Administration

Br, R. T. Unsworth, in his third year as principal of BRHS and fourth on the staff of the school, received his B.A. from lona College and M.A. from La Universidad lnteramericana in Mexico City. He has done graduate work at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles and at St. Xavier's College in Chicago. From New Rochelle, New York, he enjoys reading in his spare time.

Rr. x, B. Huener, who returns for his fourth year at Rice as Dean of Students, received both his B.A. and M.A. from Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles. He has done other work at Notre Dame. University of Detroit, and the University of San Francisco. In u-ldition to his duties as dean, he also teaches English 4.

Br. John D. Donnellev, returning to Rice this year after 8 years on the faculty, is Dean of Freshmen and Athletic Moderator. He was graduated from Iona College with a B.A. in English, and worked toward an M.A. in English from De Paul and an MS. in Math from Notre Dame. He teaches Math 3 and Scholarship Review. He beads both the National Honors Society at Rice and BRAT. A graduate nf Leo H .S., he enjoys golf and skiing in his spare time.

Mr. H. P. Cassidy, a 13-year memo bel' of the faculty. is in his second year as assistant principal. He holds a B.S. from St. Mary's College and a Master's in Business Administration from De Paul. He also teaches Religion 4,

Br. R. D. May moved up to assistant principal this year, his thirteenth on the faculty of Brother Rice. A graduate of Iona College, he received his M.Ed. from De Paul. He teaches Developmental Reading to the freshmen.

Mr. R. C. Osburn, an eight year member of the faculty, head of the business department, as well as school treasurer, received a B.S. in Accounting from St. Joseph's College. He teaches accounting, and in his spare time enjoys golf.

Mrs. Margaret Duzan is in her second year at Rice as secretary. She graduated from Calumet High School in Chicago, anrl, in her spare time, enjoys knitting, ice skating, and bowling.

Mrs. Dorothy J. Hoff is in her fourth year as secretary at Brother Rice. She is registrar and secretary to the principal. She is a resident of Chicago and graduate of Calumet High School.

Rev. James Parappally is resident chaplain at Brother Rice, and an associate priest at St. Linus parish in Oak Lawn. He received his L.S. Sc. from the Pontifical Gregorian University at Rome, and M.Ed. from De Paul University in Chicago, where he is now a doctoral candidate. Father James is studying the American school system in preparation for his return to the archdiocesan system in his native country of India.

Mrs. Frances Doerrer is in her third year at Rice as secretary. A graduate of Calumet High School, she also attended the Chicago College of Commerce. In her free time she enjoys travel, skating, bowling, and music.

Br. F. C. Shannon is director of Guidance and Counseling Department, as well as Director of the Brother Rice Players and Moderator of the BRHS Mother's Club. He received his B.A. from Iona College and M.A. from Fordham University, and has done post-graduate study at De Paul, St. Xavier's, and the Canon Law Institute.

Guidance

brocki, in his

fifth year at

BRHS, is a freshman and senior guidance counselor. In addition, he teaches English 3 and coordinates the North C e n t r a I high school evaluation at Rice. He received a B.A. while attending St. Mary's College and an M.Ed. from De Paul University.

Mr. R. M. Hanisits is assistant guidance director and teaches Religion 2. He was graduated wi th a B.A. in Philosophy from St. Mary's College at Winona, Minn., and received his M.Ed. in guidance and counseling from Loyola. He has done further work at De Paul.

Mrs. Shirley Cari, a graduate of Jones Commercial High School in Chicago, is the secretary-assistant in the guidance office. In her first year at Rice, she enjoys water sports, golf, bowling, and music.

Mr. J. P. Cummings, a five-year member of the faculty, teaches Religion 4 in addition to his duties as junior counselor. He was graduated from St. Ambrose College with a B.A. in History, and received his guidance training at Chicago State College.

Miss Anne C. Tripp is in her fourth year on the staff of Brother Rice, serving as reference librarian. An assistant to Brother Pilon, she received her Ph.B. degree from the University of Chicago.

Br. Eugene G. Pilon, in his fourteenth year at Rice, is the only remaining member of the original faculty when the school opened in 1956. He serves as head librarian, holding a B.S. in Library Science from Rosary College, and moderates the school's library club. In addition, he is the founder of the Rice Mothers' Club and now acts as moderator of the Moms' Alumnae Club. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Seattle University.

