5th Grade: Battle of the Books

School Description and Resources

Phelps Luck Elementary School: PreK-5 enrollment – 583. Diverse school and community. Strong focus on restorative circles and
social/emotional wellbeing. Title 1 school. 62.6% students F/Reduced Lunch. 17.7% Limited English Proficiency.

Technology: Computer, projector, internet access, Battle of the Books resources

Objectives

Students will be able to analyze resources (from Battle of the Books) while listening to information.
 AASL Standards for 21st Century Learner – Standard 2.0: Locate and Evaluate Resources and Sources
 AASL Standards for 21st Century Learner – Standard 3.0: Find, Generate, Record, and Organize Data/Information.

Students will be able to record details to bring home to parents/guardians.

Learning Goal

This lesson will occur during the fifth week of school for the two 5th grade classes: Rembert (10/2) and Lardner (10/5).
 Rembert: 21 Students
 Lardner: 21 Students
o 2 Students with behavior plans
o 7 Students with IEPs

The learning goal this week is to introduce students to the Battle of the Books. During the first month, we have looked at resources
within the library and through the MackinVIA portal. With the Battle of the Books, students will have these information seeking
skills. Those who like to form a team will be able to use these info skills while reading and gathering information about the books.
This will promote self-sufficiency for reading and data collection, which will provide practice for being life-long learners in the
larger global world.
Assessment Plan

Pre-assessment:
 Determine if any students have prior knowledge about these books

Formative assessment strategies throughout the lesson:


 Battle of the Books evaluation worksheet

Formative assessment at the end of the lesson:


 Exit Ticket: listing information about the battle of the books to bring home.

Instructional Procedures

Students enter classroom to assigned seats


Share objectives:
 Today we’ll be analyzing some resources: specifically the texts for Battle of the Books
 We will also be recording information for you to bring home

Give students the basic outline of Battle of the Books

Team information:
 No limit on number of teams per school (so anyone who would like to participate can)
 5 members to register
 3 teams must be present at the Battle (April 5, 2019)
 Teams will receive a set of BoB books
 Coach: Adult over 18

[Trailers]
Students will watch book trailers and complete the 5th Grade Battle of the Books – Evaluation worksheet
 Prior to trailer, show students the book
 Preassessments: Has anyone read this book?

10:00 Exit Ticket


 Students should complete their exit ticket
 Take Home: Exit ticket, Interest form, BoB Evaluation sheet

[Book Checkout]
We will begin with book checkouts
 Reminder: check out books, then return to seats

10:10 – Prepare for end of class and line up


Pass out bookmarks for students who selected a fiction book
Remind students to take home information

Multiple Means of Representation


 Guideline 1 – Perception: This lesson includes auditory and visual information for students, giving them a general outline of
each book through video and speech.
 Guideline 3 – Language & Symbols: The videos show illustration of the texts through multi-media formats.

 Guideline 4 – Expression & Communication: Students will be required to utilize their work to communicate with
parents/staff.
 Guideline 6 – Executive Functions: Teams will be required to create a strategy for reading texts and gathering information.

learning.
