CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL OVERVIEW AND CONCEPT OF THE STUDY

‘Healthcare’ is the maintenance and improvement of physical and social health through the
provision of medical services. Therefore healthcare management system is the mechanism
involved is the process of maintaining and enhancing physical and mental health problems through
online medical services. (Adapted from lucky faith).

Healthcare management system develops information technology solutions for community

hospitals and specialty healthcare facilities. Healthcare applications are specially designed for the
unique challenges facing many hospitals.

Healthcare psychology is based on a biological, psychological, sociological medical model. If

people can assess themselves, capture their own health information, find patterns and habits and
make increase, they can alter their health and increase the like hood of wellness and prevention. If
individuals choose to report information to their physicians, even if they are armed with
information about themselves, their physicians are slim.

Physicians are well aware that most individuals lack the medical knowledge to communicate their
issues meaningfully to them. Physicians are under a great deal of pressure to make a diagnosis in
the shortest possible time and are also aware that there are other individuals awaiting their care.
Because of this pressure, and because physicians do not expect to receive much information from
individuals without being prompted individuals will have on average, only 12 seconds before they
are interrupted by their physicians.

With such factors taken into consideration, it is increasingly difficult for physicians to make
accurate, timely and cost-effective diagnosis for the individuals in their care and for their patients
to ‘buy into” their treatment plans.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

Due to imperfect human nature, there has been problems or issues related to this research topic;
Online health care management system or solution. They are as follows: there is no work
efficiency; cost of healthcare services becomes higher, conflicts between health care professionals
relating to their exact responsibilities, unsatisfied customer, as well as poor quality in delivering
the services, miscommunication, poor quality, waiting times, the insufficient access of the
resources.

1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research work will aid health systems in the case study to achieve the following in
other to improve and secure the healthcare Information System;
 Maintain a database for all registered patient’s for a hospital.
 Acquire process and store patient’s information or data including record of last inspection
and prescription data on each patient’s smart card.
 Keep record of patient’s healthcare data on professional’s smart card.
 Access to accurate health data quickly.

1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

The main aim for this study is: “to develop an efficient health care management system”. To
achieve the main aim, several objectives have been drawn as follows:

 To capture existing knowledge about health care as well as effort that have been put to
improves current health care information system in Nigeria.
 To develop a program of information systems integration care and health care.
 To produce efficient healthcare information systems that will enhance healthcare services.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY:

This research will only focus healthcare management sectors, which focus on proffering
solution to some malaria symptoms. There are many symptoms of malaria like; yellowing of eyes
and body etc, diagnosis and prescription. Since the research is focusing more on information for
health care management.
1.6 RESEARCH METHODOLGY

A thorough investigation of functional requirement of the present system and finding out
whether the requirements and objective of the system are being achieved was made in order to
obtain detailed facts about the application area to be re-designed. Direct observation and
examination of documents were carried out.

This involves method use for sourcing data and the programming language used in this project;

 Primary source: This involves the use of interview and observation method for data
collection. Some staffs of the case study were interviewed in his/her office in order to know the
procedure of current method and its problems.
 Secondary Source: This involves the use of internet materials. Information gotten are
about GIS, Longitude, latitude etc

The programming language used for this project is Visual Basic 6.0 and the database used is
Microsoft Access 2007.

1.7 DEFINITIONS OF TERMS:

 Health issues: the term health means the condition of a person’s body or mind, while, issues

 Healthcare: the maintenance and improvement of physical and mental health through the
provision of medical services.
 Management: is the process of combing and coordinating a range of resources.
 System: a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting
network.
