and 240V versions while the MA2003 three phase devices
are supplied as 208 and 415V options. Where surge protection and filtering is
required, the MA2001/F in 120 and 240V versions offers all the features
of the MA2000 Series combined with up to 20 amps of RFI filtered output.

Added thermal fuse protection
The MA100 Series ac power system surge protectors prevent surges
and transient overvoltages from damaging electronic systems such as
instrumentation control panels, telemetry outstations and fire and security
alarm installations. These 20kA protection devices are available in single
phase (MA101) and three phase (MA103) versions and are supplied in a
range of voltage options. An optional, IP65 rated weatherproof enclosure
is available for this range should it be necessary.

MA05, MA10, MA15 & MA30

Combines high quality filtering with ‘ring’ suppression
Three package types - DIN rail, wall/floor mounting and filter case

EMC compliance, exceeding IEC 61000-4-5, level 4
MA05, MA10, MA15 and MA30 EMC/surge protection devices can be
incorporated into, or mounted close to, individual items of electrical equipment,
providing immediate local protection against surges and electrical noise.
Available with either a 5, 10, 15 or 30 amp operating current, 110 or 240V
working voltage and with 3 package types, this is a truly versatile range. These
unique units combine RFI filtering and ring suppression therefore aiding
compliance with EMC directives. DIN rail mounting MA15 units, suitable for AC
or DC application, are UL Recognised Components. Versions of the 18kA rated
MA15’s are available with optional status indication. MA05 and MA10 units are
6.5kA rated.

SD150X & SD275X

Range of mounting kits and enclosures available
The SD Series is a range of ultra-slim, space-saving devices of which the
SD150X and SD275X versions have been specifically designed for high
current applications. These units are suitable for AC supplied equipment
such as PLCs or I/O systems. The SD150X is the recommended choice
for systems on 110-120V AC whereas for 220-240V AC systems the
SD275X is ideal. Installation is easy and automatic earthing is achieved
through simple DIN rail mounting. A range of mounting kits, enclosures and
accessories are available for the SD Series should they be required.

SD Series surge protection devices combine unparalleled packing
densities, application versatility, proven reliable hybrid circuitry and

In addition to the many beneficial features offered by SDX devices, the SD
variants fuse/disconnect package provides both fused protection against fault
currents and a convenient method of isolating field circuitry from protected
circuitry without needing additional disconnect terminals. Commissioning and
maintenance can therefore be easily carried out without removal of the surge
protection device. Also provided is a third connection on the field and safe
side of the protector in order to terminate screens safely to earth.

High speed data links between buildings or one part of a plant to
another have become more common with the widespread use of smart
transmitters and the increase in unmanned installations.
The SDR Series has been specially designed to meet the requirements
for high speed data links with an extremely high bandwidth.
SDR units are available in a range of voltage variants enabling a wide
range of communication systems to be protected e.g. RS232, RS422,
RS485, Bus powered systems etc. These devices are classed as simple
apparatus and can therefore be used in hazardous areas without
affecting the certification of the circuit.

Vibration sensors and 4-20mA loop process control systems invariably require
three wire connections, when powered from an external source. Protection
may be accomplished in one ultra-slim unit by using the SD32T3 three terminal
surge protection device. Because the SD32T3 protects all three conductors
within the same unit, higher protection is achieved, as the SPD hybrid circuitry
is common to all three wires.

The specially designed SDRTD device for Resistance Temperature
Detectors provides full 3 wire protection in a single compact unit, whilst
maintaining high measurement accuracy. Like all SD Series devices the
SDRTD is easily mounted onto DIN rail, an action that automatically
provides the essential high integrity earth connection.
A range of mounting kits, enclosures and accessories suitable for all SD
Series devices, including the SDRTD, are available should they be required.

The recommended choice for the protection of 3 wire pressure transducers
on low power circuits is the SDR3 range, designed specifically for this purpose.

The SLP Series provides application versatility, proven reliable hybrid
circuitry and simple installation - features which make the series
an ideal surge protection solution for process equipment, systems I/O
and communications networks. The SLP units are suitable for general
process I/O applications and are available in a range of voltage ratings.
Where small size and higher currents are required or loop resistance is
critical, the SLP units are ideal.

