Name: Anthony Machac

Date: 10/7/2018
Number of students: 25
Grade Level: 8th grade
Time Frame: 30 minutes
Lesson Plan: The real number system
Instructional Objective (Measurable)

Students be able to describe and approximate the real numbers system that are
rational, irrational, fractions, decimals, integers, whole numbers, and natural
numbers by completing worksheets in a group activity that includes finding order a
set of real numbers arising from mathematical and real-world contexts with 10
questions with 80% accuracy.

TEKS (Include only those that are directly evaluated in lesson)

§111.28. Math Grade 8

(2) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process

standards to represent and use real numbers in a variety of forms. The
student is expected to:

(A) extend previous knowledge of sets and subsets using a visual

representation to describe relationships between sets of real
numbers.

(D) order a set of real numbers arising from mathematical and

real-world contexts.

Rationale
It is very important for students to know about real numbers, because they will use
real numbers in their everyday life to measure quantiles, distance, weights, and
duration of time.

Materials
4-5 14x14 white dry erase boards.

4-5 worksheets for students

Use a dry erase board.

4-5 dry erase markers.

4-5 black dry erase markers.

Getting Ready for the Lesson

Before the Lesson

 Predetermine the number of students of each group.

 Make sure there enough worksheets for each number of the group
 Make sure there are enough 14x14 dry erase boards for each student.
Room Arrangement
 The students desk will be arranged in 5 clusters that contain 5 student each.
 Each cluster will be arranged in groups that will allow students have a good
view of the dry erase board.
 Students will turn their completed worksheets in, by handing them to the
teacher.

Lesson Cycle flow

The teacher will use the dry erase board to lecture about the real numbers system.
The teacher reviews the definitions and examples of real, rational, irrational,
integers, whole, and natural numbers on the dry erase board. Students will work in
small groups and collaborate to solve their worksheets.

Students will walk into the classroom and pick up their materials that they need for
the lesson, which include:

 Dry erase makers and erasers

 Dry ease boards
 Real number worksheets

The students are expected to listen and follow the teacher’s instruction about the
lesson.

Capture Attention: Ask students (1) what are real numbers? (2) Do you use real
numbers in your everyday life?
Prior Background Knowledge Needed (Prerequisite Skills)

Students are expected to describe and approximate by using rational numbers,

integers, wholes, and natural numbers in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division.

Teaching Procedure

5E (Be sure to include elements of inquiry for better 5E science plan)

Engage
To capture students’ attention, by asking productive and essential questions “What
real numbers did you use yesterday and today? How many times did you use real
numbers last week?” Then inform students how important that real numbers play in
their everyday life, by giving examples how to use real numbers.

(1) They can use real numbers, when buying merchandise and getting change
back.
(2) Calculating the miles per gallon that their vehicle is using.
(3) In sports: In football, a runner can calculate the total number of yards of
rushing per carry. In basketball, a player can calculate the percentage of free
throws made.

Students be able to describe and approximate the real number system that are
rational, irrational, fractions, decimals, integers, whole numbers, and natural
numbers by completing worksheets in a group activity with 10 questions with 80%
accuracy.

Explore

Provide adequate time for students to interact and collaborate in small group
activities in solving their real number system worksheet problems.

Observe and listen to students’ interaction during their group activity.

Explain

Students/students collaboration in defining real numbers, rational, irrational,

integers, whole, and natural numbers. Students will write a short paragraph using
real numbers that are relate to their activities and their real-life experiences.

Extend

Encourage students to explore the use of real numbers in Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related fields that are high paying jobs, by
using the technology of I-phones and a secure web-site.
Evaluate
Students be able to determine and approximate the real number system of rational,
irrational, fractions, decimals, integers, whole numbers, and natural numbers by
completing a worksheet quiz with 10 questions with 80% accuracy.

Closure
In closing the lesson, I will review the real number system with the students, by
defining real, rational, irrational, fractions, decimals, integers, whole, and natural
numbers and the use of the real number system in their day to day experiences.

Ask the students if they have any questions about the lesson.

Specific Key Questions

How do you distinguish between whole and natural numbers?

How would you summarize the real number system?

Explain the use of the real number system in STEM related fields.

What STEM related field would you choose and enjoying use real numbers?

Modifications

Students that are ELLs and Special Education, I will provide a graphic organizer to
help students to learn and give additional time to learn the lesson.

Reflection on Lesson Development

The 5E teaching procedure provides teachers with an organized plan in getting
students to learn, by motivating students to engage in the lesson and by student
interaction in solving problems. It provides the teacher with the method to observe
what students are learning during the lesson, by explaining what they have learned
on worksheets or group activities. This allows the teacher to reteach certain parts of
the lesson. It provides a method to extend the content of the lesson outside the
classroom that is related to experiences. It also provides a method to evaluate
students knowledge of the lesson.
