SECTION 09900 - PAINTING

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

This section includes preparing, priming, painting, varnish and staining


decorative and high performance coating systems as shown on the
drawings and schedules including, but not limited to the following:

A. See interior design drawings and schedules for interior design painting.

B. Painting of interior and exterior exposed surfaces indicated on drawings


or schedules as painted.

C. Painting of exposed exterior and interior primed, unprimed and


galvanized ferrous metal, including architectural and structural work
except where final finishes are described in other specification sections.

D. Painting exposed bare and covered pipes and ducts (including color
coding), hangers, exposed steel and iron work, and primed metal surface
of mechanical and electrical equipment.

E. Application of masonry sealer where scheduled.

F. Painting of interior of ductwork or other surfaces visible through


registers, grilles, radiator or convector covers and other openings in
painted spaces with flat back paint.

G. Painting of exposed wood not finished under other sections.

H. Painting of Primed Finish Hardware (USP), door checks, brackets, steel


butts and like items.

I. Coded pipe identification including laboratory runout services.

J. Repair of existing prime and surface finishes disturbed or damaged


during building operations.

1.04 DEFINITIONS

O. "Exposed", as used to define surfaces to be painted, shall mean surfaces exposed to


view in any accessible space, area or enclosure including both sides of doors, panels,
access doors and covers, and shall include exterior exposed surfaces.

P. Paint exposed surfaces whether or not colors are designated in "schedules", except
where a surface or material is specifically indicated not to be painted or is to remain
natural. Where an item or surface is not specifically mentioned, paint the same as
similar adjacent materials or surfaces. If color or finish is not designated, the
Engineer will select from standard colors or finishes available.

Q. "Paint or Painting", as used herein, shall include various coating systems and materials
such as primers, emulsions, enamels, stains, sealers and fillers, and other applied
materials whether used as prime, intermediate or finish coats.

1.05 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300: Submittals.

B. Product Data: Provide data on all finishing products.

C. Samples: Submit two samples, 300x300 mm in size illustrating selected colors and
textures for each color selected.

D. Manufacturer'sInstructions: Indicate special surface preparation procedures,


substrate conditions requiring special attention.

E. Detailed Painting Schedule: Submit a "Detailed Painting Schedule" for review by


the Engineer. Prepare this schedule on the basis of the surfaces, types of paint
materials, number of coats required, and list the

F. Color Samples: Submit two (2) labeled 300 mm square samples for each color and
texture to simulate actual conditions. Show various stages of finish on displays.

1.06 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. General Painting
1. Paint exposed surfaces, except where the paint schedules indicate that a surface
or material is not to be painted or is to remain natural. If the paint schedules
do not specifically mention an item or a surface, paint the item or surface
the same as similar adjacent materials or surfaces whether or not schedules

indicate colors. If the schedules do not indicate color or finish, the Architect
will select from standard colors and finishes available.

2. Do not paint prefinished items, concealed surfaces, finished metal surfaces, operating
parts, and labels.

3. Paint: Paint systems materials, including primers, emulsions, enamels,


stains, sealers and fillers, and other applied materials whether used as
prime, intermediate or finish coats, and of various degrees of opacity or
sheen.

4. Minimum Dry Film Thickness (MDFT or DFT): Specified by


minimum dry film thickness in millimeters, per coat. Where manufacturer’s
recommendations require greater dry film thicknesses, or if no MDFT is
specified, follow manufacturer’s recommendations.
B. Decorative Polychromatic Particle Coating
1. Special paint system is a texture tone-on-tone spray-on coating used
primarily to finish wall/ceiling surfaces.
2. Field Sample Panels: Prepare sample test application for Engineer’s review
and to establish requirements for finish color, texture, and pattern.
a. Correct areas, modify method of applications, or adjust finish texture
as directed by Engineer or testing laboratory to comply with
requirements specified herein.
b. Maintain field sample panels accessible throughout the entire
application time period to serve as a standard of quality for this
Section.

