Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a uniquely broad base profession. Mechanical Engineers apply their
scientific knowledge to solve problems and design machines that help us to enjoy a better life.
Not only working in areas traditionally associated with the discipline, such as power
generation, automotive, aerospace and manufacturing industries, Mechanical Engineers
increasingly find themselves working in interdisciplinary teams solving problems in areas such
as nano-technology, electrical and electronic systems, environmental protection,
bio-engineering, renewable energy and food industry.

Mechanical Engineering has a long and honourable history in the Faculty of Engineering at The
University of Nottingham, UK. The four-year MEng and three-year BEng courses offered in UK
are now available at the Malaysia Campus in Kuala Lumpur. The Programme is identical in
content and quality to that presented in the UK. It will provide a firm foundation in mechanical
engineering and the opportunity to develop appropriate interpersonal and management skills.

There is no distinction made between students applying for BEng and MEng. The first year is
common to both MEng and BEng. Students can opt for the MEng at the end of the first year
and confirmation is made at the end of the second year depending on exam performance.

Programme Objectives

Specific objectives of the MEng degree courses are to develop in the student:

1. an understanding of the principles and techniques of mechanical engineering science

and of the computational and mathematical tools used in the solution of real problems;
2. the ability to apply these principles and methods in the practice of mechanical
engineering;
3. the ability to visualize, design and analyse components and assemblies in three
dimensions;
4. a sound knowledge of material properties and manufacturing methods and their cost
effective use in the design and improvement of engineering components and
equipment;
5. the ability to communicate ideas effectively in written reports, verbally and by means of
presentations to groups;
6. the ability to work as a member of a team and to display initiative and enterprise in the
planning and realization of engineering projects;
7. confidence through practice in the use of experimental methods;
8. the appreciation of the responsibilities of Professional Mechanical Engineers and of the
social, management and financial environment in which they work.
