Quiz Bee and Spelling Bee

Objectives:
 To help students improve their spelling, enrich their vocabularies, learn concepts, and
develop proper English usage.
 To challenge the participant’s and expand their knowledge and understanding about facts
and information about English.
Mechanics:
1. All participants will be seated on the venue in an order predetermined by random drawing
of names. The list of names will be provided to the participants and audience at the Bee.
Each speller will be a given a number to stick on the upper-left corner of their ¼
illustration board.
2. The bee will consist of 3 rounds (clincher will be added, if needed), together with their
specified score and time limit:
3. Easy and Average Round – Multiple choice
Difficult- Identification/Enumeration
4. Questions and choices/ words will be read twice only.

For Quiz Bee


Easy (15 items) 1 point 10 seconds
Average ( 10 items) 3 points 5 seconds
Difficult (5 items) 5 points 10 seconds
Clincher 10 points 10 seconds

For Spelling Bee


Easy (10 items) 1 point 10 seconds
Average ( 10 items) 3 points 5 seconds
Difficult (5 items) 5 points 10 seconds

5. The contestant with the highest score will be declared as the winner.
Story Telling Contest
Objectives:
 To enhance students’ confidence in using the English language.
 To give students the opportunity to use the language in an interesting, authentic, and a
creative manner.
 To enhance and improve in listening and speaking skills.
 To instill students’ interest in reading and writing in English.

Rules and Mechanics:


1. Each Grade 7 participant will be given a copy of the story to be delivered ahead of time.
2. Time limit is 5 minutes upon the ‘Go’ signal of the time keeper.
3. No sound effects, background, or props are allowed to support the story.
4. The story must be delivered from memory and any movement is confined onstage.
5. Judges’ decision is final.

Debate
Objectives:
 To help students develop decisive awareness, take position, and defend the position
against all objections and focus on that position or view with total decisive awareness that
cannot be shaken.

Rules and Mechanics:


1. Each Grade 10 debating team is composed of three speakers and shall select a team
captain.
2. The team captains shall represent their respective team in draw lots, determining which
side of the proposition they shall represent, etc.
3. The ‘Modified Oxford-Oregon Type’ of debate (5-3-5) will be used.
4. The teams shall be given time to discuss their presentation and argumentation. Pre-debate
conferences administered by organizers shall be done at least a day before the
competition.
5. The speakers will alternatively present their arguments with the first speaker of the
affirmative side speaking first, and somebody from the affirmative side (Rebuttal
Speaker) also speaking last.
6. The first speakers should tackle about the practicability aspect of the proposition, the
second speakers, the necessity, and the third speakers, the beneficially.
7. Rebuttal speeches are for case re-building and final words. Though counter-arguments
are permitted in rebuttal, no new evidence or proof is allowed.
8. Delivery time for each speaker shall be:
i) Constructive Speech 5 mins/speaker
ii) Interpolation 3 mins/ speaker
iii) Rebuttal 5 mins/speaker
 Anybody from the team could do the Rebuttal

Speech Choir Contest
Rules and Mechanics:
1. One (1) group per English teacher.
2. Each teacher needs to register their students to their Coordinators.
3. Each grade level will have their elimination on the opposite session that will be led by the
Master Teachers and Coordinators.
Grade 7- November 19, 2018 (1:00 p.m)
Grade 8- November 19, 2018 (10:00 a.m)
Grade 9- November 20, 2018 (10:00 a.m)
Grade 10- November 20, 2018 (1:00 p.m)

4. Each grade level needs to organize their elimination.


5. There shall be one (1) contest piece. The contest piece shall be given before the contest.
6. The number of contestants shall not be less than 15 members. Maximum is 25
participants.
7. Costumes and props are not allowed.
8. The criteria for judging are as follows.

Interpretation (25%)

Mastery of Piece (15%)
English Hat
Objectives:
 Our language is the words and phrases we use to communicate with each other. Every
language may have tens of thousands of words, if not hundreds of thousands. The more
words that you know out of your language, the more eloquently you will be able to
communicate or share your ideas to people.
Guidelines:
1. Students will wear a hat with a quote from any literary pieces discussed with its author’s
picture and short biography..
2. Students must wear this hat before they enter and after they leave the school premises.
3. The students are strictly required to wear the hat on the opening for the celebration of the
English Month as they enter the school premises.
4. It must be creatively and well-presented by utilizing limited materials and as much as
possible, avoid unnecessary expenses.
5. Students must use recyclable materials.
6. Teachers and other people are in-charge on monitoring everyone who disobeys the rule.
7. Teachers must provide a short briefing about the essence of using this hat. It reflects also
the lesson that they have learned in a particular lesson or text.
8. Teachers will grade the hat with the criteria for judging as follows:
Creativity (40%)
 Innovative use of materials and resources.
 Craftsmanship in the creation of the hat.

 Uniqueness

 Made of recyclable materials
Poster Making Contest
Objectives:
 Showcase the artistic ability and talent of BHNHS students in poster making, while
promoting about how dynamic English as a language.
Mechanics:
1. There shall be 1 representative for each English teacher.
2. The poster shall interpret and revolve around the English Month’s theme.
3. Materials to be used shall be provided by the participants themselves.
4. The following are the art materials allowed to be used:
o Coloring materials (Oil pastels, crayons, and marker).
o 1/4 illustration board
o Use of other materials not specified above is strictly prohibited unless it is
permitted to use by the one who’s in charge on the room where the contest will
be taken.
5. The entries must be done on the spot and must be completed within the allotted time of 2
hours.
6. The decision of the Board of Judges shall be final and irrevocable.

The criteria for judging are as follow:

Essay Writing Contest
Objectives:
 An essay does more than inform or persuade a reader. The process of writing an
essay teaches a student how to research a topic and organize her thoughts into an
introduction, a body and a conclusion. Essay writing objectives apply to expository
and persuasive essays on a variety of topics.
Rules & Mechanics:
1. Each Grade 8 English teacher will only select 1 representative to join the Essay Writing
Contest.
2. Participants will be given a topic, related to the English Month’s theme.
3. All essays must be original. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited.
4. The essay must be written in English and contains a minimum of 300 words and must not
exceed 600 words. It should also have at least three (3) paragraphs.
5. The participants shall be given one (1) hour to finish their entry.

Declamation
Objectives:
 Enhance public speaking skills and sparking healthy positive competition, and develop
understanding of socio-economic, cultural and political issues among the students.
Rules & Mechanics:
1. One (1) representative per Grade 8 English teacher.
2. The declamation piece shall focus on the theme given by the administrators.
3. Delivery should last for 2-5 minutes only.
4. Props, visual effects, make-up, or costume can be used to enhance the performance.

Extemporaneous Speaking
Objectives:
 To help students learn to speak confidently in a variety of situations.
Rules & Mechanics:
1. One (1) representative per Grade 9 English teacher.
2. Participants will be able to draw lots in order to select a certain topic.
3. Delivery should last for 2-5 minutes only.
4. Contestants will draw a topic from the box and will be expected to begin speaking to that
topic from the allotted time. (Maximum of 1 minute to think)
5. Hand signals will be provided after four and a half minutes (4 1/2) signifies that the
contestant has thirty (30) seconds more to finish his speech. After five (5) minutes have
elapsed, hand signal will also be provided to indicate that he may end his speech.
6. The time limit will be strictly implemented.