c. Field sample shall consist of the following:


1. Panel size: Not less than 1 meter square panel of each color.

2. Indicate colors, particle sizes, patterns, and coverages.

C. High Performance Coating Systems

1. Mock-up or Field Samples: Prepare Mock-ups or Field Samples for


Engineer’s review and to establish requirements for ratings and
finish texture.
a. Correct areas, modify method of application/installation, or adjust
finish texture as directed by Engineer to comply with specified
requirements.

b. Maintain mock-ups and field sample accessible to serve as a


standard of quality for this Section.

c. Sample shall consist of the following:

1. On wall surfaces and other exterior and interior components,


duplicate finishes of prepared samples. Provide full-coat finish
samples on at least 9m² of surface until required sheen, color and
texture are obtained; simulate finished lighting conditions for review
of in-place work.

1.06 QUALIFICATIONS

A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing the Products


specified in this section with minimum three five years documented
experience.

B. Applicator: Company specializing in performing the work of this section


with minimum five years experience.

1.07 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

A. Conform to applicable code for flame and smoke rating requirements for
finishes.

1.08 FIELD SAMPLES

A. Provide field sample of paint under provisions of Section 01400: Quality


Control.

B. Provide field sample panel, 3 m long or 10 m² of each paint type,


illustrating coating color, texture, and finish.

C. Locate where directed.

D. Accepted sample may remain as part of the Work.

1.09 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver, store, protect and handle products to site under provisions of


Section 01600: Material and Equipment.

B. Deliver paint materials to the job site in original containers and packages,

bearing the manufacturer's labels, indicating name, type, brand, contents


by volume, for pigment, vehicle and volatile constituents. Unless
otherwise directed by the Engineer, deliver paints ready-mixed. Order in
advance in large enough quantities and in ample time to facilitate the
Work.

C. Container label to include manufacturer's name, type of paint, brand


name, lot number, brand code, coverage, surface preparation, drying time,
cleanup requirements, color designation, and instructions for mixing and
reducing.

D. Store paint materials at minimum ambient temperature of 45 degrees F (7


degrees C) and a maximum of 90 degrees F (32 degrees C), in ventilated
area, and as required by manufacturer's instructions.

1.10 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Do not apply materials when surface and ambient temperatures are


outside the temperature ranges required by the paint product
manufacturer.

B. Do not apply exterior coatings when relative humidity is outside the


humidity ranges required by the paint product manufacturer.

C. Minimum Application Temperatures for Latex Paints: 7 degrees C for


interiors; 10 degrees C for exterior; unless required otherwise by
manufacturer's instructions.

E. Provide lighting level of 860 lux measured mid-height at substrate


surface.

1.11 EXTRA MATERIALS

A. Furnish under provisions of Section 01700: Contract Closeout.

B. Provide 10 liters of each color, type, and surface texture to Owner.

C. Label each container with color, type, texture, room locations, in addition
to the manufacturer's label.

2.01 MATERIALS

FOR PAINTING

A. Wood Door, Casework and Cabinets, and Trim

1. Wood Stain: Penetrating oil-based wood stain.

1. Wood Trim - Medium-Shade, Semigloss, Acrylic-Enamel Finish: 2


finish coats over a primer. First and Second Coats consisting of
semigloss, waterborne, exterior, acrylic-latex enamel applied at
spreading rate recommended by the manufacturer to achieve a total
dry film thickness of not less than 0.061 mm.

2. Wood Trim - Medium-Shade, Full-Gloss, Alkyd-Enamel Finish: 2


finish coats over a primer. First and Second Coats consisting of
medium-shade, full-gloss, exterior, ready-mixed, alkyd/oil enamel
applied at spreading rate recommended by the manufacturer to
achieve a total dry film thickness of not less than 0.076 mm.

B. Paint systems for gypsum board or plaster

1. Latex Primer for Gypsum Board. Latex-based, interior primer
applied at spreading rate recommended by the manufacturer to
achieve a total dry film thickness of not less than 0.031 mm.

