WORKSHEET
Performance statements:
You must:
a. Work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations
guidelines
b. Follow the relevant instructions, working drawings and any other specifications
c. Ensure that the specified workpiece is available and that is in a usable condition.
d. Perform the appropriate welding techniques of the workpiece in their correct process and
position.
e. Check the appearance and thickness of welding bead that meet the specification.
f. Deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that cannot
be solved.
You must:
1. Carry out all of the following welding bead steps:
To correct material preparation prior the welding practice is done.
To set up the machine and equipment for welding process correctly.
To check the marking out on the material as a weld guidance correctly.
To check the bead appearance and thickness correctly.
To check the angle of workpiece is accurately perpendicular.
To check the length of bead is according to the specification or drawing.
To produce a quality weld bead.
2. Every workshop safety procedures and precautions must be followed during cutting and
welding processes are done and as follows:
Beware of sharpen cutting edges.
Beware of hot workpiece and welding beads.
Wear welding helmet/shield and hand gloves while welding workpiece is carried out.
Workshop jacket is compulsory worn during welding a workpiece or practice.
Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) once enter the workshop.

WORKSHEET
Knowledge statements:
1. The specific safety precautions to be taken when working in a fabrication environment and
when producing structural components (general workshop and site safety, appropriate
personal protective equipment, accident procedure; statutory regulations, risk assessment
procedures and DOSH/NIOSH regulations)
2. The personal protective clothing and equipment that needs to be worn when carrying out the
fabrication activities (leather gloves, eye protection, safety helmets, ear protection etc.)
3. Working practices safely and procedures needed for producing baseplate.
4. Interpreting the necessary drawings specifications.
5. Interpreting first and third angle drawings, imperial and metric system of measurement,
workpiece reference points and system of tolerancing
6. The preparations that need to be carried out on the baseplate prior to cutting it.
7. Setting up the SMAW machine and equipment that are used. (Refer Notes)
8. The SMAW process, techniques and practices on the mild steel plate.
9. The safety factors prior, during and after welding practice is done.
10. The use and care of SMAW tools and equipment, and control procedures.
11. Inspection techniques that can be applied to check shape (including straightness) and
dimensional accuracy are to specification and within acceptable limits.
12. The extent of your own responsibility and whom you should report to if you have problems
that you cannot resolve.
13. Reporting lines and procedures, lines supervision and technical experts.
Instructions:
1. Cut two pieces of mild steel plates which size 100mmx50mm and 3mm thickness. (Refer
Drawing)
2. Weld a T-Joint on the center of that plate which uses SMAW process and 25mm length both
sides of tack welds. (Refer Drawing).
3. Weld (Flat Position – 1F) four tack weld beads which is 3mm maximum thickness.
4. Check and ensure that the angle of T-Joint is perpendicular.
5. Use the cellulose electrode type and its classification is E6013 with 2.5mm or 3.25mm
diameter.
6. Beware of hot bead and metal or workpiece.
7. Do not inhale any smokes/shielded gas.
