Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Universal Design for Learning principles could be addressed to extend
and support the learning experiences for all students by offering a new way for visual learners to interact with
a topic. Those who are hard of seeing will benefit from the words being displayed in large fonts on the white
board as well as on their device. There are multiple medias that Kahoot can be used with, which provides
students with options for communication.

Prior to the SRT activity, students will be reminded of the subject of earth science, which has been discussed
in previous classes before the Kahoot game. The SRT activity will be introduced with a short BrainPop video
on earth science.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The students will log into Kahoot! using a
game pin that will be displayed across the main whiteboard screen in the classroom. They will then engage in
a multiple-choice game competition with their classmates. The teacher will be in charge of moving through
the questions and reading them aloud to their students. The only needed materials are devices to play the
game on. Each question gives the students 20 seconds to answer. The activity should last about 10 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10): N/A

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Correct answers will be displayed as soon as the timer runs out after each question. This allows the student to
see if they made the correct choice, and also allows them to see how their classmates ranked as well using an
automatically generated bar chart of the answers that students chose.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, students will write down one thing that they learned about earth science that they
might not have known before playing the game.
How will the data be used? After each question, Kahoot automatically takes score of the answers that each
student chose. Those answers are then converted into a bar chart that shows how many students chose a
certain answer. The bar chart also keeps student information anonymous. I will take note of what questions
students did poorly on and which ones they got correct. With the ones that most of the class seemed to miss,
I will go over the topic again to make sure that everyone understands the concept.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. With this activity I am trying out a new way for my
students to understand a concept. Kahoot allows students to “compete” against their classmates for the top
score and allows them to think of the correct answer. My aim is for this game to be so interesting that
students don’t even realize that they’re practicing recalling knowledge on earth science.

Reflective Practice: After designing this idea, I feel as though this activity could give students a fresh way of
understanding and learning more about a subject. This is a great way not only to introduce a new topic, but
also to refresh students’ memory using multiple choice questions. To further extend the lesson, students
could each write one question about earth science and I could compile that into a completely new Kahoot
game that could be played. This would allow them to think creatively and be able to test not only themselves,
but their classmates as well. There are no other technology tools that could further enhance the project
besides a mobile device or computer.