!'tIrs. Emily Prerost is in her tenth year at Rice as library assistant. She attended Lindblom High School and Crawford College, where she received a B.S. in business. In her spare time, she enjoys travel, reading, and bowling.

Library

Mrs. Helen Strassheirn, in her first year on the staff of Brother Rice. is a native of Montreal and zraduute of Senn High School in Chicago. She has done college work at Wilson College, and is involved in the auxiliary of Christ Community Hospital.

Religion

Rev. William V. McDonough, now in his third year on the faculty, teaches Religion and acts as School Chaplain, assisting Father James. He received an A.B. at St. Ambrose College and an M.A. at the University of Illinois. He has done graduate work at Loyola University, Catholic University, Fordham University, and University of Chicago. He is in residence at Queen of Martyr's Rectory, and this year celebrates his twenty-fifth anniversary in the priesthood.

Br. James T. Marque, graduate of lona College, teaches Religion and English. A four-year faculty member he is presently a candidate for an M.A. at St. Xavier's College. He is director of Religious Activities, Project '70, and Vocations. He also moderates Varsity Bowling, Soccer, Standard. and is adult education coordinator.

Br. P. L. l!attigan, a three-year member of the faculty, teaches ReJigion 2, 3, and 4, as head of the Religious Education Department. He received his B.A. from lona College and Loyola University, and has done graduate work at Lewis and St. Xavier Colleges. He is currently working toward his M.A. in Theology from Notre Dame. He is also CALM moderator, as well as JV Baseball moderator and adult education coordinator.

Mr. Patrick J. Nash, graduate of Rice and of Notre Dame, teaches Religion 3 and 4, and Problems of Democracy. In his first year at Rice, he is presently studying for an M.A. in Urban Affairs at Loyola.

Mr. Robert Kirsehten, u BRHS graduate, is in his first year as a religion teacher on the faculty. He received his B.A. at De Paul University and his M.A. at the University of Chicago, where he is presently a candidate for a Ph.D.

~Ir. James C. Lalley, Chainnan of the English Department in his sixth year at Rice, teaches English 3 and 4. He was graduated with a B.A. from St. Mary's College and received his M.A. from DePaul. He is currently working toward his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Bro. John P. McGraw. in his third year at Rice, teaches English 3 and 4 and Religion 3. He received a B.A. from lona College, and is working toward a M.Ed. from St. Xavier's. He is moderator of the Dad's Club, and coordinator of the St. Cyril's CALM group.

Mr. Josepb B. Bergmann who teaches English 4 and Problems of Democracy is an eightyear faculty member. He holds a B.S. in Social Science. He is currently studying at the Loyola School of Law. In his spare time, he enjoys golf and reading in the social sciences.

English

Br. John D. O'Keefe is a graduate of Leo and holds a B.A. and M.A. in English, and is presently a Ph.D. candidate at Loyola. He teaches Engliah 4 and Religion 4, and is in his third year at Rice.

Mr. Hal Ross has a B.S. degree from Northeast Missouri State University. He is speech and debate coach and President of the Chicago Catholic Forensics League. In his second year at Rice, he teaches Freshman Speech and Reading in Literature.

Mr. Kevin Hickey, in hi. third year on our faculty, teaches English 2. He graduated with a B.A. degree in Philosophy from Christian Brothers College, and has done work at Loyola University. He is moderator of Impulse, the literary publication, and is assistant moderator of the Debate and Forensics teams.

Br. Michael Duerr, from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, graduated from Lewis College with a B.A. in English, after completing his first two years at Iona College. He teaches English 1 and Religion 1, and is moderator of the Freshman Football and Basketball teams.

Mr. James Ml1rphy, a graduate of BRHS, and of Notre Dame, teaches English 1 and 3. In his first year at Rice, he is also as• istant track coach.

Mr. Joseph Perry, Attendance Officer of the school, teaches English 1 and 3. A resident of Chicago, he received his B.A. from Villanova University in Philadelphia. In his spare time, he enjoys raising and showing his Irish Setters.

Mr. Michael Raftery, in his third year on the faculty of Brother Rice, teaches English 1 and 3, and Religion 4. He received his B.A. from lona College and is working toward his M.A . from the University of Chicago.