MTL375 & 377 Series

The MTL375 & 377 Series is a range of mechanically identical but electrically
varied surge protection devices which protect instruments in almost all
possible applications. MTL377 versions should be used for most applications
and are BASEEFA approved so can be applied in intrinsically safe circuits.
MTL375 units are unique - a solid-state switch enables them to protect against
prolonged surges. Like MTL377 devices, MTL375 units are available in a range
of voltage ratings and have a maximum surge handling capability of 10kA.
Mounting kits and enclosures are available for these busbar mounting devices
to simplify the earthing and installation process.

ZoneBarrier Series

ZoneBarrier modular data and signal protection devices provide a uniquely
customer configurable port-by-port protection approach. ZoneBarrier modules
can be utilised as either stand-alone devices or as building blocks to create an
unlimited multi-port protection system. Modules are available for data and
signal applications including units suitable for 4-20mA loops.
ZoneBarrier devices can be wall mounted, DIN rail mounted or mounted on any
flat surface in a 19” rack. Other ZoneBarrier modules are available for network
and comms applications, further details of which are given in the Network &
Comms Protection section of this brochure.

Transmitter Protection

TP48 Series
Easy and direct mounting – simply screws into spare conduit entry
Intrinsically safe and flameproof (explosion proof) approved versions
Range of thread types available
The TP48 surge protection device safeguards field-mounted process
transmitters where it matters, right at the unit. After a simple
installation (the TP48 screws into an unused conduit entry, with
no additional modification), it provides high-level protection against
surges and transients whilst normal operation remains unaffected.
The TP48 resets itself automatically after each operation.
The TP48 is available with screw threads to suit different transmitters,
with explosion proof and intrinsically safe options for hazardous areas.
Working voltage is 48V dc maximum with impulse ratings of 10kA peak
current and 10kV peak voltage. The TP48 is FM approved.

TP48/3 and TP48/4

Same excellent protection as provided by the TP48
Three and 4 wire versions
The TP48/3 and TP48/4 products are available with different threads to
meet a range of transmitters requiring 3 and 4 wire connections.

HW48
Honeywell tested and approved for use with STT350 transmitters
Customised mounting for simple installation and wiring
Analogue and smart meter compatible
Retrofittable – easily fitted to existing installations
The HW48 device safeguards Honeywell STT350 intelligent transmitters
against surges and transients from field cabling. This Honeywell tested and
approved unit fits onto the side of the STT350 transmitter inside the standard
‘flameproof’ (Ex d) enclosure housing) giving a 10kA level of protection.
Installation and earthing is simple so even existing installation can easily be
upgraded by retrofitting the HW48.
Analogue and Smart local current meters can be wired into the transmitter
and will benefit from protection provided by the HW48.

The fieldbus system, by the very nature of the
environment in which it will be placed, is at risk from
surges across the fieldbus system. Because the
fieldbus system is controlling and handling the data
transactions across a common trunk, the
importance of safeguarding the integrity of the
fieldbus system is paramount in order that the
shutdown of multiple processes does not occur.

The TP32 is specifically designed to protect process transmitters and devices on
Fieldbus systems. The TP32 is a hybrid design consisting of high-power, solid state
electronics and a gas discharge tube which is capable of diverting surges up to
10kA. For hazardous-area use, approvals for both intrinsically safe and flameproof
(explosion proof) operation are available.

FP32 devices provide surge protection along the trunk or spurs of fieldbus
systems from damaging the associated electronics such as terminators, spur
blocks, and the bus control equipment. Fully automatic, the FP32 reacts
immediately to ensure that equipment is never exposed to damaging surges
by directing surges safely to earth and then resets automatically. Its small
footprint also allows the FP32 to be located near terminators and spur
blocks.

MA4000 Series

Although designed specifically with bussed systems in mind, the MA4000
Series is available in a range of voltage options (24Vdc, 48Vdc, 110Vac, and
230Vac) making it universally suitable for protecting power supplies in hostile
environments. These 20kA rated, single phase devices provide protection for AC
and DC power supplies with no restriction to the amount of load current. Self-
certified to ATEX 94/9/EC for mounting into Zone 2, Category 3G hazardous
areas, the MA4000 is especially useful for protecting the next generation of
Hazardous Area mounted control systems.
MA15 Series
Protects panel loads up to 15 Amps in series, unlimited Amps
in parallel

The MA15 was designed to protect electronic equipment and computer networks

The DP200 BT & RJ Series provides robust, 10kA, plug in protection
for fax, modem, telemetry and other telecom applications.
Units are available with either a BT or RJ11 style plug and socket,
DP200/BT and DP200/RJ respectively. Where RFI filtering is required
in addition to surge protection the DP200/BT/RFI and DP200/RJ/RFI
can be supplied. These devices suppress interference due to medium
wave radio transmissions, and other sources, which can compromise
normal telecom operation.

