feel that Halloween is the
best holiday that humankind has yet
discovered, hands down.
Evidence:

But you can hate Halloween, if you’re that kind
of cold, distant person, we guess. In either situation, there

Governor’s portrait should be up before he leaves office

The official portrait of
Gov. Ted Kulongoski is on
track to be unveiled Dec. 2
at the Capitol, about a
month before he leaves
office.
That’s well ahead of the
schedule set by his prede-
cessor, Gov. John
Kitzhaber, whose portrait
finally went up outside the
Oregon Senate Chambers
more than seven years
after he left office.
The nonprofit Oregon
State Capitol Foundation
has raised its goal of
$15,000 to pay the artist
and expenses for the recep-
tion, said Kerry Tymchuk,
chairman of the Kulongos-
ki portrait committee, this
week. He stressed that no

Artist Eduardo Fernan-
dez, a Cuban immigrant
who has lived in Portland
since 1991, was chosen by
Kulongoski and his wife,
Mary Oberst.
“I’m in the process of
painting it right now,” said
Fernandez on Wednesday
from his Portland studio.
“It’s been a pretty involved
process, with photo shoots
and compositional studies
to make and sittings the
governor has done for me.”
Fernandez declined to
describe the painting, oth-
er than to say that its back-
drop is the Capitol.
“I think he wants to have
it unveiled, and it will
speak for itself,” he said.
The painter taught last
summer at the Portland
Art Museum, and he’s now
teaching privately. His
style is naturalist and real-
ist, he said.
Tymchuk likely was
responsible for putting
Kulongoski’s portrait on
the fast track, he said. He
was standing next to the
governor at the Kitzhaber
portrait unveiling in May
and suggested that Kulon-
goski not wait so long.
“I told him I thought a
better time to do one, for a
two-term governor, is
before you leave office,”
Tymchuk said.
