You put ji after the number to say ‘ ~o’clock’ .
Eg. 3:00 san ji

You put han to say ‘ half past ~’ .


Eg. 3:30 san ji han

Please pay special attention to the following time.


4:00 yon -ji Yo ji
7:00 nana -ji shichi ji
9:00 kyuu -ji ku ji
You put fun after the minutes
5 minutes go fun
Eg. 3:05 San ji go fun

15 minutes juu go fun


25 minutes ni juu go fun
35 minutes san juu go fun
45 minutes yon juu go fun
55 minutes go juu go fun
You make a little pause and put pun after the minutes.
10 minutes juppun
Eg. 3:10 san ji juppun

20 minutes ni juppun

40 minutes yon juppun

50 minutes go juppun
50 minutes go juppun

Small つ
You put desu to say ‘ It is ~’ .
Eg. It is 3:00 San ji desu.
It is 3:30 San ji han desu.

Q. What time is it? Q. Nan ji desuka.

A. It is 3:00. A. San ji desu.

Q. What time is it now? Q. Ima nan ji desuka.
You write small to indicate a little pause.

(Tsuki=moon, Mimasu=to watch/view).
They traditionally, offer rice dumplings and Japanese pampas grass to the moon.
