The cabinet assembly kit (part number 098-106311-002) includes the
materials necessary for installing the outdoor cabinet-mounted radio.
Lift cabinet into 1 Make sure mounting brackets are attached to the outdoor
position cabinet (see Figure 2-1).

[f] Wrap wires onto terminals. Refer to the EW- and FWL-
drawings for internal Modem Interface assembly
wiring and for wire-wrap instructions.
!
In outdoor installations, bare copper wire wrapped onto Modem
Interface assembly terminals must be soldered to the terminals
after wire wrapping to: (1) prevent signal degradation during
transmission, (2) to prevent noise generation, and (3) to prevent
the development of a lossy interface.

In the following step, make sure the appropriate PAD/EQL
cards are installed in both directions of transmission for each
radio. Leaving the system with no transmit or receive PAD/EQL
opens the line input or output.

Adjustments and Tuning No adjustments are normally required during initial alignment;
touch-up tuning should not be attempted unless required after
changing a critical component in the signal path. Only the
adjustments called out in the procedures should be made; all other
controls have been preset at the factory and should not require
adjustment in service. If a major adjustment appears necessary, check
the measuring technique and test equipment setting before performing
the adjustment procedure.
!
Do not make any adjustments if the measurements fall within
the given tolerances.

measurements during initial testing at the factory (see Factory Test
Data sheets located in the Sales Order specific binder), will indicate
any degradation in the performance of the system. The TROUBLE
ISOLATION section provides steps for correcting problems.
These measurements should be made at least once a year:
1. DC voltage outputs of the Power Supply units.
2. Local Oscillator frequency (FCC-required test).
3. Transmitter Output Power (FCC-required test).

from a local oscillator via a power divider. The downconverter mixes
the two signal together to produce a 135-MHz IF signal. [The
135-MHz IF signal results from a 135-MHz frequency offset between
the local oscillator output at the near site and the 10-GHz receive
signal from the far site.] The IF signal then feeds to a 2nd
converter/IF amplifier. This circuit works with a 156.4-MHz
oscillator to produce a 21.4-MHz IF signal. The 21.4-MHz IF signal
then feeds to a demodulator. The demodulator recovers the original
data signal and passes the signal to the Modem Interface assembly.

Radio/Modem OVERVIEW
Assembly
The Radio/Modem assembly includes the IF circuitry and the RF
circuitry. The units which provide the circuitry are housed in one
chassis (Radio/Modem assembly). The Radio/Modem assembly fits
into the Radio/Modem Interconnect assembly (see mechanical
description in Section 1).
IF Circuitry The IF circuitry consists of a Modem card which plugs into an edge
connector located at the rear of the Radio/Modem assembly. The
Modem card includes the modulator and demodulator circuits.
PDM Issue: 05v3
RF Circuitry The RF circuitry is split into to paths (transmit and receive), however,
there are units common to both paths.
The transmit path consists of an Upconverter, a Transmitter Power
Amplifier, and a transmit RF Filter.
The receive path consists of a Downconverter, a Low-Noise
Amplifier, a 2nd Converter/IF Amplifier, and a receive RF Filter.
The units common to both paths are a Local Oscillator and a Power
Divider.
Distribution Board The Radio/Modem assembly also includes a Distribution board which

Transmit Direction A data signal feeds to a Bipolar Data Interface daughterboard on the
Circuit Description Modem card. This board converts the bipolar, return-to-zero (RZ)
data signals in to TTL signals (data and clock) for the Modem.
Depending upon the strap option, the Bipolar Interface daughterboard
then removes one of the following suppression coding schemes from
the data signal:

In Options -001, -003, and -009 of the Modem card, the signals
feed to a Dejitterizer daughterboard. This board removes timing
jitter from the data signal. When the board is not equipped (in
other Modem card options), two straps are provided on the
Modem card to maintain data and clock path continuity.

integrator from the ALC potentiometer. Thus, the ALC pot sets the
transmit output level.
Receive Direction A suppressed 21.4-MHz IF carrier signal from the 2nd converter/IF
Circuit Description amplifier enters the demodulator portion of the Modem. The signal
splits into two paths and then feeds to two separate mixers. In the
mixer, the signals are mixed with two outputs of a voltage-controlled
oscillator (VCO) to produce two baseband outputs, I and Q. The I and
Q outputs of the demodulator feed to a decoder gate array which

assumption that the correct value is only one level away. The Error
Correction circuit then multiplexes the data from the I and Q channels
back into a serial data stream.
The recombined and retimed I and Q data streams, from the Error
Correction circuit, feeds to the descrambler circuit. The descrambler
removes the scrambling that was performed in the modulator. This
signal then goes to the Bipolar Data Interface daughterboard.
BER-controlled data stream output from the descrambler and
recovered clock from the Error Correction circuit, feed into line
transmitter circuits in the Bipolar Data Interface daughterboard.
The line transmitter circuits comprise line encoder logic in the digital
line transcoder IC, a dual-positive-OR driver and a line transformer.

BER alarm mode occurs when bit error rate exceeds one per
thousand. In the BER alarm mode, the line transmit is timed by the
crystal-controlled internal clock and drives the line with a string of
1’s; this maintains synchronization in other radios along the path and
serves to indicate that the alarmed radio can no longer recover
reliable data.

Circuit Description The 10-GHz Local Oscillator’s RF card produces a 10-GHz RF signal
from a reference crystal oscillator. This signal feeds to the unit output
and to the PLL/ALM card. On the PLL/ALM card, the signal feeds to
a phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit. This circuit monitors the signal to
ensure it remains at the set (reference) frequency. When the signal
drifts out of phase, the PLL circuit generates a DC voltage
proportional to the phase difference between the reference signal and
the actual signal. This voltage then feeds to the RF board to correct
the phase of the RF signal and maintain phase lock.
The 10-GHz RF signal from the Local Oscillator feeds to a Power
Divider. This unit splits the signal into two equal signals which feed
to the unit output.

Circuit Description The 135-MHz IF signal enters the unit and feeds through a pin diode
attenuator to a wideband hybrid amplifier. The amplified IF signal
then feeds to one input of a mixer. A crystal-controlled local
oscillator, typically 156.4MHz, feeds the second input of the mixer. In
the mixer, the signals are combined to produce a 21.4 MHz IF signal.
This signal feeds through a band pass filter, two pin diode attenuators,
and three stages of IF amplification. The amplified IF signal then
feeds to the unit output.
AGC Circuit. The AGC circuit includes an AGC integrator, three pin
diode attenuators, and a buffer. The AGC integrator receives an I
PDM Status: Released
detector voltage signal from the Modem and compares this signal
with a reference signal. The reference signal is equal to the correct
AGC voltage level. If there is a difference between the two signals,
the integrator sends a signal to the pin diode attenuators. The pin
diode attenuators adjust the gain of the amplifiers so that the correct
AGC voltage is obtained. Also, when the AGC voltage is not correct,
the AGC integrator sends a RCV AGC VOLTS signal through a
buffer to the unit output.
