Chamada: Global and innovative solutions to climate change and its effects
on the economy and Society
Climate change is a scourge of our time, and its effects will be devastating if urgent measures are not taken.
The impact of climate change is already noticeable. Global temperatures are increasing, sea levels are rising,
and ice caps are melting. The economic and social impacts, which include impoverished health, reduced food
production, droughts, and extreme weather events, are no less serious.
Accordingly, climate change is a global problem from environmental, political, economic, and social
perspectives. From this perspective, this special issue will present papers that relate to, among others, the
following themes

Chamada: Technology-Driven Social Entrepreneurship and Social

Innovation
This issue seeks to inform and further Social Entrepreneurship (SE) in theory and practice by looking at it
from a technology angle. We invite submissions of high-quality academic research from a variety of
perspectives - following our guiding indicative topics below.

There are no methodological preferences – in-depth case studies, qualitative as well as quantitative
approaches are welcome - but all submissions will be peer-reviewed to ensure high academic rigour in their
conduct. Because of the novelty and high dynamics of this topic however, we particularly invite research that
is informed by practice and fieldwork. In addition, we plan for a workshop in Oxford in September 2019 to
provide further guidance and allow for interaction between the potential authors and with specially invited
technology-driven social entrepreneurs.

Call for Papers: Philanthropy & Social Impact

The USC Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy will mark the beginning of its 20th anniversary with a
research symposium that examines our understanding of the role of philanthropy in creating social impact.
The symposium will be held March 14-16, 2019 at the Sol Price School of Public Policy, which will be
celebrating its 90th anniversary and its long history of expertise on cross sector partnerships.
There has been a growing understanding of how philanthropy and nonprofit organizations can advance
social change through the development of impactful strategies and practices. The aim of the conference is to
take stock of intellectual developments and research contributions at the intersection of philanthropy,
nonprofits, and social innovation, and to assess the most promising avenues for future work. The symposium
will blend plenary sessions with leading contributors to the field with paper panels based on responses to this
Call for Papers.

It is a common assumption that at least until the middle of the 20th century philosophical exchange between
Europe and North-America has merely been a one-way street, with Europe on the giving side and North-
America on the receiving side of the relationship. In fact, early North-American philosophy is unthinkable
without European philosophical traditions. Already in the second half of the 19th century, however, a
genuinely philosophical school emerges in the United States – Pragmatism. Charles Sanders Peirce (1839–
1914) and William James (1842–1919) are its official founders. American Pragmatism’s impact on Europe in
remarkably quick. At the beginning of the 20th century, James is at the forefront of European engagements
with Pragmatism. From the 1920s onwards, John Dewey (1859–1952) – the third principal figure of
Pragmatism – dominates the reception. Today, the reception of American Pragmatism in Europe is stronger
than ever. It covers the whole range of Pragmatist thought, from philosophy to psychology, from
neuroscience to sociology and much more. Moreover, the pragmatist method has recently proven to be useful
for understanding mechanisms of oppression rooted in gender, ethnic and economic factors in ways that the
European context can much profit from.

Chamada: History, Memory, and the Past in Management and Organization

Studies
The historic turn (Clark & Rowlinson, 2004; Mills, Suddaby,Foster, & Durepos, 2016) has changed the
understanding of the role of time, history, and memory in management and organization studies (MOS).
After more than ten years, it is fair to say that history, memory, and the past have become important topics in
MOS. New concepts and approaches have emerged from the dialogue between management and history. In
strategy, a new field of research is emerging around concepts such as social memory assets (e.g., Foster,
Suddaby, Minkus, & Wiebe, 2011), and mnemonic capabilities (Coraiola, Suddaby, & Foster, 2017). In
marketing, there is a growing literature around heritage brands (e.g., Balmer, 2017). In entrepreneurship,
there has been research on entrepreneurial legacies (e.g., Jaskiewicz, Combs, & Rau, 2015). And corporate
social responsibility scholars are discussing social forgetting (Mena et al, 2016) and the historical
responsibility of managers and organization (Schrempf-Stirling, Palazzo, & Phillips, 2016). We invite

On Philanthropy

"Philanthropy in the Spotlight? Resources, Reputation and Achievements".

In recent years the public profile of philanthropy has increased. Across Europe (and beyond) philanthropic
actors take the lead in addressing societal issues and the contribution of philanthropy is being (re)discovered
by public actors. While philanthropy is not a new phenomenon, its heightened visibility has raised questions
about the background and motives of philanthropic organizations and donors, the place of philanthropy
within (European) welfare states, and the relationship of philanthropy to other actors that aim to solve
societal issues and/or put issues on the societal agenda. ERNOP welcomes papers addressing questions from
a micro- meso- and/or macro perspective and from questions addressing the background, contents and/or
output of philanthropy. Papers can be either empirical – using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed method
approaches – or theoretical.

