Electromagnetic Radiation: Energy can be transferred as both a particle and a wave

Rationale: (context and why unit matters)

This unit will be an introduction to electromagnetic radiation, and more specifically we will talk in depth about visible light and how we interact with/use it. Students will
learn about the different uses and effects of electromagnetic radiation as well (cancer treatment, sunburns, x-rays, radios…) that surround them daily. This unit will give
students a look at a different type of physical science, and possibly affect the way that they view our world.
Culminating task or event to celebrate or bring together the learning
Students will be completing a unit test at the end of this unit.

Big Ideas(curriculum) important/essential questions (create)

- What is electromagnetic radiation?
- Can visible light be used to model all electromagnetic radiation?
Energy can be transferred as both a particle and a wave - What is the ray model of light? What is the wave model of light?
UN - What is the particle model of light?
DER - How does light interact with the world around us?
- How does light interact with different materials?
STA - What are the laws of reflection?
ND - How does light interact with different shapes of mirror?
- What is refraction?
- How does light interact with lenses?
- How do human eyes work?
- What technology uses electromagnetic radiation?
Curricular Competencies: (skills)
- Demonstrate a sustained intellectual curiosity about a scientific topic or problem of personal interest
- Make observations aimed at identifying their own questions about the natural world
- Formulate alternative “If…then…” hypotheses based on their questions
- Observe, measure, and record data (qualitative and quantitative), using equipment, including digital technologies, with accuracy and precision
DO - Ensure that safety and ethical guidelines are followed in their investigations
- Experience and interpret the local environment
- Construct and use a range of methods to represent patterns or relationships in data, including tables, graphs, keys, models, and digital technologies as
appropriate
- Use scientific understandings to identify relationships and draw conclusions
- Communicate ideas, findings, and solutions to problems, using scientific language, representations, and digital technologies as appropriate
Content (learning standards):
- types of electromagnetic radiation: the electromagnetic spectrum consists of radio, microwave, infrared, light, UV, X-ray, and gamma rays
- effects of electromagnetic radiation: positive effects include cancer treatments; negative effects include sunburns
KN - properties of light: acts like both a wave and a particle, wavelength, amplitude, frequency
OW - behaviours of light: reflection, refraction, absorption, transmission, scattering, images formed by lenses and mirrors, effects of translucent, transparent, and
opaque objects
- ways of sensing light: human vision, optical instruments, cameras

STAGE 2: Assessment Plan

Formative Assessment (for learning):
- Whiteboard games
- Quizizz
- Think-Pair-Share
- Quizzes
- Circulation
- Lab reports (worksheets)
- Games
Summative Assessment (of learning):
Students will be writing a unit test at the end of this unit
