Postgraduate English Language Requirements

The following English language qualifications and tests are acceptable for entry to the University of Essex at the levels specified below. If you are taking an English language
qualification that is not specified below, please contact the Graduate Admissions Office for advice on whether it is acceptable for entry. The levels below are the minimum entry
requirements for admission to the University and are also in line with the UK Home Office’s requirements that were introduced in 2011; the UK Home Office’s minimum
requirements apply to all students applying for a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK.

Your offer may include an English language requirement if your previous English language test was obtained more than two years before your course start date. This is in line
with UK Home Office requirements and University policy. If you are unsure why your offer specifies an additional English language test, please contact the Graduate
Admissions Office and we will be happy to clarify this for you.

You may be able to meet your English language requirement by taking a pre-sessional English course at the University of Essex. For more information about these courses,
please visit

https://www1.essex.ac.uk/pathways/study/pre-sessional/

Our Essex Pathways pre-sessional English courses are normally only valid for entry to a main course which starts immediately after the pre-sessional course.

If you take a pre-sessional English course but then are not able to start your main course in October, the pre-sessional course will not normally remain valid. If we are able to
offer you a later start date for your main course, we will ask you for an alternative proof of your English language proficiency.

Students requiring a Tier 4 UK student visa

For students who will require a Tier 4 visa to study at the University of Essex, please see the information below:

 For students taking English language tests and requiring a Tier 4 visa to study at the University of Essex, all of the tests specified here are acceptable.

 If you are studying at degree-level and above, the tests can be taken at any test centre, not just approved test centres.

 If you will be studying a course below degree-level (including a Pre-sessional English course) you will need to have taken an IELTS or Trinity test at an approved test
centre.

 If you have taken more than one test, we will normally use your most recent test to determine your level of English proficiency, and (if applicable) the length of English
language course that you require.