The 4th edition of the International Conference on Public Policy (ICPP4) will take place at the University of

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at the University of Pittsburgh welcomes faculty and students
to the 23rd Latin American Social and Public Policy (LASPP) Conference. At the conference, researchers can
present their scholarly work related to social and public policy in Latin America.

Our team is focused on assuring a high-quality and open environment for the exchange of ideas and the
improvement of works in progress. Following the multidisciplinary tradition of CLAS, we are interested in
facilitating dialogue across disciplines, theoretical perspectives, and methodologies. In that spirit, we
encourage the organization of panels around problems, rather than disciplines, and welcome submissions

business-as-usual não é mais uma opção, observando o papel fundamental do setor empresarial e cívico
diversificado, e das cooperativas, sociedade civil e organizações filantrópicas que fazem parte do que é
chamado de "economia social e solidária" ( SSE). A Força-Tarefa dedicada das Nações Unidas observou que a
realização dos ODS representa um desafio de enorme proporções e que, neste momento, é crucial olhar para a
ESS e ver qual é o seu papel na concretização desta “visão transformacional”. A 7ª conferência internacional
da CIRIEC pode contribuir significativamente para essa reflexão. Realizada pela primeira vez na Europa
Central e Oriental em um país pós-comunista, marcado por grandes mudanças políticas, sociais e econômicas
durante os últimos 70 anos, a Romênia, que recentemente re-descobriu as virtudes da economia social e

With a history of civic associations turned political, and an ongoing sociopolitical transformation in Egypt,
social entrepreneurship (SE) has proliferated as an alternative to traditional forms of civic engagement such as
charities on one hand and open activism on the other. Yet, situated between a desire for change, and the
overpowering state and market logics, SE has been both limited and shaped by neoliberal and local-
authoritarian visions. Using Egypt as the case, this study combines in-depth interviews with civil society
practitioners, and field observation at an SE incubator, to examine how SE came to embody a desire for
change using publicly sanctioned logics, all while enacting practices that preserve/revitalize a social
movement in abeyance. By examining SE as part of a larger phenomenon in this particular moment of
transition, this timely research allows us to investigate a link between social movements and SE not as two
separate phenomena but as different ways of approaching the same thing: creating social transformation.

Democratizing the Refugee Regime Complex

This article considers how civil society organizations (CSOs) may be understood in relation to the global
refugee regime complex. It describes how several leading scholars have conceptualized refugee/internally
displaced person (IDP) governance and explores how the neoliberal cognitive frame is impeding the
possibility of democratic agency among IDPs/refugees. It argues that CSOs can play essential roles in
encouraging democratization of the refugee regime complex by working to reshape their prevailing frame or
orientation. Civil society organizations can also work to foster critical reflexivity among the parties that
govern refugees and within that population as well. As an example of one such effort, the article employs

Fraser’s (Scales of justice: reimagining political space in a globalizing world. Columbia University Press, New
York, 2010) democratization framework in a brief case analysis of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Deshodaya
initiative in Sri Lanka that has sought to enable IDPs in that nation to embrace critical reflexivity to reimagine
themselves as governing agents who can redefine state and international organization-based definitions of
refugee protection. Overall, the analysis suggests that civil society organizations can act successfully and
intentionally to open democratic spaces in which refugees/IDPs may find possibilities to exercise their innate
agential possibility.

In order to contribute to the debate about social entrepreneurship, we take an empirical perspective and
describe the phenomenon in Catalonia, Spain, during the financial crises of the early twenty-first century. For
this aim, we conducted 43 in-depth interviews with social entrepreneurs, launched a web-based survey with
90 responses, and built a database with 347 organizations and/or ventures settled in Catalonia with an
explicit social/environmental goal. The data show that many social/environmental initiatives emerged
during the economic crisis, either as a self-employment alternative to unemployment, or as a commercial
venture started by nonprofit organizations as a reaction to the reduction in public expense in this sector. In
addition, the crisis fueled the emergence of ventures oriented to non-market exchange and social currencies.
As a whole, we argue that this new reality can be conceptualized as the emergence of an unsettled Strategic
Action Field where banks, business schools and public administrations alike promote the label of “social
entrepreneurship” through awards and startup services, whereas other groups claiming the same
social/environmental goals contest this market-oriented definition of the field.

