Classroom Management

Kerri Ranck
6th grade Physical Education Teacher
Introduction
The purpose of this assignment is to start planning my first year of teaching. My management
plan is how I plan on making sure my school year is as productive and smooth as possible.
Everyone’s Style of teaching is different, and I feel that this is what will work best for my
classroom. As the year goes on I will adapt and enhance anything needed to provide the safest
and most productive class as possible.
Preparing for the school year

 List to do during pre- planning work week- Meet other teachers on campus, Meet with
ESE teacher and nurse so were on the same page with our students, Organize and clean
my office space, locker room and equipment room.
 First week schedule and tone for school year- One the first week of school I want to
introduce myself and learn students name, I want to go over the outline of the semester
and stick to my word and show students I mean what I say, but also that Physical activity
is fun. I want to really focus on management and protocols for this first week as well.
For example bathroom breaks, water breaks, whistle, emergency.
 Assess, collect data and grade my students- I will assess my students three times a year
and by doing the same fitness test each time. I am not exactly sure which test I will
include yet. I just started my middle school rotation of pre-internship and haven’t talked
about this yet. I will grade my students based on dressing out, participation and respect
every day. Test and assessments will have added in too of course. Everyday Students will
have the opportunity to earn 9 points a day. 3 for wearing the correct shirt, shorts and
shoes. 3 for participating and 3 for respecting equipment, teachers and classmates. If a
student lacks part of the dressing out for instant doesn’t have the correct shorts on,
then will only earn 2 points and same for the other categories.
 Adaptions/modifications for LEP students- I am currently trying to learn Spanish, I will
also speak slow and clear and have a student translator buddy if a translator aide is not
available. Also, I believe giving good and bad examples of what I am trying to teach is
very beneficial.
 General adaptions/modifications for ESE/APE students- This will depend on if the ESE
students are combined in a general class or if I will have a class period to just focus on
Adapted P.E. I plan on reaching out and receiving/ buying any equipment than could
help get my students more involved. I will break down lessons and cues to where we can
focus on one skill at a time.
Procedures & Rountines

 How I will spend my morning- I plan on arriving to school one hour before my first class
starts. This will give me time to set up any activities or equipment for the day, clean up
after any previous games from the night before (volleyball/ basketball using the gym),
this will also allow me time to be present in the courtyard when students start arriving
to school or maybe even have bus or cafeteria duty.
 Students will meet me outside of the locker room before the bell rings, that’s when I will
take attendance, then they will have 8 minutes to change and meet me in the gym on
their Polly stickers. If they are not seated in their spot when my alarm goes off they are
tardy. Students must be wearing tennis shoes, our school P.E shorts and our school P.E
shirt. Simple stud earnings, rings and other jewelry is allowed unless it becomes a
distraction or harm. Also, restroom breaks, and water breaks are to be taken now.
Students may bring water bottle with them to wherever we go for class.
 Begin/end class- The organization method I will use to assemble class is how I have
everyone meet me outside of the locker room when the bell rings. I also keep them
together spread out in the gym, so I can keep their focus before we move outside or
elsewhere for the activity. I will use a whistle to end class always.
 Role- I will take roll before class, after locker room when on Polly spots and then after
students dress back in they will meet in gym until bell rings.
 Illness/injury- If a student claims they cannot participate due to an illness or injury I will
request a parent or doctors note. If it seems like something serious I will send the
student to the nurse. If I feel it is not I will tell them to do what they can, but not push
them to their fullest. Also I will send a quick email home informing the guardian.
 Tardy/Absence- A student has two opportunities to be tardy a day in my class. If a
student is tardy more than 3 times in my class during a semester, they get a warning.
After 5 an email sent home. Any more than that I will follow the school guideline which
would probably include a lunch detention or ISS. If a student is absence more than 5
times a semester I will have a brief talk with them and the guidance counselor
separately to make sure we are all o the same page. Student can always make up work
after school if they have an excused absence.
 Helpers/peer buddies- I will assign peer buddies when needed. For example for a LEP or
APE student. I don’t think I will need equipment or time helpers because we are not in
Elementary anymore. Also, if a student needs to go to the nurse I will always send two
students to walk together.
 Attention signals- While in the gym when I am talking no one else should be. When I
blow my whistle that means stop and eyes on me. If I clap twice that means I am about
to start talking and to be quiet and eyes on me. When I say “Go” they may go.
 Questions/comments- Students must raise their hand
 Equipment- I plan on having all equipment set up before the class starts. With that
being said when class is over everyone must put all equipment where they found it. The
last class of the day may help bring some equipment in.
 Water/Bathroom breaks- All must be done before we leave locker rooms. Students may
bring water bottle with them.
 Emergency/injury- This is where a helper may come in need. I will have a emergency
helper where if anything happened to me they will know to grab my walkey talkey and
contact office. Another student will tell the class to sit down and wait quietly while
waiting for another coach or teacher to take over. If an emergency with weather or a
trespasser is on campus we will follow school guidelines. If an injury occurs in my class I
will contact office/nurse and students will be instructed to sit quietly until further
instruction.
 Ending class- I will blow a whistle. All students will know that will mean to drop
equipment, be quiet and eyes on me for further instructions.
 After school- I will stay after class for at least an hour every day to reflect on my day,
respond to any emails and prepare for the following day.

Class Rules
Philosophy- My philosophy on discipline is to allow all the students to know what is expected in
the beginning. After warnings are given, a letter will be sent home. If behavior or actions aren’t
changed after that then the guidance counselor will be in involved for an action plan and
teacher/guardian meeting. I believe in being fair and that school is a place to learn with
minimal distractions.
Rules
1. Wear appropriate shoes
2. Use the restroom in locker room
3. Raise your hand
4. Dress out in P.E uniform
5. Show up to class on time
6. Respect equipment and others
