Introduction

(informative)
A.1 Principe
A.2 Appareillage
A.3 Éprouvettes
produise.

Introduction
This draft European standard is based on ASTM D 5494-93 Standard test method for the determination of pyramid
puncture resistance of unprotected and protected geomembranes.
1 Scope
This draft European standard specifies an index test method to determine the pyramid puncture resistance of a
geosynthetic on a rigid support. This method simulates a geosynthetic’s efficiency in protecting a geosynthetic
barrier or other contact surface against sharp rigid elements under short term loading.
Annex A (informative) specifies a test method which could be applicable to soft support.
2 Normative references
This European Standard incorporates by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These
normative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text and the publications are listed hereafter. For
dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this European
Standard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references the latest edition of the
publication referred to applies.
EN ISO 12 236 Geotextiles and geotextile-related products – Static puncture test (CBR-Test)
ISO 845 Cellular plastics and rubbers -- Determination of apparent (bulk) density
ISO 7500-1 Metallic materials -- Verification of static uniaxial testing machines -- Part 1:
Tension/compression testing machines -- Verification and calibration of the
force-measuring system
For the purposes of this European Standard, the following definitions apply:
3.1
puncture load
The load of the piston as it is pushed onto the test specimen at a constant rate of advance.
3.2
push-through load
The puncture load at failure, i.e. at the perforation of the geosynthetic, corresponding to the maximum load
recorded.
4
prEN 14574:2002 (E)
4 Principle
A test specimen lies flat on an aluminium plate supported by a steel base, secured in a tensile/compression testing
machine. A force is exerted on the centre of the test specimen by a pyramid-shaped solid steel piston, attached to
a load indicator, until perforation of the specimen occurs. The recorded push-through load is considered to be
representative for the protection efficiency of the specimen.
5 Apparatus
A suitable testing machine with a reading force accuracy according to ISO 7500-1 shall be used. The press shall be
able to maintain a constant test speed of the loading piston. A special piston and electric signal equipment for
determining the moment of push-through are the additional pieces of test equipment needed.
A 3 mm thick aluminium plate (AlMgSi1F32 DIN1745-1) is used as the underlying medium for this test method. The
aluminium plate simulates a hard, rigid support. It shall be placed on a steel base.
The loading piston shall be a cylinder with a diameter of (25 ± 0,1) mm with a polished and hardened
pyramid-shaped apex. The apex shall be a four sided pyramid with an apex angle of 90° rounded off with
a radius (R) of (0.5 ± 0.02) mm. The edges of the pyramid shall be rounded off with a radius of (0,5 ±
0,02) mm. The transitional edge from the base of the pyramid to the cylinder shall have a radius (R) of
(0,5 ± 0,1) mm.
An electrical circuit shall be placed between the loading piston and the underlying medium in order to determine the
puncture load at failure.
6 Specimens
6.1 Sampling
7 Conditioning
Condition the test specimens, and conduct the tests in the standard atmosphere as defined in ISO 554, i.e at a
relative humidity at (65 ± 5) % and a temperature of (20 ± 2) °C.
8 Procedure
Select the load range of the tensile/compression testing machine such that the rupture occurs between 10% and
90% of the full-scale load.
5
prEN 14574:2002 (E)
Lay the test specimen flat on the aluminium plate. Test at a machine speed of (1,0 ±0,1) mm/min until the puncture
load is registered by the electrical circuit between the loading piston and the aluminium plate.
The push-through load (in N) is expressed as the average of ten individual tests.

ANNEX A
(informative)
Test method with a soft support.
A.1 Principle
A resilient PU-foam (compressible foam which regains its original thickness after release of the load) is used as soft
support for this test method.
A test specimen is clamped without tension between circular plates of a clamp ring and attached securely in a
press or tensile testing machine. A force is exerted on the centre of the supported portion of the test specimen by a
solid steel pyramid attached to a load indicator until rupture of the specimen occurs. The recorded push-through
load and elongation are the parameters to determine the protection efficiency of the specimen.
A.2 Apparatus
CBR type presses according EN ISO 12 236 are normally equipped with a CBR-cylinder compression base of (150
± 0.5) mm diameter. Additionally, the compression base should be deep enough to allow the loading piston at least
a 150 mm travel length. The compression base should be manufactured of high-grade stainless steel.
Resilient PU-foam is used with a hardness of (13.6 2) kPa according to ISO 3386-1 and a density of (96 5)
kg/m³ according to ISO 845.
A flexible contact sheet with maximum diameter of 20 mm, placed directly beneath the pyramid piston should be
used.
A.3 Specimens
Cut ten test specimens from the sample, each of suitable dimensions for the apparatus used.
The test specimen for soft underlying PU-foam should allow suitable clamping. The sample is fixed between the
ring clamps so that no slippage occurs.
A.4 Procedure
Centre and secure the specimen between the clamp rings ensuring that the test specimen extends to or beyond the
outer arranged grooves of the clamp ring. Test at a machine speed of (50 ± 5) mm/min until perforation of the
specimen occurs. If the specimen slips in the clamps or if any reason attributed to faulty operation the result falls
markedly below the average for the set of specimens, discard the result and test another specimen. Continue until
the required number of acceptable breaks has been obtained. Measure the elongation at break of the specimen at
the same time as the puncture load is determined.