Trata-se de artigo contento a síntese dos resultados parciais das pesquisas em andamento no âmbito do
Projeto “Sustentabilidade Econômica das Organizações da Sociedade Civil”. São apresentados dados e

Atualmente, a conexão entre os dilemas globais de sustentabilidade e as ações locais se coloca como um
desafio central. Este estudo explora essa problemática, analisando uma experiência recente de avaliação do
grau de sustentabilidade municipal: o Sistema de Indicadores para o Desenvolvimento Municipal Sustentável
de Santa Catarina (SIDMS). O artigo examina as estratégias adotadas, destacando os avanços e as dificuldades
na criação e implantação do sistema e apresenta uma síntese dos principais resultados, com uma análise
panorâmica do grau de sustentabilidade dos municípios catarinenses. Como principal conclusão, o estudo
mostra a fotografia de um estado composto por ilhas de dinamismo e diversas áreas com desenvolvimento
precário, nas quais há o risco de consolidação do modelo excludente e concentrador observado em
determinadas regiões do Brasil.

En los últimos quince años han irrumpido en el escenario político, económico y científico términos como la
innovación social, la economía colaborativa, la empresa social, la responsabilidad social empresarial, la
ciudadanía corporativa, la economía circular, la economía del bien común, la economía solidaria y las
prácticas económicas alternativas. La irrupción de este nuevo léxico se ha hecho patente durante la última
crisis y en el contexto de transformación estructural de las economías occidentales. Conforman paradigmas
que nacen en el contexto de deslegitimación del modelo económico imperante basado en la empresa
maximizadora de beneficios y poniendo en valor la dimensión social. El objeto del presente artículo es
analizar estas nociones emergentes y compararlas con el ya consolidado concepto de la economía social. Para
ello, en primer lugar y como punto de referencia, se presenta el concepto de economía social, su sentido
socioeconómico y epistemológico y sus dimensiones cuantitativas actuales en Europa. En segundo lugar, se
estudia cada una de estas nociones emergentes abordando su contenido, su grado de institucionalización
académica y social y finalmente el grado de notoriedad alcanzado. En tercer lugar, se realiza una
interpretación de la aparición de estas nociones y se ofrece un marco de análisis para su comparación con el
concepto de economía social. El artículo finaliza con un apartado de conclusiones

Este artigo apresenta brevemente o histórico e a evolução do periódico Cadernos EBAPE.BR, atualmente
classificado como A2 no sistema brasileiro de avaliação de periódicos da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de
Pessoal de Nível Superior (Qualis/Capes). Destaca-se a preocupação da equipe editorial de seguir sua
tradição ao publicar pesquisas bem fundamentadas e realizadas segundo critérios metodológicos rigorosos,
considerando os valores democráticos ao permitir o debate acadêmico entre as várias correntes teóricas e
escolas de pensamento da Administração de Empresas e tratando, especificamente, de temas como inclusão

Este artigo analisa o papel histórico da Revista de Administração de Empresas (RAE) na construção do campo
acadêmico em Administração no Brasil, com base nos artigos, nos editoriais e nas resenhas publicadas a partir
de sua criação, em 1961. A RAE surgiu como o periódico que introduziu os primeiros modelos de gestão a ser
seguidos. Trata-se de uma nova linguagem, não apenas de formas de organizar as vendas ou a produção, de
uma nova mentalidade que propõe uma organização social distinta. São características relevantes da RAE,
desde sua criação, a divulgação de novas áreas do conhecimento em Administração e a publicação das
primeiras pesquisas empíricas sobre a realidade brasileira. Os primeiros números da RAE indicam: i) a
presença de autores estrangeiros, vários vinculados à Michigan State University (MSU), instituição que
participou da fundação e do desenvolvimento da Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo da
Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV EAESP); ii) os primeiros artigos de áreas temáticas da Administração, em
especial, Marketing, Finanças e Comportamento Organizacional; e iii) o contato dos professores brasileiros
com uma literatura internacional atualizada, especialmente norte-americana, no campo da Gestão. Ao lado de
textos que tratam de práticas administrativas, a RAE também é um espaço para debates político-sociais e
artigos reflexivos e críticos.

This study considers John Dewey’s theory of the emotions, a theory whose relevance and validity are now
being rediscovered. The texts in which Dewey focused on the emotions stand at two very different points in
his career. The first two, published in 1894 and 1895, relate to the development of functional psychology,
culminating with his famous 1896 article on the reflex arc. These texts assess and criticise the contributions of
Charles Darwin and William James to the theory of the emotions. They explain how emotions are modes of
behaviour, in which what is at stake is the coordination of activities; the object and the subject of the emotion
emerge from a single experience of adjustment to the environment. It was only with the publication in 1934 of
Art as Experience that Dewey would complete his undertaking, by returning to the question of the expression
of emotions and crediting emotion with a real function in experience. This role is conceived in terms of
discovery and clarification, of selection and unification, and of the pre-reflexive handling of a situation.

