CEG552 HIGHWAY & TRAFFIC ENGINEERING

PAVEMENT DISTRESS RATING

OPEN ENDED LAB LEVEL 3

PREAMBLE Introduction
Pavement distress refers to the condition of a pavement surface in terms
of its general appearance. A distressed pavement may be fractured,
distorted or disintegrated. Many highway agencies use some
procedures/methods in evaluating the condition of flexible pavement.
A pavement rating method uses the following distress elements in
evaluating the pavement condition: longitudinal or alligator cracking,
rutting, bleeding, raveling and patching. Each element is characterized
by (1) SEVERITY: not severe, severe or very severe; and (2)
FREQUENCY: none, rare, occasional or frequent. The categories for
frequency are based on the percentage of area affected by a particular
distress within the area of the section surveyed.
Objectives
This laboratory is designed to assist student in identifying and classifying
the types and level of pavement distress for road maintenance works.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this open ended lab, the students should be able to:
1. Identify the type of distress associated with pavement maintenance.
2. Analyze the level of pavement distress by rating the pavement
condition and propose suitable maintenance works.
3. Produce technical report
PROBLEM A periodical maintenance works must be carried out to ensure the level
STATEMENT of service is maintained at reasonable level and reducing the risk of
accidents due to poor road conditions. As an engineer attached to the
maintenance company, you are asked by the senior engineer to conduct
a survey on pavement distress along few major roads in UiTM Penang
campus, rate the pavement condition using a suitable method and
suggest on innovative of technology for the maintenance works.

WAYS & MEANS Apparatus

The group must identify the availability of the selected apparatus in the
lab before going to the site or location of the study.
Procedure
The group is required to search for the relevant procedure to carry out
the study based on the appropriate guideline or manual produced by
highway and traffic department in Malaysia. The document must be made
ready for verification by the instructor during the laboratory activity.
Data Acquisition
All data collected and observation during the study must be tabulate in
proper format for easy verification and presentation of the technical
report.

RESULTS The group is required to submit a technical report within two weeks to
present the maintenance study. In the report, you should include the
proper procedure, analysis of data and the outcome of the study.