TS Series protection devices provide full 10 pair surge protection in
a single compact unit. Public switched telephone networks (PSTN)
are served by the TS10-P, while the TS10-I is ideal for ISDN
(both base and primary rate) and private wire application.
TS units plug easily into standard disconnection or switching module
strips. Earthing is via a hardwired connection to the MDF terminal,
eliminating the need to use unreliable slide on tab connections to the frame.

The ultra-slim, SDPSTN, has, as the name suggests, been specifically
developed for the protection of signals transmitted on public switched
telephone networks (PSTNs). The SDPSTN provides protection for
telecom/modem type applications including telemetry outstations.
Installation is easy, one simple manual operation clamps the SDPSTN
securely on to DIN rail, an action that also provides the essential
high-integrity earth connection.
A range of mounting kits, enclosures and accessories is available for
the SDPSTN, if required.

mSA Series telecom protection devices provide protection for private wire
installation (mSA units) or public switched telephone networks (mSAPN
devices). mSA units are available in a variety of working voltages and in either
single or dual pair versions, allowing application versatility. mSAPN devices are
available in single or dual pair variants. These self-contained units are housed
in an IP65 enclosure fitted with cable glands and an external earth stud, so
installation is simple. Connections for the mSA units are via screw-clamp
terminals, whilst the mSAPN units are supplied with IDC-type terminals
for convenience.

The DIN rail mounting DP DIN Series provides 10kA surge handling
capability for telecom applications. Private wire applications can be

approximate working voltage. Public switched telecom networks (PSTNs)
are served by the DP200/D. DP DIN Series units are fully auto-resetting

ZoneGuardian is a fully configurable Series available in
3 x ac mains/power outlet plug in, 3 x ac mains/power outlet strip
and 7 x ac mains/power strip outlet versions.
The 3 x outlet plug in device plugs directly into a wall socket while
the 3 and 7 outlet strips plug into the wall socket via a power lead.
The ZoneGuardian Series provides exceptional mains
protection and when coupled with CPP (communication port
protection) modules this robust device also protects your telecom,
LAN, data and/or coax applications. The snap-in feature allows
for the easy addition or change of data lines, simply snap-in a new
CPP module as required. CPP telecom modules are available with
RJ11, RJ48S, RJ48C and terminal strip connector types.
Network protection CPP modules are supplied with terminal strip,

The ProShield Series provides the ultimate configurable protection
platform through the unique patented design of seven high
performance AC mains/power outlets (US style) plus three easy
slide-in data protection bays. UP 7000 ProShield models provide
ultimate protection for PC, servers, networks, peripherals, intranet
applications and communications equipment and has a massive
>50kA surge handling capability. AP 7000 versions, designed for
home use, handle maximum surge currents greater than 27kA
on home PCs, fax machines, home entertainment equipment,
digital TVs, VCRs, DVDs, cable modems and digital satellite sys-
tems. Versions of UP 7000 and AP 7000 are available with
additional built-in RJ11 fax/modem protection (UP 7000 TEL and
AP 7000 TEL).
Communication modules simply slide-in to the ProShield protection
bays and any combination can be installed in the ProShield at any time
providing complete upgradeable protection for all sensitive electronic
equipment. Communication protection modules are available for telephone
lines, networks, cable/digital satellite, Lease Line, RS232, 4-wire dial-up and
DDS applications. These modules utilise solid state, auto-resetting Silicon Avalanche
Diodes and earth automatically upon insertion into ProShield.
Additional features of the ProShield range include a recessed on/off switch, large
enough for easy access, power fault indication (the light indicates correct wiring
when lit) and protection status indication (when lit, this light assures that the device
is protecting). Since all seven ac mains/power outlets are located on one side of
the device, ProShield also acts as a superior cable management facility.

