Grade Level: 8th grade
Time Frame: 30 minutes
Lesson Plan: The real number system
Instructional Objective (Measurable)
Students be able to describe and approximate the real numbers system that are
rational, irrational, fractions, decimals, integers, whole numbers, and natural
numbers by completing worksheets in a group activity that includes finding order a
set of real numbers arising from mathematical and real-world contexts with 10
questions with 80% accuracy.
Rationale
It is very important for students to know about real numbers, because they will use
real numbers in their everyday life to measure quantiles, distance, weights, and
duration of time.
Materials
4-5 14x14 white dry erase boards.

The teacher will use the dry erase board to lecture about the real numbers system.
The teacher reviews the definitions and examples of real, rational, irrational,
integers, whole, and natural numbers on the dry erase board. Students will work in
small groups and collaborate to solve their worksheets.
Students will walk into the classroom and pick up their materials that they need for
the lesson, which include:
The students are expected to listen and follow the teacher’s instruction about the
lesson.
Capture Attention: Ask students (1) what are real numbers? (2) Do you use real
numbers in your everyday life?
Prior Background Knowledge Needed (Prerequisite Skills)
Teaching Procedure
Engage
To capture students’ attention, by asking productive and essential questions “What
real numbers did you use yesterday and today? How many times did you use real
numbers last week?” Then inform students how important that real numbers play in
their everyday life, by giving examples how to use real numbers.
(1) They can use real numbers, when buying merchandise and getting change
back.
(2) Calculating the miles per gallon that their vehicle is using.
(3) In sports: In football, a runner can calculate the total number of yards of
rushing per carry. In basketball, a player can calculate the percentage of free
throws made.
Students be able to describe and approximate the real number system that are
rational, irrational, fractions, decimals, integers, whole numbers, and natural
numbers by completing worksheets in a group activity with 10 questions with 80%
accuracy.
Explore
Provide adequate time for students to interact and collaborate in small group
activities in solving their real number system worksheet problems.

Closure
In closing the lesson, I will review the real number system with the students, by
defining real, rational, irrational, fractions, decimals, integers, whole, and natural
numbers and the use of the real number system in their day to day experiences.
Ask the students if they have any questions about the lesson.
Explain the use of the real number system in STEM related fields.
What STEM related field would you choose and enjoying use real numbers?