3. Interior Latex Primer-Sealer (for gypsum board or plaster) (MDFT


0.02mm):

4. Flat Acrylic Finish for Gypsum Board or Plaster: 2 finish coats over
a primer consisting of first and second coats of flat, acrylic-latex-
based, interior paint applied at spreading rate recommended by the

thickness of not less than 0.071 mm.

FOR DECORATIVE POLYCHROMATIC PARTICLE COATING

A.Decorative High Build Polychromatic Coating: Polychromatic coating


consisting of a combination of separate pigmented color particles suspended
in a chemically treated aqueous solution.

GENERAL

A. Coatings: Ready mixed, except field catalyzed coatings. Process


pigments to a soft paste consistency, capable of being readily and
uniformly dispersed to a homogeneous coating; good flow and brushing
properties; capable of drying or curing free of streaks or sags.

B. Use products of the same manufacturer for succeeding coats. Where


primer is shop applied to steel, subsequent coats may be the product of
another manufacturer provided the coatings are mutually compatible.

compatibility of the total systems for various substrates.

C. Colors, textures and degree of luster will be as selected by the Engineer.


Tint prime and undercoats approximately to the shade of the final coat
but with sufficient variation to distinguish them from the preceding coat.
Proprietary names used to designate colors or materials are not intended
to imply that products named are required or to exclude equal products of
other manufacturers.
D. Specular Gloss Range

2. In locations where ambient temperature-humidity conditions


encourage the ready formation of mildew, use paints with additional
mildew inhibitive agent incorporate during the manufacturing

process, of type and in concentration recommended by the paint


manufacturer to withstand such mildew formation.
E. Accessory Materials: Linseed oil, shellac, turpentine, paint thinners and
other materials not specifically indicated but required to achieve the
finishes specified, of commercial quality.
F. Patching Materials: Latex filler.
G. Fastener Head Cover Materials: Latex filler.
Refer to finishes schedule colors to be chosen from manufacturers range
and samples.

2.02 PAINT COLORS

A. Paint Colors: Earth tones (white, beige, buff, tan and brown) as selected
by Engineer.

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Verify site conditions under provisions of Section 01039: Coordination


and Meetings.

B. Verify that surfaces substrate conditions are ready to receive work as


instructed by the product manufacturer.

C. Examine surfaces scheduled to be finished prior to commencement of


work. Report any condition that may potentially affect proper
application.

D. Test shop applied primer for compatibility with subsequent cover


materials.

E. Measure moisture content of surfaces using an electronic moisture meter.


Do not apply finishes unless moisture content of surfaces are below the
following maximums:
1. Plaster and Gypsum Wallboard: 12 percent.
2. Masonry, Concrete, and Concrete Unit Masonry: 12 percent.
3. Interior Wood: 15 percent, measured in accordance with ASTM
D2016.
4. Exterior Wood: 15 percent, measured in accordance with ASTM
D2016.
5. Concrete Floors: 8 percent.

3.02 PREPARATION

A. Remove or mask electrical plates, hardware, light fixture trim,


escutcheons, and fittings prior to preparing surfaces or finishing.

B. Correct defects and clean surfaces which affect work of this section.
Remove existing coatings that exhibit loose surface defects.

C. Seal with shellac and seal marks which may bleed through surface
finishes.

D. Impervious Surfaces: Remove mildew by scrubbing with solution of


tri-sodium phosphate and bleach. Rinse with clean water and allow
surface to dry.

E. Aluminum Surfaces Scheduled for Paint Finish: Remove surface


contamination by steam or high pressure water. Remove oxidation with
acid etch and solvent washing. Apply etching primer immediately
following cleaning.

F. Asphalt, Creosote, or Bituminous Surfaces Scheduled for Paint Finish:


Remove foreign particles to permit adhesion of finishing materials.
Apply latex based compatible sealer or primer.

