Additional Course Expectations and Policies

Assignments and Homework:

You will be given regular assignments and homework to aid in the writing
process.

Late Work Policy

I do not accept late short assignments. They are due in class, printed or online
before class starts. There are 15 of them, so that comes out to 1.5% of your grade
for each assignment.

If you cannot submit a major written assignment on time or need an extension,

please schedule an appointment to meet with me in person. No exceptions. Ideally, They Say I Say is a very well-

be reading a couple chapters.
If you miss an in-class peer review or writing workshop day without prior consent,
you will lose one point on your “writing process” score on your final paper. See the
course rubrics. One point comes out to almost 7% of your final paper grade.

“Oops Pass”
I only accept ONE late homework assignment/class activity pass per semester. Let
me know the assignment/activity you are applying it to. No questions asked!
Bonus Points! If you do not use your ONE “Oops Pass” during the semester you
may use it during the last week of class to raise your over all course grade by 2%
points. Yep! That means if you were at an 88% at the end of the course that you This is the required courebook

Writing Feedback Policy

Because the only way to become a better writer is by addressing reader
critiques and suggestions, there is heavy weight put on the “writing process” in
this course.

Revision Policy

I will accept one additional revised paper accepted at any point prior to the last day of scheduled classes
(before finals week) for a higher grade. In order to take this option, students must create a revision plan and
meet with me during office hours to discuss their plan. They must also go to the Writing Center and have a
writing center tutorial.

E-mail Response Time

I most always respond to e-mails within 24 hours, so please keep that in mind when you are communicating
with me via e-mail. The same rules of professionalism apply to all e-mail communicating—when you e-mail
me, be professional, let me know who you are and what class section you are in, let me know what you are
asking about in clear terms. I generally do not accept any files via e-mail. You can submit them online via

Canvas.

Class Cancellations
On the rare occasion that I may have to cancel a class, I will send and e-mail to your MiraCosta e-mail
address on file with SURF. A note outside of the classroom door may also be posted. I do not cancel class for
one-on-one or small group conferences. You are still required to come to class and work on your writing and
help your classmates while writing conferences are going on. I will try to make sure that each of you have a
writing conference meeting during class time at some point in the semester, but some of you may have your
conference before or after class, or at another scheduled time.

Academic Integrity/Incomplete Grade

MiraCosta College highly values academic integrity. At the core, this means an honest representation of
one’s own work. MiraCosta College also promotes the approach that education is best accomplished as a

cooperative, collaborative enterprise in which students are encouraged to work with and learn from each
other. The line between academic integrity and collaborative education is not always easy to define and may
vary from one discipline to the next and from one instructor to the next. Many aspects of cheating and
plagiarism are universally recognized, while others are subject to debate. This policy provides some broad,
general guidelines and allows instructors to be more restrictive according to their preferences and
practices. Examples of academic dishonesty include but are not limited to:
Cheating: Copying from another student or using unauthorized aids or persons during an examination.
Plagiarizing: Copying someone else’s work or ideas and misrepresenting them as one’s own.
Falsification: Making up fictitious information and presenting it as factual or altering records for the
purpose of misrepresentation.
Facilitation: Helping another student to cheat, plagiarize, or falsify.
Remedies for violations of academic integrity may include a verbal warning, a lowered assignment grade,
submission of an academic integrity report to the Vice President, Student Services, or designee (for
placement into the student’s permanent discipline file), or a recommendation to the Vice President, Student
Services, for suspension from the class for repeated or egregious offenses at the discretion of the instructor.
Instructors may consult with the Vice President, Student Services, for identification of appropriate remedies

per state statutes and codes. (See Administrative Procedure 5500, Standards of Student Conduct, and 5520,
Student Disciplines Procedures.)
Incomplete Grade Students seeking an “Incomplete” grade must consult with me no later than the week
prior to finals (you may wish to specify a date within this week). Incompletes will only be considered for
unforeseeable, emergency and justifiable reasons at the end of the term, and only upon agreement of
conditions for completing coursework.

Disability Accommodations
If you have a hidden or visible disability, which may require classroom or test accommodations, please see
me as soon as possible during a scheduled office hour. If you have not already done so, please register with

Major and Minor Writing Assignments

Weekly Time Expectations
According to the English department official course outline, “You will spend a weekly average of four to
eight hours of out-of-class time composing formal projects, such as expository or researched essays,
multimodal projects, or blogs/online writing developed through multiple drafts and revisions. Other
informal writing activities may include activities such as journals, quick writes, brainstorms, or peer
comments on drafts and blogs.”
“EXPECT to be CHALLENGED with 3-4 hours of weekly reading and 4-8 hours of weekly writing. Essay
prompts will demand complex, multipage responses that may invite you to break free from the “five
paragraph” essay and adopt more flexible, logical structures for your ideas.”

Major Writing Assignments

*All Major Assignments must be completed to qualify for a passing grade in this course.

Project 1: Narrative Essay and College and Literacy Action Plan Letter
You will work on two long-term papers in two different genres with several rounds of revision
and editing. Both pieces of writing will be submitted for a final score together as one final
piece. First you will write a narrative piece to naysayers (real or imagined) who believe college
is not for everyone or people who have been obstacles to your college endeavors. You might
also choose to write about a story of success you have had on your journey to college or about
your first day or week of college. Second, you will write a persuasive letter to yourself with an
action plan for college and literacy success.

Project 2: Rhetorical Analysis Paper
You will write an analysis paper comparing and contrasting two advertisements of the same
product/service. This paper you will be focused on analyzing how advertisers are using
rhetorical appeals in different or similar ways to sell a product to an audience. You will also be
required to give a short argument about why your analysis is important to an audience of
impulse buyers (real or imagined).

Project 3: Discourse Community Persuasive Paper
You will step into the world of a linguist to analyze the characteristics of a discourse
community that you are a part of. Based upon your analysis, you will then make an argument
about the most valued rhetorical appeal in your community. This is a persuasive piece of
academic writing that convinces a well-known linguist that you are indeed a true member and
expert of the community that you are describing. This paper fulfills the required “Lens
Assignment” that takes place in every English 100 course at MiraCosta and will be used for
program assessment.

Project 4: Research on Writing Genres in a Future Workplace
You will write a research paper describing important or common genres of writing in your
future workplace. This paper will require both a formal in-person interview (primary source
documentation) and library database research (secondary source documentation).

If I miss class…

1. I will contact my classmates before the next class and

get notes/homework/learn about what we did in class.

2. I will not ask Marie to review what we did last class. I
will go to her office hours to talk to her in-person.

I will have to make up in-class writing tasks on my own

I will receive a grade of zero for participation and any

If I am going to miss a major event in class, such as a