Mr. Robert Burt, also a graduate of Rice, and of John Carrol University, teaches English 2 and 3, as well as Speech. He is currently working toward his Master's at DePaul, while coaching the track and cross-country teams here at Rice.

Br. James Sloan, from Co. Down, Ireland, teaches English 1. He received both his B.A. and M.A. at Fordham University. In his spare time, he enjoys both reading and fishing.

Mr. John O'Leary teaches English 2 and World History. He received his B.A. in History and English at Iona College, and is doing post-graduate work at Chicago State College.

Mr. Paul Lyons, a graduate of Leo H.S., and a newcomer to the faculty of Brother Rice, is a graduate of St. Joseph's College, where he received a B.A. in English. He also moderates the Chess team.

Br. Thomas Mahoney is a graduate of Leo H.S. and holds a B.A. from Iona College and an M.A. from Gonzaga University. He has been a Rice faculty member for 6 years, and is now teaching English 1 and Religion 2. He moderates the wrestling, track, and cross-country teams.

Br. J. B. Moore, in his thirteenth year at Brother Rice, teaches Latin 1, 3, and 4, and Religion 3. He is head of the Latin Department, and was graduated from Fordham University; he has an M.A. from the Catholic University. He is also coach of the tennis team.

Br. K. X. Wolf is head of the Language Department and manager of the bookstore. He teaches French 1, 2, 3, and 4, and is in his eighth year at Rice. A native of Seattle, Washington, he holds a B.A. from lona College and is working toward an M.A. from Notre Dame.

~frs. Patricia Kominiarek, in her third year at Rice, teaches French 1, 2, and 4. She received a B.A. in French from Mundelein College, and also attended Laval University in Quebec. In her spare time, she enjoys books, music, and films.

Mrs. Helen Pitula is in her third year as a member of the Rice faculty. She holds a B.A. from DePaul University, and teaches Spanish 1 and 2.

Mis 5 Rosemary 'Riordan is a graduate of Northern Illinois University where she received a B.A. degree. She teaches Spanish, and is in her first year as a member of the Rice faculty.

Languages

Br. Jerome A. Heustis teaches Spanish 2 and Religion 4 in his second year at Rice. He holds a B.A. from lana College and is attending Notre Dame University. A native of Seattle, Washington, he is moderator of the Dance Committee.

Mr. Steven A. Rosenzweig, in his first year on the faculty of Brother Rice, teaches Spanish 1 and 2. He received his B.A. from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.

Mr. P. J. Ahern, a five-year member of the faculty of BRHS, teaches Latin 1 and 2 and Religion 2. He was graduated from St. Mary's College. and is also a M.A. candidate at DePaul University.

Sister Mary Ruth Gartland, in her first year on the faculty at Rice, teaches French 3. She has a B.A. from St. Xavier's College and an M.A. from DePaul. She has done graduate work at the University of Colorado. Rosary College, and Laval University in Quebec.

Fr. J. R. Gallagher is in his first year at Rice. A graduate of Quigley, he teaches Spanish 2, 3, and 4. He received a B.A. in Philosophy and an M.A. in Religion from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary; he also has an M.A. in Spanish from Lovola and an M.A. in History from DePaul. He is a participant in the Spanish Speaking Apostolate and the Filipino Cultural Studies.

Social Studies

Mr. Edward J. Bara, in his fifth year at BRHS, teaches U.S. and World History. He received his B.A. from St. Joseph's College, and is a candidate for his Master's at DePaul University. He is also assistant football coach.

Br, R. P. Stanich is a Rice graduate and holds a B.A. in History from Iona College. In his third year at Rice he teaches Religion and U.S. History.

Mr. R. F. Baader, a graduate of Loyola U. and now pursuing post graduate studies at Loyola, teaches World History and Problems of Democracy, as well as Russian History, the first Social Studies department elective. A ten year faculty member, he is also moderator of the NBC-TV "It's Academic" team

Br. Austin D. Devane, a ten-year faculty member and graduate of Leo High School, teaches U.S. .and World History. He was graduated from Fordham University with a Bachelor's, and received his Master's and Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York City.

Mr. John M. Berry, a graduate of BRHS, teaches U.S. and World History and Religion TV. He holds a B.S. from Northern Illinois University, and is working towards an M.A. in Political Science. He is helping to form the BRHS Alumni Association.