CA Series devices are wideband, high current devices for the protection of
radio transmitters and receivers connected to coaxial feeders. They protect
vulnerable equipment without affecting normal operation, passing high
frequency signals with little attenuation while diverting surge currents safely
to earth and clamping output voltages to safe levels.
A wide range of connector styles is available to suit all application requirements
with a choice of working voltage and characteristic impedance provided for
most of the series. Connector styles include BNC, N-type, TNC, UHF and F-type.
In addition, bulkhead mounting options are available where insertion into a
panel is preferable. Typical applications for the CA Series include the protection
of radio telemetry systems, mobile communications base stations and where

device. Replaceable gas discharge tube devices are available for applications
requiring DC continuity. These devices come in a wide range of turn-on voltages
from 90V to 1000V. Finally, a unique combination product is available for users

The LC30 surge protection device protects load cell and weighing
system installations from possible malfunctions, or damage to
individual strain-gauge bridges of associated electronic instrumentation
etc., caused by severe overvoltages or impulse currents on signal cabling.
Fully solid state, the LC30 clamps incoming surges immediately without
causing undue leakage losses under normal conditions.
Once the surge has passed, the device automatically resets to the
passive state, allowing normal operations to continue.
The advanced protection concept used in the LC30 also eliminates
the expensive additional earthing systems specified by other suppliers
so field installation is very simple indeed.
The LC30 device is non-voltage producing, non-energy storing ‘simple
apparatus’ and as such, can be used in hazardous areas with appropriate
self generated system documentation.
The LC30 is also certified for use in legal metrology applications.

Comprehensive CCTV Surge Protection

These modules can be purchased individually for DIN rail or surface

mounting. For specific applications, the modules can easily be configured
in sets, for example a three-module set may be required for an outdoor
camera (Video, PTZ and 24V AC power). Each module provides high, 10kA
minimum, levels of protection as well as very low insertion loss to main-
tain excellent video quality.
Surge damage to CCTV surveillance systems and video equipment is not
always obvious and may reduce the reliability of the installation and lead
to costly system downtime. Monitoring stations are particularly at risk
as they may be linked to a large number of cameras, any of which may
introduce surge current from nearby lightning strikes. Fitting reliable
surge protection is therefore vital, can you afford to take the risk?

The MTL Group is distinguished by its ability to offer complete solutions to
a wide range of user problems. Although perhaps best known for intrinsic
safety barriers and isolators, the group has, in recent years, expanded
into other areas of process control interfacing. A summary of the group’s
products, other than surge protection, is given below.

Intrinsic Safety Barriers and Isolators

MTL’s compact and inexpensive shunt-diode IS barriers for protecting
circuits in hazardous areas are mounted and earthed in one operation,
giving safe installation and the highest reliability. MTL Isolators, an
alternative to barriers, need no high-integrity earth and can provide signal
amplification and relay options, while their hazardous and safe area
isolation, simplifies installation and avoids earth-loop problems.

Process I/O - MTL8000 Series

MTL has conceived and developed an entirely new generation of I/O
modules. The world’s first genuine field-mounted Process I/O, MTL8000
does away with the need for conventional wiring. It links to the control
system on a single line through a high-speed fieldbus, and can be used
effectively in both IS and safe-area, general purpose I/O applications.
With a choice of two systems - Modular and Block - MTL’s Process I/O is
both scalable and cost effective for small nodes and large, high density
applications.

TransPort™ and MTL I/O95™ Distributed I/O Systems

MTL Inc’s distributed I/O systems provide flexibility and cost savings by
installing modules close to the process being measured. Modules are
intelligent and rugged, mount on DIN rail and communicate with the host
computer over twin-pair cable, simplifying field wiring and marshalling and
providing resilience to system faults. The transport system is designed
for use with many bus-based systems including PC, VME and PLC’s.

Non-IS Isolators
In India, MTL Instruments Ltd’s non-IS signal isolators, temperature
transmitters and converters use galvanic isolation to prevent earthing
problems between field sensors and control instrumentation. Sold
worldwide, the compact DIN rail mounting units are designed for ease of
installation and use.

System Design and Integration

A number of MTL companies specialise in system design and
development. Their corporate disciplines include: design, development
and building of systems which enable vendors and end-users of
distributed control systems to integrate them with field instruments;
integration of MTL and OEM products into safety and control systems,
