CRITÉRIOS DE CORRECÇÃO DO 1º EXAME

DE INGLÊS III
24 DE JULHO DE 2007-08-07

1. Scientists issued a warning last April concerning climate change and the urgent
need for the world to adapt to its effects, as billions of dollars and a heavy toll in
human suffering were at stake.
2. They think that measures to adapt to climate change, such as the building of sea
defences, and the development of new forms of agriculture should take priority
over efforts to reduce greenhouse gases, because the latter would take much longer
to produce any effect, and the world is in need of immediate action regarding
natural threats.
3. According to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as
many as 50m people might become refugees by 2010, due to climate change.
4. Actions to help poor countries come to terms with rising temperatures, rising sea
levels, and an increase in storms, droughts and floods should be put underway to
reduce the number of future refugees, and thus minimize the risks of serious
conflicts arising from excessive numbers of homeless people.
5. Although, as Mr Yvo de Boer said, it is difficult to estimate an accurate figure, it is
believed that those measures would amount to many billions of dollars. However,
the private sector might be able to fund those actions, as this would mean a new
chance to develop their business. In Africa alone, for instance, adapting to climate
change would cost at least 5 to ten per cent of the GDP.
6. The situation is dramatic, and measures need to be taken urgently, or else we will
find ourselves in dire straits, trying to lead our lives in the midst of chaos and
disorganization. Both poor and rich countries need to prepare for the impending
events, and it is essential that the latter help the former in this process; otherwise,
we shall all suffer the consequences of this lack of solidarity. It is only by keeping
one step ahead of events that we can overcome or survive disaster. Are we doing
enough to prepare? That may be the question we need to ask.
