1) Define-

Prejudice: an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an

individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristics.
Discrimination: to make a difference in treatment or favor on a basis
other than individual merit.
Oppression: unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power.
Audism: the act of oppressing and discriminating against deaf people
as a cultural group.
2) History-
• Back in the day schools were forced to use the oralism methods.
How did the oralism start? In 1880 a group of people attend a
conference and discussed how they thought we should teach deaf
students. One person argued that ASL was the best way for 3 hours
and another man argued that they should use the oral method for 3
days. In the end they use the oral method. Also, did I mention that
NONE of the deaf students or people who knew the deaf culture
was allowed in the meeting.
3) Base on my current knowledge about audiology. When I go to
center of hearing and speech, I take a “Hearing test” with and without
my CI. When the test is over my audiologist would give me two
charts (the one to the right and the one to the left) then she would
explain what I can hear and what I can’t hear. The one to the left is a
graph with different cartoon clip art explaining that I can hear this
decibel but can’t hear this decibel. This chart use is the most because
it is the best visual representation of different hearing levels.

5) In the early 2000 our cochlear implants use to look like this

but over the years the cochlear implant got

smaller and smaller to fit around your ear.
6) Diagnosis- As a baby the child is given a hearing test before they
leave the hospital. Most of the time the child's hearing is caught at
this time. In other cases, some of the kids will start losing their
hearing at a later age. Which is called late deaf.
7) Education and training- To be an audiologist you need to have a
doctoral degree in audiology and a masters in any field. Before you
start working you need to earn 300 –375 hours. To be an ASL teacher
you need to have a bachelor’s degree in education and a certification
in ASL.

This a rubric Ms. Pickett uses when students give a presentation. She
gives them a grade in each “sub-class”.
10) Theories-
Back to 1880 Alexander Graham, the man who invented the
telephone, believed that if two deaf people got married and then they
had a kid. The kid would most likely be deaf. Which is why
Alexander didn’t want two deaf people to be married. Later his belief
was tested and realized that his theory was wrong. 90% of the people
who are deaf has a hearing parent. 10% who are deaf and have deaf
parent. Also, people believed that their was such thing as Deaf gene,
which is not true.