Mary P. Follett occupies an original place in the landscape of pragmatism. After studying at Harvard, for
almost twenty years she was a figure in the civic life of Boston and a national leader of the National
Community Centre Association. She then published two books, The New State (1918) and Creative
Experience (1924), in which she developed an original theory of the processes of self-creation, self-
organisation and self-development of individual and collective experience, in counterpoint to a conception of
democracy. This article examines how her view of experience is anchored in a group psychology that borrows
from the pragmatism of William James and Edwin B. Holt and from Gestalt theory. From it, Follett derives an
original conception of social ethics, compared here with those of Jane Addams, Ella L. Cabot or Charles H.
Cooley. Beyond this, she develops a radical conception of political action, founded on the cooperation and the
communication of “power-with”, as against the coercion of “power-over”. Follett advocates a strong version
of participatory democracy. This entails a critique of expertise and representation, a project for urban citizens
and industrial workers self-government, and the reconstruction of a federal state.

No artigo discutimos uma proposta metodológica para estudos baseados na prática (EBP), visando ampliar as
possibilidades teóricas e empíricas no campo dos estudos organizacionais. A partir do conceito de prática de
Schatzki, discutimos sua base fenomenológica, bem como a possibilidade de integrar as diversas dimensões
da prática expressas na diversidade de abordagens, identificadas na revisão de seis edições especiais de
periódicos europeus sobre o tema. Nossa proposição é a adoção de uma imersão baseada na fenomenologia
como método e na etnografia como estratégia de pesquisa, que permita a ampliação do envolvimento do
pesquisador na prática estudada. Nós propomos, ainda, a adoção de técnicas de pesquisa que ampliem a
capacidade de descrição, representação e compreensão dessa prática, especialmente em estudos de fenômenos
sociais como poder, agência, aprendizagem organizacional entre outros

The articulation between the social and solidarity-based economy (SSE) and
territory is not self-evident. For the contributions to this volume, the challenge
was one of disentangling these interrelations by avoiding two pitfalls. The first,
the idealist perspective, sees SSE as the magic answer to all neoliberalism-
related ills. The demystifing perspective, by contrast, emphasizes the relentless
routinization and isomorphism of SSE enterprises, which eventually end up
resorting to market-oriented and/or public economy oriented models. Local
case studies can extricate from this dilemma. Close observation of complex
local configurations where public, private, associative and cooperative actors
and issues are deeply entangled, enables to achieve a nuanced understanding
of the territorial dynamics of the SSE. This book is the result of the
International Ciriec working group on SSE and territory. It emanates from an
interdisciplinary dialogue conducted among researchers from nine countries
and two continents, Europe and America. If contexts vary from one country to
another, the contributions underline the capacity of SSE to elaborate original
inputs to social, economic and sustainable local development. Based on
original case studies, the contributions illustrate different strategies of SSE
organisations in their respective territories. SSE provides an innovative answer
to changes in socio-economic and political regulations, by promoting new
forms of territorial cooperation. Despite the differences between the case
studies, all the chapters of this book contribute towards a balanced approach to
the territorial regimes of the SSE which interweaves socio-economic
approaches to local and community development, analysis of SSE governance,
social mobilizations and territorial policymaking.

Practice, Judgment, and the Challenge of Moral and Political Disagreement: A

Pragmatist Account offers an account of moral and political disagreement,
explaining its nature and showing how we should deal with it. In so doing it
strikes a middle path between troublesome dualisms such as those of realism
and relativism, rationality and imagination, power and justification. To do so,
the book draws on the resources of the pragmatist tradition, claiming that this
tradition offers solutions that have for the most part been neglected by the
contemporary debate. To prove this claim, the book provides a large account of
debates within this tradition and engages its best solutions with contemporary
philosophical theories such as perfectionism, critical theory, moral realism, and
liberalism. The question of the nature of disagreement is addressed both at the
general theoretical level and more specifically with reference to moral and
political forms of disagreement. At the more general level, the book proposes a
theory of practical rationality based upon the notion of rationality as inquiry.
At the second, more specific, level, it aims to show that this conception can
solve timely problems that relates to the nature of moral and political
reasoning.

tipo de organización sin ánimo de lucro (OSAL) cuyo campo de trabajo son las
intervenciones sociales. Su radio de acción son las actividades de cooperación
internacional con gobiernos, la ejecución directa de programas y proyectos con
comunidades, o asociadas con agencias pares de los países donde trabajan.
Este libro explora e intenta comprender la forma en la cual las ONGD alinean
los intereses de los donantes y de las comunidades, frente a las tensiones y
contradicciones producidas por la aplicación simultánea de dos estrategias
utilizadas en el management del desarrollo: empoderamiento y
responsabilización. Por su carácter estructural y paradoxal estas
contradicciones no son resueltas, y enfrentan a los empleados y a la
organización a fenómenos de tipo comunicacional que ponen a prueba la
coherencia estructural de la misma.
