INTRODUCTION
As due to fast construction worldwide demand of natural sand as a building
material is concrete, mortar or plaster is very much.

Natural sand is a natural product made from process by river that takes
thousands of years .as this material is of very high quality so consumption
is also is very large because of its superior quality.

As a result of this sand mining is done, and this business has leads to
cause severe damage to natural flow of river.

Because of this river will change its course and cause flooding effects
sometimes.

Thus by seeing these scenario and future conditions we are required to

switch to alternate of natural sand Manufactured sand is made from
different rocks like basalt, granite to tackle demand of natural sand.

SCOPE OF WORK
By seeing all these scenario I was intended to make a new product of
plaster using M-sand (manufactured sand ),cement of suitable grade and
lime by suitable proportion to made and just by adding water ready to use
on walls ,sealing etc, In my perspective it would reduce the amount of load
on natural sand .
MATERIALS TOBE USED

1. M-SAND
2. CEMENT OF SUITABLR GRADE
3. LIME

PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
• M-sand: manufacture sand is one that is obtained by crushing the
rocks .It is a perfect alternate for river sand used in construction
purposes.
• When compared to River sand ,M-sand costs 40-50% lesser and also
percentage of wastage like clay , marine particles etc found in M-
sand is zero.
• M sand is basically produced in plant and has a good quality control
over their gradation which was very important for any sand to used as
construction material. As total not resemble to natural sand but can
be alternative.
• Generally river sand needs to be sieved so that large stone particles,
pebbles can be removed.
• Whereas for M-sand it is graded into types concrete M-sand and
plastering M-sand.
• Indian code related to PLASTER RELATED SAND is IS-1542
• The ideal size of sand for plaster is from 150 micron to 2.36mm.
• Difference between m-sand and river sand
River sand M-sand
• Rounded and spherical • Relatively more angular
particles
• Needs less water • Needs more water,
workability is high
• Lighter density • Relatively heavier
• Contains marine deposits • Relatively more uniform and
and silt contain less impurity.
2. CEMENT
• Specification about cement is given in IS-3466
• It should be either OPC-43 grade or OPC- 53

3. LIME:
Role of lime in plaster:
• It does not allow cement and sand to separate.
• Studies have shown that cement-lime mortars can be used to
minimize the potential for water penetration into masonry walls.
• Extent of bond - Low air content, a fine particle size, high plasticity
and water retention contribute to excellent extent of bond for cement
lime mortars. This eliminates easy migration paths for water
penetration.
• Automatic healing - When hairline cracks develop in the mortar,
hydrated lime reacts with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This
reaction produces limestone which helps to seal the crack and fill
voids in the mortar. This explains the increased moisture resistance
noted after six months of curing in two studies.
• Working with lime is given in IS-712(SPECIFICATION FOR
BUILDING LIME)

Tests to be conducted to check suitability of mortar.

1. Adhesiveness to surface
2. Action against external agencies water ,air, sunlight etc are to be
conducted.
3. More specification about tests to be conducted are given in IS
2542(method of tests for gypsum plaster, concrete and products)
4. IS :2547 (PART -1) specification for gypsum building plaster ,this
code cover all criteria like physical , chemical requirement,
determination of soluble sodium salts and magnesium salts,
determination of free lime etc are covered.