G. Insulated Coverings: Remove dirt, grease, and oil from canvas and
cotton.

H. Concrete Floors: Remove contamination, acid etch, and rinse floors with
clear water. Verify required acid-alkali balance is achieved. Allow to
dry.

I. Copper Surfaces Scheduled for a Paint Finish: Remove contamination by


steam, high pressure water, or solvent washing. Apply vinyl etch primer
immediately following cleaning.

J. Copper Surfaces Scheduled for a Natural Oxidized Finish: Remove


contamination by applying oxidizing solution of copper acetate and
ammonium chloride in acetic acid. Rub on repeatedly for required effect.
Once attained, rinse surfaces with clear water and allow to dry.

K. Gypsum Board Surfaces: Fill minor defects with filler compound. Spot
prime defects after repair.

L. Galvanized Surfaces: Remove surface contamination and oils and wash


with solvent. Apply coat of etching primer.

M. Concrete and Unit Masonry Surfaces Scheduled to Receive Paint Finish:


Remove dirt, loose mortar, scale, salt or alkali powder, and other foreign
matter. Remove oil and grease with a solution of tri-sodium phosphate;
rinse well and allow to dry. Remove stains caused by weathering of
corroding metals with a solution of sodium metasilicate after thoroughly
wetting with water. Allow to dry.

L. Plaster Surfaces: Fill hairline cracks, small holes, and imperfections with
latex patching plaster. Make smooth and flush with adjacent surfaces.
Wash and neutralize high alkali surfaces.

N. Uncoated Steel and Iron Surfaces: Remove grease, mill scale, weld
splatter, dirt, and rust. Where heavy coatings of scale are evident,
remove by hand power tool wire brushing or sandblasting; clean by
washing with solvent. Apply a treatment of phosphoric acid solution,
ensuring weld joints, bolts, and nuts are similarly cleaned. Spot prime
paint after repairs.

O. Shop Primed Steel Surfaces: Sand and scrape to remove loose primer
and rust. Feather edges to make touch-up patches inconspicuous. Clean
surfaces with solvent. Prime bare steel surfaces. Prime metal items
including shop primed items.

P. Interior Wood Items Scheduled to Receive Paint Finish: Wipe off dust
and grit prior to priming. Seal knots, pitch streaks, and sappy sections
with sealer. Fill nail holes and cracks after primer has dried; sand
between coats.

Q. Interior Wood Items Scheduled to Receive Transparent Finish: Wipe off


dust and grit prior to sealing, seal knots, pitch streaks, and sappy sections
with sealer. Fill nail holes and cracks after sealer has dried; sand lightly
between coats.

R. Exterior Wood Scheduled to Receive Paint Finish: Remove dust, grit,

T. Wood and Metal Doors Scheduled for Painting: Seal top and bottom

3.03 APPLICATION

A. Apply products in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B. Do not apply finishes to surfaces that are not dry.

C. Apply each coat to uniform finish.

D. Apply each coat of paint slightly darker than preceding coat unless
otherwise approved.

E. Sand wood and metal lightly between coats to achieve required finish.

F. Vacuum clean surfaces free of loose particles. Use tack cloth just prior to

interior areas.

C. Remove unfinished louvers, grilles, covers, and access panels on


mechanical and electrical components and paint separately.

D. Prime and paint insulated and exposed pipes, conduit, boxes, insulated
and exposed ducts, hangers, brackets, collars and supports, except where
items are prefinished.

E. Paint interior surfaces of air ducts that are visible through grilles and
louvers with one coat of flat black paint, to visible surfaces. Paint
dampers exposed behind louvers and grilles to match face panels.

F. Paint exposed conduit and electrical equipment occurring in finished


areas.

G. Paint both sides and edges of plywood backboards for electrical and
telephone equipment before installing equipment.

H. Color code equipment, piping, conduit, and exposed duct work in


accordance with requirements indicated. color schedule. Color band and
identify with flow arrows names and numbering.

I. Reinstall electrical cover plates, hardware, light fixture trim, escutcheons,


and fittings removed prior to finishing.

3.05 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
