In the context of the home, the connected room of one’s own would speak to us about
protection and a greater bodily fixedness, i.e. the measurable response to the vulnerability
imposed by an accelerated world. It would speak about the possibility to protect the body-
centre of operations, far from the anguish of its fragmenting and death, where “one” still
feels in charge of one’s being. However, in the connected room of one’s own the visibility and
implication outside is viable and this possibility is absolutely transgressive.
Science fiction, in this sense, has devoted huge amounts of imagination to recreating
forms of connection and protection of the body, whilst something external –yet personal and
linked – comes into play, representing us. Without a doubt, films such as Matrix and Avatar
are the most obvious examples of these formulas. Where isolation does not become autism
(this interpretation could be seen, however, in the film Surrogates), but forms of spacialisation
which allow for the autonomy and optimisation of times and energies.
Of course, at present (fiction and non fiction), these forms of “unfolding” which seek
to safeguard the body still coexist with post-modern hypermobility, in a play of tensions
compatible with globalised life. In fact, it is revealing to observe that “being home, outside”
is now one of the co-narratives of this hypermobility.
We find, however, an obstacle in this trend to one’s own room. This is because,
inasmuch as capitalism and its heirs, post-crisis, (material) movement and speed, operate
as a vertebrating axis of its system and guarantee of expenditure and consumption, this
move toward the connected home does not seem to be a trend to which capitalism will
yield without a fight. At least not until mobility and physical showcases lose momentum,
and online economies grow. It seems, therefore, that the scenario of the connected home
would point at new demands of political, and economic, imagination, the result of a capitalist
system which oscillates between repeating itself and reimagining itself, but is not willing
to give in, just like that. These demands initially seem to be opportunities to devise new
economies and policies in a networked society.
Without a doubt, the old “home” scenario, a pivot and reverse of mobility is preparing
to become “something different” and demands, in that sense, a new definition, as well as a
critical observation of its handicaps and potential, from each of its nodes. An exercise which
allows us to delve into the possibilities of emancipation of networked individuals, but which
also actively involves us in imagination –appropriation of the future from the most critical and
utopian versions (which are still to be carried out) of our own connected rooms.
A room of one’s own forms part of a home, and as such, the home has been traditionally
feminised and identified with women because of the social, cultural and economic activities
which subjugated them to the care the family and the raising of children. The interpretations
on the domestic world, private life and the emotional, political and economic histories which
took place there have not traditionally held productive or prestigious value, beyond inspiring
a range of cultural myths on women and strengthening their role in reproduction, rather that
in the production of knowledge. Private spaces have been so for a long enough to cause
speechlessness.
As a differential space in the private space, a private room in a house offers a
paradoxical relationship, rebelling against the lack of value assigned to the space as a
whole. This is the thesis proposed by Virginia Woolf, who claimed that the structure and
distribution of any living space is a conditioning factor which assigns certain people certain
occupations and, therefore, different expectation and possibilities for being in life. The
chance to appropriate private and intimate space for a redistribution of its use is clearly a
meaningful political act; an action which rearranges the value and meaning socially given to
these spaces. In this relational scheme, the room of one’s own demanded by Woolf, as a

of exhibition projects, in direct relation with another dealing with
cultural and educative action, which has enabled us to apply gender
quotas in each and all of our programmes for the first time.
What has been the response both in the local and the international
or more specialized context?
Firstly, it has served as a reference point for the local art community.
For example, permanent programmes have been generated, like
Next –production of exhibitions by artists during their training
period– which we carried out with the Facultad de Bellas Artes of the
Universidad del País Vasco/EHU, and which played a very important
role in the type of connection that has been established in the
context of the community. Similarly, the commitment to international
contemporary art began to bear fruit from the very beginning, and
the fact is that the programme Arte e Investigación, which produced
eight art projects every year, one curatorship and three research
programmes connected the immediate scenario to those more
distant through dialogue, and also positioned us as a reference point
on the international scene in record time. The projects worked on
from the centre, with their responsibilities throughout the year, made
up the programming of the second four-month period, continuing
the line of individual and collective exhibitions we have carried
out focused on the re-reading from contemporary art practices of
recent political and social transformation processes, among which,
naturally, is feminism.

