INGENIERIA EN PETROLEOS

TRATAMIENTO Y MANTENIMIENTO
DE AGUAS DE PRODUCCION

Why is there water in the formations?

At the moment that a well begins its production, you get three fluids such as water, gas and
mainly oil; this oil is mostly associated with water since this water is trapped during the
geological process of deposition of sediments or by the existence of groundwater that is
connected to the reservoir or by migration from another formation. There are several
reasons why water is present in the reservoir, if everything would depend on the conditions
in which the geological process occurred.

This formation water can be very harmful because its high content of salts and certain
amounts of oil in dilution make it not consumable or used for any other work without having
gone through a process of treatment of production waters, but its high cost makes this
process very difficult. The salt content is very dependent on the deposit environment since
they can be of two marine or lacustrine types, the latter being where the water tends to
have less salinity.

This water, occupies the spaces between the sediments that were left on the bottoms of
oceans and ancient lakes, and could remain there since the disappearance of these or simply
to have flowed there.

By exploiting the wells, the formation water changes its pressure and temperature
conditions, and the collisions with the pipe walls act as a demulsifier between the formation
water and the petroleum oil, forming a reverse emulsion of water in oil.

The most common use that is given to this formation water is to re-inject it into the
formation in order to increase the production of oil, but one must take into account each
and every one of the properties of this water since it is highly corrosive and it could also
migrate to other adjacent formations that in the worst case could damage this formation.

It is important to know the porous media through which it crossed, since at the moment of
wanting to treat or separate this water from formation of oil, this is very important to know
which method of separation is adequate to treat the formation water. In addition, this
treatment must follow certain rules since there is legislation for the management of such
waters and is something that must be taken into account.