Mr. Walter J. Nowicki is in his seventh year at Rice. A graduate of St. Mary's College, he holds a B.A. in History, and teaches World History at Rice. Presently, he is working toward his M.A. at DePaul University.

Fine Arts

Br. Kenneth F. Chapman, head of the Art Department, is in his eighth year at Brother Rice. He teaches Art 1 and Advanced Art. Re received his B.A. from lona College, and his M.F.A. from the Catholic University in Washington, D. C. He moderates the art club and the yearbook, and most of the paintings displayed around the school are his.

Hr. C. E. Joyce, a nine-year faculty member, teaches mechanical, architectural, and engineer. ing drawing, as well as being moderator of the swimming and water polo teams. A graduate of Leo HS. he received his B.A. from lona College and M.S. from Bradley University,

Br. James M. Coleman, a graduate of Leo High School and a three-year faculty member, heads the Mus i c Department, moderates the band, and teaches Music and Fine Arts. He holds a I3.A. from lona College in Classical Languages and has done postgraduate work at Lewis College and DePaul L'niversity.

Mr. Leo Henning is in his fourteenth year as director of the BRHS Band: he directs the bands of neighboring schools as well. He is a graduate of Mt. Carmel and enjoys golling in his free time.

Drawing

Sciences

Br. Michael D. Lucas, in his second year at Rice, teaches Physics and Religion 4. A graduate of lona College, he has received ational Science Foundation grants for graduate studies at Seton Hall and at Notre Dame.

Brother James D. Murphy, a six-year faculty member and teacher of biology, graduated from lona College and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, as well as a Master's degree from St. Mary's College. He has also attended the University of Detroit, DePaul University, and Northeastern Illinois University. He is head of the Science Department, moderator of the Science Fair and the Biology Club.

Mr. Arumugam M. Aruldoss is in his sixth year at Rice, teaching physical science. A native of India, he holds a B.A. from Loyola College of Madras, India, and has done graduate work at St. Xavier's College and Chicago State College.

Mr. Dennis Konieczny, a graduate of St. Mary's College, teaches Biology. A Rice alumni, he has been on the faculty for two years. He organized a canoeing and camping trip last summer for thirty area students.

Mr. John W. Hackett, also a Rice graduate, teaches Physical Science. A faculty member for four years, he has a B.S. in geology from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing and hunting, as well as astronomy.

Br, John B. Lackie. in his fourth year at Rice, teaches Chemistry and acts as Superior of the brothers' community. He holds a B.A. from St. Martin's College and a B.A.Ed. from Seattle University. A native of Alexander, North Dakota, he is coach of the golf team.

Hr. Lawrence J. Mooney, who teaches Chemistry, holds a B.S. from Iona College and an M.S. from Notre Dame in that subject. A native of New York City. he has tauzht for six years at Rice. His previous assignments include teaching in New York, ewfoundland, and Butte, Montana.

Mrs. Elaine F. Cichon, in her second year at Rice, teaches Biology. She attended St. Francis de Sales HS in Chicago, and was graduated from the College of St. Francis in Joliet. In her spare time, she reads, sews, and paints.

Mr. Thomas Lempkowski is the head of the Math Department at Rice, teaching Math 3 and 4. He received his B.S. in Math from the University of Illinois, and has done post-graduate work at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is a 9 year member of the faculty.

Br. Anthony O'Grady, in his sec 0 n d year at Rice, teaches Math 3 and 4. He holds a B.S. fro m Fordham University, and has done graduate work at DePaul, Chicago State, and lona. He has previously taught at St. Lawrence.

Math

Br. Lionel Haley, from Sydney, Nova Scotia, teaches Plane Geometry. and is the Monastery Treasurer. He graduated from St. Mary's College with a B.A., and worked toward his M.A. at DePaul University. He enjoys music and reading in his spare time.

Mr. Clifford Petrak is also a graduate of Rice. He holds a B.S. in Math from DePaul and is a M.S. in Math from Chicago State College. He is in his sixth year at Rice, and teaches Algebra. He also moderates the Hockey and FreshSoph baseball teams.