as predicted by the various myths regarding the origins of

naturalization –or mythification– of art and an artistic system
that is accepted by erasing any chance of transformation.
Other lesser-known series go beyond this
appropriationism, which is quite banal today, but which,
at the time, encapsulated the post-modern aesthetic in
order to reinterpret geometric abstraction, for example Melt
Down, whose monochrome nature is the result of digitally
mixing colours from famous paintings. More surprising are
the billiards constructed from the work La Fortune, by Man
Ray, a painting displayed as part of the exhibition Real/
Surreal, on another floor of the Whitney. These billiards
tables are situated in an ambiguous context: the object is
clearly recognizable but no one fails to notice the fact that
its huge dimensions and sturdy legs return it to the space
of pictorial representation.
In a way, the exhibition appears to refute certain ideas
associated with “plagiarism” and the entire generation,
Levine included, that participated in the famous exhibition
Pictures. In 1977, Douglas Crimp established a clear
distinction between the experience of the minimal and
that sparked by the works included in Pictures. Thus,
The Bachelors, an adaptation of Duchamp’s moulds,
particularly Crystal Skull, and arranged in two adjacent
display cases, convey a strange feeling: the reflection of
objects repeated in the glass, which is indistinguishable
from the viewer, who has also become phantasmagorical.
This experience seems to challenge the viewer’s immersion
in the work, an interesting twist when you consider that
one of the main structuring elements in Levine’s critique
was authorship. More interestingly, these works seem to
reinterpret the theatrical space of minimalism, questioning
its phenomenological charge and introducing meanings
that are not susceptible to being seduced by the emptiness

FRAC Île-de-France, Le Plateau, institutional heart of the network
of galleries and studios of this working class area.
The starting point of this exhibition is the work by the Italian
designer Bruno Munari: instead of a retrospective, the curators have
proposed a prospective, making his projects as inventor, designer,
writer, graphic artist and, above all, pedagogue, engage in dialogue
with the artistic strategies of others. The economy of means and
the playful nature of Munari’s aesthetic strategies are used as the
methodological guideline of the exhibition: a compilation of his
projects in several supports, such as slide shows, models, games,
prototypes and books are presented on a series of overlapping
tables, like a solo exhibition in miniature which manages to
represent in a scenographic way the processes of hybrid and
contaminant creativity of the artist in all their potentiality. As well
as including artists born in France around the middle of the 1970s,
like Isabelle Cornaro, Mark Geffriaud, Julien Crépieux and Emilie
Parendeau, names from the eastern scene are included, such as
Chitti Kasemkitvatana, from Thailand, and the Japanese collective
The Play. At the same time, they succeed in connecting this scene
with fundamental artists of the pioneer generation active in the
1960s, establishing natural genealogies of the French scene,
through Robert Filliou, and of the Eastern scene, with the Fluxus
strategies of Mieko Shioni.
In a way, the exhibition connects these correspondences, in an
attempt to provoke an affinity to the process’s shared experience in
the spectator, more than for a specific result. The title is taken from

MANUEL SEGADE

Repetition is the most persistent feature of the
work by Emilia Azcárate which provides the
backbone of both this exhibition at the Distrito
4 Gallery and the rest of her work. For her the
continuous production of patterns is linked to
education. It is a way of teaching. Better still, of
showing. Azcárate recounts that when she was
small she was made to do many repetitions as a
punishment; however, now that time has reversed
its meaning, she does them for pleasure. For
Freud repeating is not remembering the forgotten,
but living it again and, although she prefers Jung,
it is true that there is a new absolute dedication to

Roland Fisher (Munich, 1958) transforms the visible limits of ordinary
reality by fragmentation; that which takes place in a certain intersection
of the mechanical with the human unconscious. A sliding caused by the
to-and-fro motion between subjectivity and objectivity and the relation
of all this with the image. His way is dialogue and confrontation with
the spectator, questioning the act of looking thus as a reproduction of
his own cosmology.
Modern because of its serial and archivistic nature, his work has
been articulated around photographic projects centred on a subject
which he tackles systematically with the aim of producing exhaustive
groups of both analogical and digital images. The investigation into
classic genres such as the portrait and architecture appears grouped
in series that he abandons and takes up again (close to eighty works N28, 1986.
