Resident Mentor On-Duty, John Rios, received a noise complaint at 9:37 PM on

8/27/15. RM Rios called Back-Up RMOD, Rohan Thakkar for assistance. Upon
arrival at Room 309 at 9:40PM, the door was not immediately answered.
RMOD Thakkar and RMOD Rios heard bottles clinking while waiting for the door
to be opened. After multiple knocks the door was cracked opened by Resident
Shanna Graham who allowed RMOD Rios and RMOD Thakkar into the room after
a short discussion.
Upon entering the room RMOD Thakkar announced the original reason for
coming, the noise complaint, and also addressed the additional issue, alcohol.
Resident Hartfield claimed that the shot glasses around the room and the growler
on the floor were filled with water because Guest Zietara was sick. RMOD Thakkar
said that the scent of alcohol was distinct and asked the residents and their guests
to place all of the alcohol and paraphernal in the middle of the room.
RMOD Thakkar announced his responsibility to document the situation. Resident
Turenne stated “well we did not do anything, like we aren’t drinking and nobody
has a cup in their hand right now”. RMOD Rios stated “we are not deciding who is
at fault right now, we are just going to compile some information right now about
this interaction…the more cooperative you are we can put that in the report”.
RMOD Thakkar then asked Resident Hartfield to open a cooler close by, Resident
Hartfield responded “Do I have to? What if I don’t do it?”. RMOD Thakkar
explained that he would have to call the higher staff or USCPD to handle the
situation. Resident Graham asked Resident Hartfield to open it so that they
wouldn’t get into more trouble.
RMOD Rios asked if there were any other residents present in the suite that were
not currently visible, Resident Lewandowski was in her room and came out when
called for. At 9:45 PM all residents and their guests were in the living
room/kitchen area. RMOD Thakkar asked for the Carolina Cards of all residents.
Resident Lewandowski became defensive and asked if she must give up her card
even if she was just studying in her room. Resident Graham said she understood
what the RMODs were saying but that she “was not trying to get into trouble, I’m
just trying to go to med school. I don’t need this to be on my record. Do I really
have to give up my card?” RMOD Thakkar restated that they are just collecting
information and that the Judicial System will decide who was at fault based on the
facts.
RMOD Rios asked a final time if there was any more alcohol present in the room.
One guest did not have her Carolina Card and RMOD Thakkar said they could call
USCPD up to identify her, then asked again if she had any form of identification
with her to avoid involving the USCPD.
Guest Brown then found her ID. RMOD Thakkar asked for Guest Brown to remove
a bottle from her bag and place it on the table with the rest of the alcohol.
RMOD Thakkar also asked Resident Hartfield to check behind his chair for
additional alcohol. At 9:48PM all alcohol was placed in the center of the room.
RMOD Thakkar asked for a resident to dump all of the alcohol out in the sink in
front of RMOD Rios and RMOD Thakkar.
At 9:50PM Resident Hartfield finished disposing of all of the alcohol. RMOD
Thakkar described the process that would occur next, being contacted by an
administrator to explain the residents’ side of the story to determine the outcome
of the incident.
RMOD Rios asked if there were any other questions, there were none. At 9:53PM
all alcohol was discarded. RMOD Rios thanked residents for their cooperation and
the incident concluded at 9:54 PM.