Mr. Edward nobinson. a graduate of De La Snlle H.S. and of Christian Brothers College, teaches Geometry and Algebra. He has completed graduate work at Xavier University and at St. Mary's College. He is in his third year on the faculty, and IS moderator of the newly-formed Black Student Union.

Dr. James McGetrick holds a B.S. in Physics from lona. He graduated from Leo H.S., and is in his first year at Rice, where he teaches Religion and Algebra. He also moderates the Sophomore Football team.

Mr. Anthony Hanrahan teaches Algebra 1 and Religion 3. A graduate of BRHS, in his second year on the faculty, he graduated with a B.A. in Math from DePaul University. He is also the football moderator.

Mr. Walter Dunne teaches Algebra 1 and Geometry, and is the assistent to the Business Manager in the office. A graduate of BRHS and of St. Joseph's College, this is his first year of teaching at Rice.

Mr. James Pignatiello is a Rice graduate. He holds a B.A. in Sociology from St. Procopius College, with a minor in Math. He is completing graduate work at Chicago State College in guirlance and counseling. In his third year at Rice, he teaches Religion and Algebra.

Dr. James Cotter, in his third year on the faculty, teaches Math and Religion. He received both a B.A. and an M.A. from Fordham University, and has done graduate work at DePaul and Columbia. He formerly taught at Leo H.S.

Dr. Eugene Vranka teaches Religion 4 and Math 3. He holds a B.A. from Iona and M.Sc. in Education from Fordham. He is moderator of the St. Cecilia's CALM group, as well 35 organizer of the senior trip and the European Tour. He is in his sixth year at Rice.

Thomas College, and has previously taught at St. Benedict HS.

Athletics

Mr. T. J. Johnston, perhaps the best-known faculty member to the students, is in his twelfth year at Rice. A graduate of Leo HS, he teaches Religion 1 and Physical Education. He has a B.S. in Business Administration from DePaul. In his spare time, he enjoys bowling and reading from the Old Testament.

Mr. Richard E. Marfise is a graduate of Leo and holds a B.A. in Business Administration from the College of St. Thomas. He teaches Accounting, Business Law, and Economics. This is his third year at Rice.

Mr. Michael J. Coffey, a second-year faculty member native of Philadelphia, received an A.B. from otre Dame and an M.A. from Temple University. He is currently working toward an M.I.R. from Loyola. He teaches Economics and Problems of Democracy, and is assistant track and cross-country coach.

Mr. Thomas R. Mitchell has been at Rice for five years, and teaches Business Law. He has been head football coach of the highly successful Crusaders for three years. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce from DePaul University, where he is presently doing graduate work.

Athletics

Mr. Edward, taron is in his fourth year at Rice as a physical education instructor. A graduate of Western Michigan University, he also coaches the freshman f 0 0 t b a II team and the bantamweight casket ball team, as well as teaching History and Problems of Democracy. In his spare time, he enjoys sports.

Mr. Willard C. Kellogg, in his ninth year in the athletic department, received his B.S. in Physical Education from St. Joseph's College, and is working toward his M.S. from George Williams College. A graduate of Fenwick, he is chairman of the P.E. department and coaches the basketball team,

Mr. James C. "Moose" Mulchrone is in his fir~t y.ear as full time swunmmg instruc-or. He coaches the swimming and water polo teams, and was named as AAU "Water Polo Coach of the Year" in 1969.

Mr. George Sedlacek, in his ninth year at Rice, is the' varsity baseball coach and assistant bas k e t b a II coach. A graduate of the University of TIIinois, he also serves as a Physical Education instructor. In his spare time, he enjoys sports, especially golf.

Br, D. A. Rinaldini does not teach this year at Rice, but is pursuing further studies. He received a B.A. from lana College and an M.A. from New York University. He coaches the tumbling team and the girl cheerleaders, and moderates the Alumni Dad's Club. A twelve-year member of the faculty, he comes from New York City.

Mr. Dennis H. Moll is in his fourth year at Rice. A graduate of the University of Illinois, where he received both a B.S. ann an M Ed., he teaches General Science, as well as acting as Athletic Trainer and Head Wrestling Coach.

Mr. John P. Langan teaches Physical Education in his third year at Br. Rice. He holds a B.A. from St. Ambrose College and an M.S. in Education from Northern Illinois. He is also assistant football and basketball coach.
