N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Sarah Franzen Date of Activity: September 13th, October 23rd, November 6th, and

November 13th Faculty name: Rajni Parmar

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with:

At the lactation education workshop, I learned from a presentation presented by the

lactation consultants and an occupational specialist that work at St. Joseph’s. They presented on

topics about nursing shields, nipple shells, nursing pumps, bottle feeding techniques, and signs of

low blood sugar in babies.

Attending the postpartum depression (PPD) coalition was inspiring and eye-opening. I

listened to presentations about how healthcare workers can help the patients who are

experiencing miscarriages or stillbirths. It was moving to hear from mothers who have

experienced this personally. It was a good opportunity to hear from different resources for new

mothers in the Tucson area.

The Gateway Tucson Network Meeting was a great opportunity to further explore the

resources for new mothers/families that Tucson has to offer. During this meeting, everyone

introduced themselves and their businesses. Some of the professions that were there were a L&D

nurse at TMC, an OB/GYN, a nanny services director, a massage specialist, a pediatrician, a

TOPS case manager supervisor, a musical specialist, and a daycare director. After the initial

presentation of information and transitions the network would be going through, it was a great

opportunity for me to introduce myself to some of the members.

At the BLS recertification, I was able to practice the resuscitation skills on adult and

infant mannequins. The instructor facilitated active participation, allowing me to answer

questions and follow along in the book.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length? Lactation Education

Workshop: St. Joseph’s Hospital Mother-Baby unit conference room for one hour. PPD

Coalition: St. Joseph’s Hospital Auditorium for 2.5 hours. Gateway Tucson Network Meeting:

Care More on North Stone Avenue for two hours BLS Recertification: 4500 E. Speedway for 2.5

hours.

Discuss the value of this experience to you. Being able to attend multiple educational

experiences has been valuable to me in many ways. I feel that it has helped me to make

connections in Tucson within the specialty of women’s health. I also think that the lactation

education workshop helped to prepare me for my shadowing experience with a lactation

consultant. I think it was valuable to practice resuscitation skills in a controlled environment to

enhance quality in a real situation.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why

or why not? I would recommend the lactation education workshop, the Gateway Tucson

network meeting, and the PPD coalition to anyone remotely interested in women’s health, L&D,

or NICU. I think it’s a great way to learn about local resources for future patients and create

connections that could be useful in finding a job.
