PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
• Warm-up run around the gym three times
• Have students join you in the middle
• Ask for a suggestion of which tag game they would like to play 5 min
• Students will play tag and then join you at the middle again to discuss
the next activity
Body Time
Introduction to 1) Ask students if anybody is familiar with Rugby.
Rugby “What can you tell me about rugby?” Explain to
students that rugby is a little bit like football, but
very different in many ways. One of the most
important rules is that the ball is always passed
5 min
backwards, and can never be passed forward. It is a
full contact sport, with tackling, but we will just play
touch rugby. There are usually 15 players on the
field, but another version called sevens is often
played with only 7 players on the field.
Throwing a 1) Ask students if anyone has thrown a rugby ball
Rugby Ball before, if yes ask them if they would like to join you
to perform a demonstration. If nobody has before,
ask for a volunteer and call them up to
demonstrate. As you pass the rugby ball explain and
show the students how to hold the ball, how to
throw the ball, how to catch the ball.
2) Number students 1-8, all the 1’s go together, all the
2’s etc. These will be the groups for passing 10 min
practice. (6 groups of 3, 2 groups of 4) Each of the
groups will get a rugby ball and stand in a
circle/square. Students will then practice their
passing and catching of the rugby ball. Circulate the
room and help students who may be struggling.

Snake Passing 1) The same groups will then form a line. The person
standing at the front of the line will have the ball.
The group will run around the gym with the leader
7 min
turning and passing the ball to the person behind
them. Once they pass the ball, they will go to the
back of the line and this will continue in a rotation.
Conclusion Time
• Ask the students to stop passing the ball and collect all of the balls.
3 min
• Have the students line up at the door silently to transition back to class.
Assessment
• Visual observations of students and their ability to pass the rugby ball- formative
• Annotative notes of observations of skill and participation- formative
