§ The earth receives 1.74 x
1017 watts of power (per
hour) from the sun

§ About one or 2 percent of this

energy is converted to wind
energy (which is about 50-100
times more than the energy
converted to biomass by all
plants on earth (www.windpower.org)

• in 1919 Betz concluded that no
wind turbine can convert more
than 16/27 (59.3%) of the kinetic
energy of the wind into
mechanical energy turning a
rotor.

• To this day this is known as

the Betz Limit or Betz' Law.

• This limit has nothing to do with

inefficiencies in the generator,
but in the very nature of wind
turbines themselves.

1. The moving air spins the turbine blades. The blades are
connected to a low-speed shaft. When the blades spin,
the shaft turns.

1. The low-speed shaft is connected to a gearbox. Inside, a

large slow-moving gear turns a small gear quickly.

1. The small gear turns another shaft at high speed.

1. The high-speed shaft is connected to a generator. As the

shaft turns the generator, it produces electricity.

1. The electric current is sent through cables down the

turbine tower to a transformer that changes the voltage of
the current before it is sent out on transmission lines.

San Jose, Dinagat
• consists of twelve (12) municipalities
• population of more than 30, 000 adults
or at most 6, 000 households
• San Jose also hosts a number of beach
resorts and recreation centers.
• presently powered by a diesel power
plant with installed capacity of 1.93 MW
which operates for 18 hours a day
• at other times of the day, San Jose is
deprived of electricity 

San Jose, Dinagat
• Dinagat Island exhibits moderate
wind resource.
• This means that Dinagat Island
can harness wind energy at a rate
of 200-300 W/m2 with a wind
speed of 5.6-6.4 m/s.
• At this rated wind speed and with
a fairly sized wind farm, the total
demand of San Jose can be met.
